From the Inside Flap

In his signature style of grand storytelling, James Michener sweeps us back through time to the Holy Land, thousands of years ago. By exploring the lives and discoveries of modern archaeologists excavating the site of Tell Makor, Michener vividly re-creates life in and around an ancient city during critical periods of its existence, and traces the profound history of the Jews, including that of the early Hebrews and their persecution, the impact of Christianity on the Jewish world, the Crusades, and the Spanish Inquisition. Michener weaves his epic tale of love, strength, and faith until at last he arrives at the founding of Israel and the modern conflict in the Middle East. The Source is not only a compelling history of the Holy Land and its people but a richly written saga that encompasses the development of Western civilization and the great religious and cultural ideas that have shaped our world.

I had expected "Caravans" to read like the only other Michener book I've read, "Hawaii": a sweeping, multi-generational narrative holding together an entertaining history of the kingdom(s) turned state.Instead, I lived a year of a young American man's life as he comes of age in post-WWII Afghanistan.I can't remember the last time I wanted climb inside a novel. The prose is fluid and clean and perfect. The exotic scenes are richly described, the characters layered and living."Caravans" is wise and philosophical, but crisp as the night desert air he makes you breath, and as seemingly simple as the "primitive" culture main characters witness. An epic journey.

Michener creates a compelling story of a search across Afganistan, of a desert journey by jeep and then journey by foot/horse/camel that allows him to portray some of the grandeur and history of Afganistan and its people post World War II. The relevance of this country has only increased in current times, which contributed to my fascination with his portrayal of life in the late 1940s. Michener's story addresses universal questions about the nature of evil and forgiveness through invoking the particulars of a German doctor/war criminal who has taken refuge in Afganistan who unknowingly tells his story to a Jew, Mark MIller, the protagonist. Mark's desire to take vengeance but his ultimate ability to have compassion give rise to questions about the meaning of forgiveness. This theme gets repeated in interactions between the 'missing' American' young woman, whose rejection of gender and societal expectations in post-War America lead her to a series of unconventional choices and relationships, and her husband, and the other men who love/desire her. Ultimately, her utter self absorption mars the reader's ability to empathize with her, but we are reassured that she will embrace whatever adventures come her way and land on her feet. Michener weaves a compelling tale and his fascination and love for the land come through vividly. A worthwhile read that is still relevant and carries universal themes-- a 'coming of age' novel set in a country with a dramatic history and people.

FINAL REVIEW ...OK - I finished - - and I’m GLAD I did. The reading remained somewhat tedious through the 85% mark but (as one might expect from an author of Michener’s stature) his intent gradually became crystal clear and, I guess, some of the tediosity was necessary. He was building an analog (in words) of the archaeological site for which he describes a discovered history. The analog IS a word picture for the Jewish peoples - of the area of the Middle East and Europe - with references to the American diaspora.Ultimately, this word picture weaves together to provide the reader with a very clear “explanation” for Israel’s collective mentality (if it is at all fair to assume that there IS such a thing any longer) and approach to the rest of the Middle East - - and, indeed, the world.Israel came into existence during my childhood - - but the struggle necessary to achieve said existence escaped my pre-teen attention. Michener BROUGHT it to my attention (even if only through only a small example) and made it crystal clear why Israel - as a nation - may seem “overly-defensive” today. (Had I been part of the struggle to establish and build the country - - - I would have been - and would likely remain - JUST as defensive!)Israel is ENTITLED to its “defensiveness” - as are Jewish peoples in the rest of the world. “NEVER AGAIN!” must remain a vivid and active watchword - - for them - - and for ALL of us!ORIGINAL REVIEW...I'm about 60% of the way through this tome and I am finding it to be - in a word - TEDIOUS. I will finish - - but I can hardly wait until I get to the end of this brick.Michener starts in "present day", flits back to many centuries BCE and then slogs his way through history (with occasional side trips back to present day). Through much of the first half of the book, it seems to be a novelized history of the Jewish peoples, their trials, tribulations and laws. Not being a fan of ANY "organized religion", I find this presentation barely retains my attention.

This was the perfect book to read before I left for Israel, when I was in Israel, and after my trip to Israel. It is 1200 pages and it did take several weeks to go through it. I found it to be very entertaining and informative. I could actually visualize the places that Michener drew us to with his historical stories. I learned so much and a great time reading the chapters as I traveled through these areas. It was a an added bonus to learn about various religions and understand how they are so interwoven.

The book traces the rise of religion in general but primarily Judaism. It is told, in typical Michener style, as a series of shorter interconnected stories. I particularly appreciated the educational aspects of the novel as I learned a lot about foreign religions and cultures that I probably wouldn’t have learned on my own. Great book for a reader familiar with Michener’s style and interested in religion and its roots.

Of COURSE I love the SOURCE--I've just finished reading it for the FIFTH time since first becoming aware of it in the late 1970s. (It's my favorite of the Michener novels, with Centennial, Alaska, and Hawaii coming in second, third, and fourth.) Michener's historical-novel style storytelling really shines in THE SOURCE. Every time I read it, I gain new insights about the history of religion and civilization in Israel, and I also gain greater respect for the Jewish faith and the important role it has played and will continue to play through time in humankind's journey of faith. On a more selfish note, we fans of Michener know that if we want to read his paperback or hardcover books, we have to like "weight lifting," as most of his books are at least 900 pages. In anticipation of this latest rereading, though, I finally ordered "The Source" as a Kindle book. Who would have thought reading Michener's novels could be considered "light" reading?!

I just now finished reading this, and I really really enjoyed it. I wish I'd had it on hand when I was teaching a game design class a few years ago. I heard about it on "The Big Idea" section of Scalzi's blog (http://whatever.scalzi.com/2015/03/17/the-big-idea-brian-upton/). Neuroscience? Microsemiotics? Applications to literary criticism? I sent off for a copy.I'll leave a review of the technical content to others, and will instead comment on the results of my experience of reading. (Read the book, and you may see why that could be a natural move to make right after reading the book!)* I want to talk about it with my friends. And then talk about it with some people I've never met, for contrast.* I want to go back and replay some games from a couple decades ago and introspect on how I'm engaging with them.* I want to go to a modern art museum and try out some new approaches to looking at what I've traditionally categorized as "trash my 3 year old could make".* I want to run a series of experiments that involve exposing different groups of people to new games.* I want to read up on deconstructionism a bit more, because while I don't think I'm going to start liking it, I think I can see an interesting option for disliking it less.* I want to design a game that synergistically exploits both narrative and gameplay and blows a big fat raspberry at the various authors that say the two are intrinsically opposed.* And then I want to play it.

This is definitely one of the best books on game design that I have read.A frequent complaint I have about game design theory is that it often breaks down when trying to apply it to an actual game. Things like MDA and the lenses of game design sound good on paper but in my opinion, don't work very well when you're in the middle of a game project and there's a million different moving pieces all at once that are constantly evolving. In situations like these, you need simple and flexible design rules that allow you to look at the smaller scale and NOT the bigger picture, because looking at the bigger picture all the time only means you're missing out on the short term effects of your design which exist at the micro level, which is disastrous in the long run for the feel of your game.Upton's idea of "constraints" and "state" and their interplay, constitutes a very adroit and flexible way of thinking about the effect that your design has on the structures of play, and is in my opinion a vital and important part of game design theory that deserves wider recognition.

My thinking on this book has continued to change since reading it. I was initially frustrated with some of the ways it used theory (semiotics and narrative) because it doesn't dive deeply into these topics. But Upton does a great job of tackling these topics and their connections with each other in a way that's fresh, and moves the discussion forward. So while it might not be a lengthy treatment of whatever field you're from, it's a wonderful exploration of how different fields in game studies can come together to understand games and their meanings.

Just got it for Father's Day. Why did I ask for it? Because Jackie Kashien's interview with Brian Upton on her podcast "The Dork Forest" sold me on Brian Upton. Man. Very cool. Here's a link to the podcast: [...]

From Booklist

The proliferation of graphic-novel Shakespeare adaptations continues. Cardy and Nicholson’s artwork gives the characters a nicely expressive range; the color palette is bold, luminescent, and mood evoking; and the well-designed panel flow presents an engaging version of the classic comedy. The volume is clearly intended for classroom use, and it is one of three versions: original text (presenting the play in its entirety), plain text (which uses contemporary language), and quick text (a heavily abridged adaptation). The back matter discusses how to convert a play into comics format, offers a short biography of Shakespeare, and touches on the Globe Theatre. Grades 7-12. --Francisca Goldsmith

So far, in the last year and a half, I have read 15 of the Arden Shakespeare Collection and 'A Midsummer's Night's Dream' has the worst introduction of them all. The writer spends so much time with the history of the play's productions that the work itself suffers. In an introduction the work is the key, not its history. Analysis of plot, character development, metaphysics, key phrases, the characters' relationships to one another and to the text, motives, etc, are crucial, for me, before I read the play. I have nor seen that many of Shakespeare's plays, but I find reading them rewarding and exciting. But first, before I get started reading the text, I need a warm-up that smoothes me into the play. The writer of this intro, Chaudhuri, holds the key components of Dream at a distance, while going on and on about where it was produced, who produced it, the actors who played certain characters, its translation into movies, TV, opera, while staying completely away from the text. I want to know about the characters in the play and their interrelationships with one another, an analysis of crucial scenes and how they move the plot forward, how key phrases reveal the inner depths of the characters' motives; in short, a body of knowledge that helps me along as I read the play. Its production history should be in the last few pages of the introduction, not take up more than half of it. I have gone ahead with the reading of Dream without the aid of a good intro and it is moving along nicely but an in-depth intro would have been so helpful.

I love this series of Shakespeare books, but this one in particular hits a soft spot with me. I bought my first copy almost 20 years ago and brought it with our family to an outdoor, picnic performance of the play. My five-year-old daughter, was hooked after the first faery leapt over our picnic blanket and ran to join the others on the stage. We followed along the story with this beautifully illustrated book and a solar glow bulb, this becoming one of the faeries. Fast forward to the present and my beautiful daughter is now producing Shakespeare Summer Festivals at her college. She came home looking for this book. I gladly handed it down (including the little dried flower we placed in it that night) and I immediately ordered another one for me. These series of books are perfect for introducing young readers to the works of the Bard, because they are not huge and intimidating but smaller, hard bound and beautifully illustrated. Our set is now a family heirloom.

When looking at classics this is one of the first one many people read. And for good reason. Shakespeare wrote a great tale of a love triangle, a fun-loving fae, and fae-king in love, and one night of errors ending well. Although I'm of the opinion that what happens off-page is a little dirtier than what happens on page :-PI know a lot of people who started with Romeo and Juliet and got turned off... I wish they'd give it another shot. This play is fantastic.

Even though I have read almost everything William Shakespeare wrote I have begun to read different approaches to the Bard’s work. Much of Shakespeare’s plays deal with tragedy but I just completed reading (Manga Shakespeare: A midsummer night’s dream illustrated by Kate Brown) one of his most amusing and funny plays. This was a fun read and is full of mystical fairies that just for the fun of it create strange love triangles among a group of teenagers. The mischievous fairies make a powerful love potion which creates chaos among the love interests of Hermia, Lysander, Helena and Demetrius. The fully illustrated 207 page soft cover book makes the story come alive. This is one of my favorite Shakespeare’s plays.I never like to give away too much information when reviewing any novel. Even if you have never read or seen any of Shakespeare’s plays this graphic novel is a good place to start enjoying the ancient master of poetry and prose, William Shakespeare.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Zen Poetry Moments: Haiku and Senryu for special occasions).

Bough this Calla edition of "A Midsummer Night's Dream"... twice -- first time, upon opening the book the binding that holds the pages became unglued from the spine -- completely -- returned and tried another and the same thing -- quite disappointed as you can imagine...but I figure that after two exact same defects, must be a production/batch issue.5 stars for paper material, illustrations, as Calla editions deliver in this department -- the problem would be with the binding/construction which gets a 1 star -- maybe they didn't actually try to open their books to see how the spines perform?I've checked other Calla editions and this issue seems limited to this title & also "A House of Pomegranates" -- beware of this potential issue if ordering these two books.

In a snack rut? Trail Grazing offers tons of recipes designed to deliver nutrition on the trail, whether you're backpacking, day hiking, or just plain hungry! I loved that these recipes require minimal prep, most of which is done with a microwave. Spending a couple of minutes in the kitchen before a weekend adventure results in fresh and better tasting snacks -- because I don't know about you, but I am tired of the bars and trail mixes I buy at the store.I've made a few recipes from Trail Grazing so far, and my favorite has been the Coconut Curry Cashews. The cashews browned beautifully in the microwave, and the coconut added a different kind of crunch. The mix did not last long in my house!

Was surprised by some of the recipes, Some I am looking forward to, have tried one that tastes great, very healthy and easy, to make. One thing that these recipes offer is versatility, while many can be eaten as a single, meal, the jerky options some are welcome additions to bland noodles , I must say I am impressed with this book and its unique ideas and it is not a build up of different variations of ramen or instant potatoes. No re-plays of G.O.R.P. I honestly would not have thought of these snacks. I did learn a few new and interesting recipes and ideas, and look forward to the authors next masterpiece. Each recipe has a clear photo and easy to read instructions. A must to add to your collection, yes this is a must have for those that are looking forward having some great Trail Grazing Snacks.

You know how when you buy a cookbook and look through it and you’d be lucky to actually like about 50% of the recipes? This is NOT that cookbook! Everything in this book is amazing! There are no page filler recipes. Each recipe is packed with nutrition and protein. They are simple to prepare as well. I am blown away. This far exceeded my expectations.

The author really knows this subject and makes recipes easy to follow. I like to details since I'm very new to making my own trail food. Try these recipes if you also want more variety in your backpacking nutrition.

I can't wait to try these recipes especially the jerky and leather recipes . Because of all these yummy recipes I'm thinking of going stove-less on my next back packing trip. Can't wait til spring! Thank you Heather for your books which have great hacks and recipes and your podcast which is inspirational, informative and a joy to listen to.

I am so thankful for this book!! It was such a great addition to the boring ole ideas I had for hiking. Every recipe is quick, easy, and delicious. I hike/camp with my kiddos a bunch, and their favorite part is always the snacks. But we were getting burned out on the same trail mix, traditional stuff. I love how simple every recipe is. There are SO MANY WAYS to add variety to these recipes.I also have their other cookbook, Trail Fuel, and was thrilled with the recipes in there. I was so excited when I heard there was a new book. This DOES NOT DISAPPOINT! So many of the backpacking recipes I've looked at before required special equipment, like dehydrators or finding specialty ingredients, that I had given up some of the do-it-yourself ideas. If you can toast a waffle-you can handle these recipes. Actually, many of them are just microwave cook!If you do ANYTHING outdoors, I would recommend purchasing this book. Also-those coconut curry cashews-yes! MAKE THOSE.

I'm not much for reading, but I love the outdoors and food. And if I can read something that adds to the enjoyment of both, I usually drop my "hate reading" attitude and suck it up. This was a pleasure to read, full of quick witted humor and tasty recepies (I've already tried a couple), and it makes me want to get out on the trail so I can wow my fellow hikers!A great addition to my kitchen library of "cook books" as well as my pile of backpacking gear! Great pictures of what the food should look like (no doubt taken by the "co-host Josh") and recepies that make my mouth water and tummy grumble (thanks to Heather). Thank you for another great resource, and for taking the monotony out of backpacking food!

If you are looking for snacks to fuel your adventures, but have grown tired of pre-packaged foods or simply want to make use of ingredients you already have at home, then this is the book for you!The recipes in Trail Grazing make use of yummy whole foods to power through a day out on the trail. As the author states, these recipes should not be considered 'diet food'. They pack a lot of calories in to a small, light space. I loved the tips and tricks scattered throughout the book (muffins stored in a Pringles can!), and every recipe I tried tasted great. I particularly liked the curry cashews, and will definitely be making those again. There were a couple of drawbacks for me. First, many of these recipes make a family-size batch. This is great if you're out with family or a group of friends, but can be a bit of a problem if you're only cooking for 1 or 2 people and you're making something with a shorter shelf date. Second, some ingredients can be a bit tough to find and/or expensive if you're outside the US. Fortunately, the recipes are quite forgiving of substitutions, and I didn't find anything that simply wouldn't work if swaps were necessary.Overall, I found this book to be a great way to branch out into more whole-food based snacks, and will enjoy cooking more from this book to prep for upcoming camping trips.(Full disclosure: I served as a recipe tester for this book)
