This poignant memoir is a must-have for teen collections.'' (School Library Journal (starred review))''As America's doors threaten to shut against refugees, this memoir could not be timelier. Her ability to summon the chaos and terror is extraordinary, but then, so is she. [Uwiringiyimana] has emerged as a powerful spokesperson for the plight of the dispossessed.'' (Booklist)''With compassion and perspicacity, Uwiringiyimana shares the journey through which she became a courageous advocate for her tribe and refugees everywhere: 'This is my story.... I must keep telling it, until the international community proves.... that my family and all others are not disposable.' '' (Publishers Weekly)''[A] story of tragedy, terror, survival, and hope. [Uwiringiyimana] becomes a powerful voice for many who are silenced: girls, women, and immigrants everywhere, refugees in particular. This book is hands down the most incredible, heart-wrenching yet so funny and genuine. I couldn't stop reading so I finished in a couple of hours. This is not a memoir of a war child but rather of a resilient young woman Sandra Uwiringiyimana. She was able to put into words what millions around the world have felt and experienced. I went from laughing out hard at the childhood stories to crying and then hardly breathing. Be prepared to laugh a lot and cry even harder. In the end, this book is about love in some ways. It's a journey filled with trials and triumphs, war and peace teaching us all that no matter what happens light will always drown darkness the way love trumps hate. Here's an excerpt (page 87) my favourite:" If only I had known that I would never see her again, I would have spent the years learning every curve on her face, studying those long eyelashes, memorizing the way her lips curled into a funny little twist when she was happy."

This is a riveting story that spoke to me in unexpected ways. This is not just about a girl surviving a terrible ordeal, it is about a young woman thriving without compromising. This book is a must-read for anyone trying to understand the refugee experience, from the horrors she faced as a young child to the challenges she survived in navigating life in a camp and eventually in America. Uwiringiyimana articulates the racial divide in the U.S. with the clear-sighted vision of someone who has seen the best and the worst of humanity.

Young human rights activist, Sandra Uwiringiyimana shares her powerful heartbreaking memoir, How Dare the Sun Rise, of the sudden collapse of family life for her parents, Sandra and her six siblings. The family, Rwandans, considered a hated Banyamulenge minority, lived in the mountains of South Kivu, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Because of the wars and rumored wars, the family were stateless, and moved from place to place. They had settled in Uvira Province, a city in South Kivu, where the close-knit, loving family lived a peaceful life until, again, unrest started. In 2004, the family were placed in a refugee camp in Gatumba, Burundi. There is where 10-year-old Sandra witnessed the rebel massacre of families, including her six-year-old sister, Deborah, cousins, and the shooting of her mother, brother, and aunt.In 2006, Sandra’s father heard of a resettlement program initiated to help displaced persons. After numerous interviews, the entire family were approved and immigrated to Rochester, New York, in 2007.The memoir explores Sandra’s mental and emotional struggle, her coming of age in a new society, defining herself counter to the cultural expectations of family and, navigating through the angst of her teens, and living in America. Some might question Sandra’s behavior in some instances, but I believe she suffered Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and guilt over Deborah’s death. The family established a new life in America, but received no family therapy. Sandra did receive brief therapy while attending college. However, Sandra mentioned that culturally, the family does not speak of their loss or unhappiness; instead, they have a strong belief in the power of prayer.

How Dare the Sun Rise is a heartwrenching story of how Sandra Uwiringiyimana managed to survive the massacre that took the life of her sister and countless other friends and family only to tackle obstacles once she arrived in America. It would have been all too easy for Miss Uwiringiyimana to just give up on life but instead she perseverance has helped carry her to a greatness. Her story is inspirational and should serve as an example to young people that yes, things may be difficult but through dedication, hard work and belief in yourself, anything is possible.

I loved this book. Sandra's writing is genuine and tells her story in a way that is easy to identify with. When I interact with a refugee or anyone who has been through a severe trauma or massacre, it's easy for me to think that if they seem ok, they ARE ok. How Dare The Sun Rise helped me understand how complex, deep, and even delayed the struggles can be for someone in Sandra's position. Her story also clearly revealed the things people said and did that eased her transition, or made it miserable. As someone who wants to welcome people in similar situations, I can see with more clarity how I might do that practically.

Sandra tells her story of surviving the Gatumba massacre as a child, and living to tell the tale. She walks us through every experience she faced from the injustice she faced before the massacre, her family escaping trouble, the horror of the massacre and her journey that followed. Though she faced extreme poverty and didn’t know if she could have a better future, the doors opened and she was resettled in the USA. The book is enlightening and shares the tales of another heinous crime against humanity that doesn’t get press. It’s a hard tale, but a moving one of hope, activism, and learning how to live again when you’ve been given a second chance. A beautiful memoir, an easy read. I would recommend this story to all.

This is the most powerful and honest book I've ever read. Sandra is an amazing woman whose experience can teach us all how to live with compassion and resilience in circumstances many people could not imagine being faced with. She is hope and light in the world and I hope everyone reads this book!

I initially chose this book because I wanted to better understand the thoughts and actions of a Congolese friend. This is a kind and loving person who sometimes, to me seemed detached.Thank you for this book. I know feel what he meant when he said, "I've cried enough." As an author you continue the call for justice for Deborah and the other 165 humans murdered in The Gatumba Massacre, and the many lives impacted by the hate that caused and continues to cause this and other atrocities. You also gave readers a precious window into the lives of people raised in war.

This book, in conjunction with the free MIT video course, is among the best educational values available. It is written (and presented in video) in a clear, concise, efficient style, with commentary that provides the motivating ideas for each major step. Examples illustrate many of these ideas along the way. The subject as presented in the book is clearly the result of many years of teaching the course to able students. Not much wasted motion here - Oppenheim's got the presentation down to a science - so every paragraph counts. The focus is on the development and application of certain concepts as powerful tools for dealing with the title subject. Once these tools are in place, the entire subject is transformed in a way which makes many results almost transparent. There are not many other subjects that lend themselves to such a clarifying process. This is not a math book, but the tools are mathematical. Whether you find this book a joy or a struggle depends on your background. If you are moderately comfortable with complex numbers and complex exponentials; if you have at least seen Fourier and Laplace transforms before; if you know what an eigenfunction is - then you will be rewarded in proportion to your effort.Problem sets are used to expand on some ideas and introduce others, as well as to help you gauge your understanding. The problems are varied and some are harder than others. You might get stuck in spots, but in the end you really should be able to do most of them. If you have great difficulty with many of them, then you might need to brush up on the math a bit before continuing. Have fun!

"very good. I will be keeping this for a long time as a reference."

Holds throughout time. Dr. Oppenheim is straight forward and easy to follow.

To be used, this book is perfect.

Great fast shipping. good condition and pleased with the book. I needed it for review of the material. Thanks :)

This book was a great reference for the book Signals, Systems, and Transforms by Leland B. Jackson.

I have used this book when I was in college and found it hard to understand, at first. Later on I started using it as a reference and begun to appreciate it. The trick was to read it very patiently (extremely), line by line. No short cuts. If one wants to highlight the most important part of any section of this book, that person will end up highlighting the entire book. It is that dense in information. I have consulted this book several times as a reference since then. I have seen some other work of Oppenheim's and I believe he is one of the most talented person in this field and knows exactly how to present this subject in the most graceful way.As far as the end of chapter questions are concerned, I should agree to the fact that they are very hard. One needs to be extremely knowledgeable to attack some of the problems. If you are novice to Signal Processing, chances are you will not even understand the solution let alone the question.Bottom line: I believe this book can be used by any body who has some basic understanding of mathematics. You do not have to be an expert at all.

The condition of the book was okay but the seller forgot to mention what the edition of the book is! However, the shipping time was good.
