I love this guide. One of the best for insects, this definitely enhanced my learning experience in my entomology course. And now I find myself keeping this book in my bag everywhere I go. Really handy. With insects, you need to take a taxonomic approach to identify between families, this book lays out the differences for easier id. (In some scenarios a magnifying glass or dissecting scope is the most helpful.)

This was perfect for my 9-yr old in 4th grade. They were studying insects for this year and this gave him more than enough materials to build a realistic insect model. My son loved this book and read it avidly before building his insect model. Great purchase for us!

oops! I got the book for my class to learn to use a dichotomous key for identification. The key in this book begins in the front outpapers and is supposed to continue in the back outpapers. Unfortunately the back outpapers are completely blank, rendering the book less than useable. I don't know if it is a single misprint or a larger problem but I'm returning this one.

My girlfriend is studying to be a forensic entomologist and she had been wanting to purchase this book for awhile, so i ended up buying it for her birthday. She loves it and uses it in her studies. I would suggest the purchase for that bug enthusiast in your life.

Decent price for a book I have been wanting for a while. I have Borr's ID book but it is too big to take to the field. This is a nice hand book that I can take to the field and it has comparable information....not the most complete but very broad for it being a handbook. Overall, I am happy.

Unfortunately, I bought this to share with my grandchildren and there are not very many color plates and it is too much work to be practical for them. They are just starting school.

Bought this one because it's part of the Peterson series. Voluminous technical text, LOL, but that's the nature of the beast. I'd like more color plates (there are 16) but the B&W illustrations are decent and use the "diagnostic" arrows to point out significant features. I recommend it, but it's not as "easy" as Peterson's Eastern birds book. :-)

Great book, as most of the Peterson Field Guides are. Lots of information, from how insects are classified to descriptions of certain bugs. Very good book, super useful to learn from.
