I used Admiralty in a Nutshell to prepare for my Admiralty class and exam in law school. I would not recommend using this book in place of a course in Admiralty or a case book, but this is thorough and explains concepts well. The table of contents at the beginning of the book is detailed, so you don’t have to go hunting through the text searching for information on a specific topic. The chapter layouts make sense, and the topics build on each other in an easy to understand way.This book is one of the only Admiralty hornbooks on the market, and luckily for for me it also turned out to be helpful.

I want to preface my review with this: if you are taking an admiralty law class, buy this book!I don't normally make such sweeping recommendations, but this book was amazing and invaluable in helping me understand admiralty concepts and supplementing my readings.The nutshell goes into good detail on key-concepts of the subject such as: Admiralty jurisdiction, what is a vessel, navigable waters, maritime torts and contracts, salvage, and 2 important admiralty categories: longshoremen and seamen.The book however is not perfect and it does not cover the 3rd category: Passengers.Overall though, this was probably one of the best nutshells or supplements I've ever used for a class.

I work in International Trade Law, and wanted to expand my understanding of Maritime & Admiralty Law, so I could improve my practice skills to meet the needs of potential clients. After considering several Hornbooks on the topic, and rather than taking CLE courses right off the bat, I decided to prime my understanding with a walk around the basics of Maritime & Admiralty Law. This book presents a clearly written, no bones approach that allows you to absorb the major points of this area of law, without cluttering the presentation with Socratic inquiries or tangential topics. The manner in which it is presented includes a discussion of a topic area, and some discussion of major case law, as well as information about how this area of law may or may not coincide with the common law in non-maritime/non-admiralty cases. It also pays close attention to areas where state law and admiralty/maritime law intersect. This is vital for two reasons: first, it gives you the kind of practical advice that helps you best serve your clients, and second, it gives you a hint about scenarios in which it might be better to associate with counsel with greater expertise in a particular area of law.I find the text easy to read and understand. It is well organized, and it was clearly well-planned. I highly recommend this guide to a neophyte practitioner with an interest in maritime or admiralty, or to a student who wants to find out more about this area of law.

I highly recommend this for anyone who is starting off in the maritime field. It gives a great overview of the field in a very succinct fashion. It also serves as a good refresher when you're practicing if you need to find a quick reference or review a topic.

This particular nut-shell was recommended to me by a leading admiralty trial attorney during an interview. Since I graduated from a law school that did not offer courses in maritime law, I neeeded something to give me a foundation in that area, so I could compete with interviewees that had graduated from law schools that offered maritime law classes. Well, the book did just that; it contains alot of substance and covers maritime law issues in the perspective and tone of a practioner. Although it's a small book, it offers a needed foundation to a vast and complex and interesting field for the out-sider.

I hated this book. Plain black and white text not very interactive at all. The information is jumbled, would not recommend.

I ordered this book to help study for Admiralty Law. I wish I would have ordered it in the beginning of the semester. It covered many of the topics that we went over in class and it explains the various concepts well. Since I ordered it right before finals I didn't have time to thoroughly read it. I read only the chapters that covered stuff I was least familiar with and I found it helpful. I definitely recommend this book.

While working on my thesis, I used this book to research laws of maritime courts. This book was a life saver...

Yesterday, I went to have the oil changed on our truck. Something I have done numerous times in the past. I knew how long I would have to wait...or thought I did. Over two hours later, my truck was still not done. Now I had a choice to make...get angry or practice doing life as Jesus would if He needed to change the oil in His truck. The first chapter of The Good and Beautiful God: Falling in Love came back to me, the scene of sitting in the airport with one delay after another.This book has gotten under my skin. It is an insight into Father God, the Good and the Beautiful God and why and how I would love Him.I recommend this book, just as my pastor/mentor recommended it to me.

Most of us struggle with unconscious narratives about God: do we really trust him, is he truly good and loving etc...smith delves into these important questions because as A.W. Tozier says, " the most important thing about a person is what they think about God. Their spiritual future can be determined by this." I found this to be true in my life. I have trouble trusting God because of my own father's alcoholism. Most of us struggle believing that God is good, loves us and we can trust him. This book will help you overcome that and truly fall in love with the God that Jesus loved, his "Abba Father." Most of us have false images of God that were given to us by parents, pastors, priests, or other teachers who have harmed us or taught us wrongly. Jesus wants us to love God the Father with all our heart, soul mind and strength because it is the only way to peace, joy, hope and life. The brilliance of this book is learning to see God through Jesus' eyes ( his narratives) in the Gospels.This book changed my life. I have a new love and appreciation for the Gospel that I never had before. Everyone in our small group was transformed and we also highly recommend the other books in the series.

This is such a wonderful book on challenging narratives we have about faith, grace and Christ. Used this book for a university student Bible Study, and the students LOVED it. Can't recommend this enough. The exercises are liberating, not cumbersome, and I think it helps long-term Christians think outside of the box of the trappings of "religion" and embrace relationship.

I really enjoyed studying this book with my community group. It gives practical things to do (sleeping in, silence, enjoying nature, lecto divina, creating magin) and then space to talk about how that worked (or didn't work) with our group. I also was able to lead a few times, and appreciated that it gives step-by-step suggestions for how to lead each chapter so that I didn't have to spend a lot of extra time planning that out. We got both of his other books in this series to try as well.

After teaching spiritual formation for twenty-five years in both university and parish settings, Smith wrote the Apprentice Series to share that material with a wider audience by creating a "curriculum for Christlikeness" (p.14). The curriculum was developed as a result of those formal teaching experiences, personal spiritual training, and interactions with Richard Foster, Henri Nouwen, Rich Mullins, Brennan Manning and Dallas Willard.The Good and Beautiful God seeks to "help people discover the God that Jesus revealed" by exploring many false but commonly held perceptions and comparing them to the "narrative of Jesus" (p.14). The book is written to be read over an extended period of time and ideally studied in a small group. To facilitate group discussion the book includes a Small Group Discussion Guide as an appendix (written by Matthew Johnson and Christopher Jason Fox) and an online Leader Guide (written by Matthew Johnson).The Good and Beautiful God is an orthodox and pragmatic introduction to a God who is good, trustworthy, generous, love, holy, self-sacrificing, and who transforms. For Christians who have been on the journey of faith for any length of time very little of the material in any chapter will be new, but all of the material has the ability to become more meaningful and transformational if the reader engages in "soul training" exercises that are found at the close of each chapter.

This is a must read for any Christian wanting to progress. It paints a picture of the God we need to know and points towards growing our relationship with Him. Christianity is all about relationship, not religion.

This book is a great way to show you the real perception of God through Jesus's eyes rather than the world perception of God that most of us have. This book is great for anyone at any point in their relationship with God. I will definitely be reading it again!

I hope Death is taking good care of Sir Terry Pratchett, because when he comes to take me to the other side, I’d like to kiss Sir Terry on the mouth. Because I’m in love.I don’t think words like clever, witty, cynical, hilarious, dark, gut-busting-funny really do justice to his writing, but it’s kind of all of those combined and you get this amazing writing that is both funny, clever, and underneath it all incredibly dark and somewhat sobering. But how else do you point out to people all that is wrong with humanity? No one wants to hear what’s wrong with humanity unless they want to become a deeply depressed, chain smoking, alcoholics. So you do it the only way that will get people to listen: you disguise it as a joke. So that people can laugh, sigh, and say “that clever bastard” and go on with their day without thinking of drowning themselves in a bottle of gin.I’ve been holding off on starting Terry Pratchett’s works for years because the collection is so massive and apparently you don’t start with book 1. After hearing about his passing, however, I knew I just had to do it. Since there are several viable starting points,after some consideration and research, I decided to start with The City Watch collection, as it is lauded as one of the funniest and best books in the collection.The book is about the city of Ankh Morpork and it’s Watch. “The city wasa, wasa, wasa wossname. Thing. Woman. That’s what it was. Woman. Roaring, ancient, centuries old. Strung you along, let you fall in thingy, love, then kicked you inna, inna, thingy. Thingy, in your mouth. Tongue. Tonsils. Teeth. That’s what it, she, did. She wasa … thing, you know, lady dog. Puppy. Hen. Bitch. And then you hated her and, and just when you thought you’d got her, it, out of your whatever, then she opened her great booming rotten heart to you, caught you off bal, bal, bal, thing. Ance. Yeah. Thassit. Never knew where where you stood. Lay. Only one thing you were sure of, you couldn’t let her go. Because, because she was yours, all you had, even in her gutters…”If you take a city and turn it upside down, put criminals in charge, and the “respectable” folk at the bottom you’ll have something vaguely resembling Ankh Morpork. Cover it in trash, alcohol, and feces and you’ll be much closer.Like any true fantasy this book has it’s heroes, it’s tyrants, it’s would-be-kings trying to beat the tyrants, secret societies, magical books and artifacts, and of course, last, but never the least: dragons.We go to the gutter to find our anti-hero Sam Vimes, Captain of the Night Watch, a depressed alcoholic brought low by a woman. The woman in this case is Ankh Morpork herself, his true love, his city. Our other hero is Carrot, a six foot Dwarf who may not be a Dwarf afterall do to human genetics, in possession of the most non-magical sword in existence. And of course, Srg. Colon and Srg. Nobbs. Oh, and the Librarian mon— beg pardon, Ape. Who may have been a man once. They are all brilliant, lovable, and while slightly cowardly, ready to stand behind their Captain.Then there is of course Lord Havelock Vetinari, who is the city’s ruler, a tyrant who you probably actually don’t mind having in charge, since he’s not very tyrannical, but a very effective ruler. He demands greats respect and you have to give it him, because if you didn’t he’d send men to come and take it away.It takes a threat to the city, to the livelihood of all it’s criminal citizens, to get the good Captain out of his drunken malaise and turn him into the cynical, brooding, anti-hero his city needs, but never knew it wanted. That threat, of course, is a dragon, for what other creature could disturb a city that is already run by organized crime.But a dragon is only a dragon after all, and it will do what a dragon will do. That is, hord anything shinny, set things on fire, and demand a human snack to appease it’s hunger.Full of puns, wordplay, and humours cynicism this book would give Monty Python a run for it’s money, all while showing just how petty some powerful people can be, and how heroic some pathetic people may turn out to be. It a one in a million chance, but it just might work.The question is: Are you feeling lucky, punk?

Of all Terry Pratchett's fantasy-satire Discworld novels, I think "Guards! Guards!" is the best. I always recommend it to first-time Pratchett readers, and they're never disappointed. The book introduces the reader to the great, dirty city of Ankh-Morpork and its many denizens who have come under the threat of a tyrannical fire-breathing dragon. How did it get there? What does it want? Who's going to fight it? The answer is never what you'd suspect! Everything - the humor, the pacing, the characters, the story and its biting satire - all come together brilliantly. The only other titles that come close to this one are probably Reaper Man, Going Postal, The Truth, Wee Free Men, Hogfather, and Thud. I think Sir Pratchett really hit the nail on the head with this one. It is so entertaining and so thoughtful... if you want to get into Pratchett, start here, and if you're already a Pratchett fan, don't miss this one!

I was looking forward to giving this one a "very unpredictable" quick-rating, but for once, Amazon didn't ask. Guards is definitely a broader, meatier novel than its predecessors in the series as I've been reading through, and probably does top my prior favorite, Equal Rites, for character development. As might be expected of any author with an extensive canon, Pratchett is definitely well into his stride pulling in references from prior books, but the core of the story does not rely upon prior knowledge. Neither is it as extensively action/adventure as might be expected from a fantasy novel with a dragon on the cover and a call of alarm in the title. What I'm trying to get at is that you may think you know where it's going, and on a macro scale you're probably right, but some of the kittens are magic, one of them is an orangutan, one may or may not exist, and besides, the laws of physics don't behave the way you'd expect. Which is all to say that the reason you're reading to begin with isn't because you know exactly what's going to happen, but is rather, in fact, because you don't, but you would anyway even if you actually did.

Reliable entertainment, but there are no witches and no wee free men.

About the Author

John Steinbeck, born in Salinas, California, in 1902, grew up in a fertile agricultural valley, about twenty-five miles from the Pacific Coast. Both the valley and the coast would serve as settings for some of his best fiction. In 1919 he went to Stanford University, where he intermittently enrolled in literature and writing courses until he left in 1925 without taking a degree. During the next five years he supported himself as a laborer and journalist in New York City, all the time working on his first novel, Cup of Gold (1929).After marriage and a move to Pacific Grove, he published two California books, The Pastures of Heaven (1932) and To a God Unknown (1933), and worked on short stories later collected in The Long Valley (1938). Popular success and financial security came only with Tortilla Flat (1935), stories about Monterey’s paisanos. A ceaseless experimenter throughout his career, Steinbeck changed courses regularly. Three powerful novels of the late 1930s focused on the California laboring class: In Dubious Battle (1936), Of Mice and Men (1937), and the book considered by many his finest, The Grapes of Wrath (1939). The Grapes of Wrath won both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize in 1939.Early in the 1940s, Steinbeck became a filmmaker with The Forgotten Village (1941) and a serious student of marine biology with Sea of Cortez (1941). He devoted his services to the war, writing Bombs Away (1942) and the controversial play-novelette The Moon is Down (1942). Cannery Row (1945), The Wayward Bus (1948), another experimental drama, Burning Bright (1950), and The Log from the Sea of Cortez (1951) preceded publication of the monumental East of Eden (1952), an ambitious saga of the Salinas Valley and his own family’s history.The last decades of his life were spent in New York City and Sag Harbor with his third wife, with whom he traveled widely. Later books include Sweet Thursday (1954), The Short Reign of Pippin IV: A Fabrication (1957), Once There Was a War (1958), The Winter of Our Discontent (1961), Travels with Charley in Search of America (1962), America and Americans (1966), and the posthumously published Journal of a Novel: The East of Eden Letters (1969), Viva Zapata! (1975), The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights (1976), and Working Days: The Journals of The Grapes of Wrath (1989).Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962, and, in 1964, he was presented with the United States Medal of Freedom by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Steinbeck died in New York in 1968. Today, more than thirty years after his death, he remains one of America's greatest writers and cultural figures.

The year is 1960 and highly acclaimed American novelist John Steinbeck has decided to make a three month driving tour of the United States. His means of travel is a three-quarter ton pickup truck with a well provisioned and appointed camper mounted in the bed. His sole traveling companion is his poodle Charlie.Steinbeck begins his journey in Sag Harbor, New York shortly after Labor Day with a short loop through New England before plowing through the upper Midwest. Along the way, it is his hope to "rediscover" America after having written about it for so many years. He is touched by the almost innate wanderlust within himself and many of the people he encounters.Much of the book reads as a travelogue, and to be honest these were the most entertaining and enlightening. When Steinbeck begins to philosophize, as he does extensively throughout his travels through Texas and then the Deep South (this is 1960, remember), he loses my interest. The book is interesting and entertaining, though at times pedantic and irritating.Most irritating to me was the obviously fictional encounters that Steinbeck creates in an around New Orleans in which he confronts four obvious stereotypes of the region and time frame: The wise, old white gentleman who acknowledges the sins of his race; the elderly black gentleman who is utterly subservient and beaten down; the fire breathing middle aged white racist and the idealistic young black freedom rider.Overall, not a bad read.

What I didn't know about John Steinbeck is that he is always engaging. For twenty years he was the big man writing the Great American Novel: "Tortilla Flat"; "Of Mice and Men"; "The Grapes of Wrath". Then in 1960 he decided he needed to refill his creative tank. He needed to travel across America again (from Maine to California and back home to New York), not as a tourist, not to see the sights--but to engage with people, Americans--see what they were thinking, hear what they were talking about. Steinbeck was the kind of man who could walk into any bar or hardware store or gas station and engage with and maybe even make a friend for a moment or a lifetime of the person he encountered. To be sure, whisky often seemed a catalyst to his socializing. Certainly he was a charming man. To make it even more charming he traveled with this poodle, Charley. Steinbeck didn't give out his name, didn't want to be treated as the big writer. Thus he gathered a very honest, undistorted view of 1960 America. I also didn't know Steinbeck didn't live very long. He died in 1968 at the age of 66.

Being well aware of the recent challenges of the historical authenticity of the writings of the book, I plunged into this travelogue with the same fascination of reading Mr. Steinbeck’s other books. It presents itself as an intriguing look of America in the early 1960’s. Mr. Steinbeck reflects upon how we as Americans were beginning to change in this country, for example our speech patterns melding after “20 years of television and 40 years of radio,” only after 20 and 40 years of these inventions? He searched out the common people among the roadside diners and campsites and gave us a glimpse of the common American of this time period. You’ll be surprise how much has and has not changed over the past 65 years. A good read. I would love to make the same journey he did.

For a travel story written 60 years ago, it is remarkably like road trips in the US today. The story is compelling with a great partner: Charley, the delightful French poodle. Descriptions are inspiring, characters along the way are appealing. It is such a real journey, so fascinating to travel along. The last chapter is so disheartening, it clearly shows this country has made no progress in the dream of democracy.

Mr. Steinbeck's intention of his travel with Charley, his old poodle, in Rocinante, a noble camping truck named after Don Quixote's horse, was two folds: first, his innate wanderlust had grown bigger as his ages advanced. He defied the senility of mind and body as a man who could still be a manly husband to his wife and function as an able-bodied man in society; second, Mr. Steinbeck wanted to see America as he had known on a personal level and to ascertain what could define true American identity and character. What he experienced in his own eyes across the land was part rhapsody of begone days he used to remember and part treatise on American national characteristics. Mr. Steinbeck was indeed a Don Quixote in his pursuit of finding America as portrayed in his novels and as remembered in his memory. But most of all, Mr. Steinbeck was a quintessential American writer in his tough-guy demeanor smeared in the narrative who had a deep affection for his country despite its foibles and imperfections.
