Wonderful continuing story.

Three volumes in, and I think I actually might enjoy this series more than Punpun going forward. Whereas Punpun lingered in its quieter moments, Dead Dead Demon seems to revel in its grounded absurdity and hinges more on the dialogue between its core characters. We still have a lot of those offbeat visuals, but this is a comparatively more vocal manga. Thematically similar, while setting a different tone; one that's more lighthearted, but with the capacity for some pretty weighty emotions.Volume 3 really starts to drive that home with a certain plot development dealing with loss, and it's handled really well considering the story maintains a relaxed pace. Here, we get a more detailed glimpse at the seemingly extraterrestrial "invaders", and it's honestly so abstractly handled, I still can't make heads or tails about any of it. At the forefront, you have this really fun, really relatable slice-of-life revolving around these young girls on the cusp of adulthood in a modern urban setting; with a sci-fi backdrop that is prevalent, but only really seems to breathe relevance in sporadic bursts. It works a lot better than you might think.

Volume 3 marks a shift in intensity for this series, continuing to escalate the stakes for the overall setting and plot while maintaining a sufficient focus on our central cast to keep the low key and quiet tone of the series at the forefront. Inio Asano’s talent for blending such a high stakes scenario into such a mundane central storyline is nothing short of absolute genius and makes this a series you absolutely cannot miss. This series up to this point is a MUST BUY!!

Review

“Alan Alda is a man with a mission. He began with a passion to help scientists communicate with a lay audience, then realized that the skills and insights of improv that he’d learned as an actor could be transformative for everyone for whom communication is essential. And that is who will find his book invaluable: everyone.”—Deborah Tannen, #1 New York Times bestselling author of You’re the Only One I Can Tell and You Just Don’t Understand“Alda’s curiosity, intelligence and desire to wipe out baffled and bewildered faces make a compelling case for clarity, communication and, always, empathy.”—Pittsburgh Post-Gazette “Bright, breezy, and upbeat . . . In writing this book, Alda follows his own advice: Communicate through storytelling.”—Washington Independent Review of Books “A swift and enjoyable journey.”—PopMatters“Alda uses his trademark humor and a well-honed ability to get to the point, to help us all learn how to leverage the better communicator inside each of us.”—Forbes “[Alda] was frustrated that men and women of science were not able to get their points across—to the public, the media, the government. Turned out they had never been trained to do so. So Alda set out to do something about it . . . Aided by his warm, conversational style, Alda’s message shows that the lessons also apply to the rest of us—and at a time when we could really use it.”—Milwaukee Journal Sentinel “Alan Alda breaks down the importance of face-to-face interaction in his new book, If I Understood You, Would I Have This Look On My Face? Alda developed this compelling conversation technique to help scientists distill down complex scientific principles for a general audience.”—Entrepreneur Magazine “A distinguished actor and communication expert shows how to avoid ‘the snags of misunderstanding’ that plague verbal interactions between human beings. . . . A sharp and informative guide to communication.”—Kirkus Reviews “An enlightening and thoughtful combination of shared experience and advice.”—Booklist“In this charming, witty, and thought-provoking book, full of rich anecdotes, Alan Alda describes some of the tools of communication that he teaches in his work with the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science and shows how everyone—from lovers to politicians to scientists—can benefit from being better communicators.”—Lawrence M. Krauss, author of The Greatest Story Ever Told . . . So Far“I’ve spent a lifetime trying to understand and use the art of communication. And then comes this fellow Alda—actor, interviewer, academic, and, mostly, student—who teaches me new, useable ideas. Communicating is at the heart of connectedness. Alda, with his laudable curiosity, has learned something you and I can use right now.”—Charlie Rose “Sit back and enjoy Alan Alda’s scientific journey of communication.”—Barbara Walters

Normally, I find this kind of book that has one big idea, an ideal candidate for skimming. There is often a lot of filler, and a tendency to pound away at that one idea until the book has reached an acceptable length for commercial publication. Alan Alda's book has the one idea, that we have to relate to each other in order to communicate, and then he embroiders on that theme for the rest of the book, but it is so entertaining and chatty, that I enjoyed it well after buying into the big idea. He uses examples from sociology and psychology studies as well as from his experiences as an actor. Nicely done!

5++ starsEvery single person on the planet should read this book. Alan Alda (who is a phenomenal writer) has written a highly informative book about the importance of communicating better. He then goes on to provide innovative and creative ways to help people do so. He is a natural storyteller, and the book is so entertaining that I completed it in one evening. Alda uses miscommunication stories from his own life to demonstrate how important it is for people to understand each other, and the issues that arise when we don’t. A major focus of Alda’s is teaching empathy. Relating to others creates empathy, and from there the desire to understand and cooperate is born. He also focuses on improving communication through listening with our eyes, using a story to make a point, eliminating confusing jargon, and paying close attention to what the other’s person’s face is telling us.If I Understood You is one of the most informative and useful books that I have read in a long while. After I finished it, I immediately emailed my daughter’s teachers suggesting they use it to support a creative combined math and science class that she took last year. I also think the techniques will help me with my own relationships, including my husband, children and friends. I highly, highly recommend this book to everyone. This book would make a great gift, and our world (and particularly our country right now) would be such a better place if everyone followed his ideas. Thanks to NetGalley and Random House for the chance to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Who knew that Alan Alda has been involved with teaching scientists and doctors to communicate with the rest of us since - well, at least since 2009, when he founded the Alda-Kavli Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook? Not me. And I'm delighted that he has, and even more delighted that he wrote a book about his efforts. As a teacher, coach, and consultant on topics of communication, conflict transformation, and empathy, I *really* appreciate Alda's insights as well as his tips and techniques, many of them learned through his days as an actor and in working with improvisation. I've happily adopted some of his ideas into my own work (with attribution, of course), and plan to explore the ideas of improv in the near future. This is a fun AND informative look at what it means for all of us to communicate better - not just scientists or medical folk - and includes suprisingly easy and remarkably powerful experiments and practices that are helpful for anyone seeking to be a better, more empathetic communicator. Which, in this era of so much upheaval, really ought to be all of us.

I attended a play with Mr. Alda some years ago when he played Richard Feynman. He was magnificent conveying a lot of the spirit of the real man. Alan Alda is no scientist and he will assure you of that fact. But, he has the ability to communicate as he demonstrated for over a decade presenting science innovations. This book attempts to talk about what it is to communicate ideas in the terms that Mr. Alda understands. That is, through improvisational acting tools. Some critics of this book dislike that approach to communication. The tools are not as meaningful to non-actors.Thus there are some negative reviews. I am more positive about the principles presented by Mr. Alda. He understands the problems with crossing disciplines and has some useful guidance for people.

I really enjoy every book that Mr. Alda has written, including this one. I found it very profound, and thought-provoking. I think it resonated with me more because I am also working on my MBA and my current class is communications. I was especially drawn in with the topics of empathy and dark empathy, but the one quote that has stayed with me is "if we're actually able to get inside someone's head, it's not a good idea of being guilty of breaking and entering." Mr. Alda shares his experience and knowledge and his own journey of relating and communicating. I am truly interested in learning about his experiences, and I'm glad he shares them.

It was "eh". There were parts I loved, but a TON of repetition and quite a bit of rambling about personal feelings. I was determined to make it to the end (and I did), but I was on (audible) 2+ by the end of the book because I was getting bored. It's not that long a book... It's not a book I would ever read again, I did regret buying it instead of checking it out from the library. If you like Alan Alda, it will probably be a fun read for you. The one good thing I got out of it was the use of improv to improve communication and reception skills so it's not 100% without merit.

This is a great book, an easy read, funny and quite informative. One has to understand though - this is NOT a strict GUIDE about how to get better at communicating. This is exactly what is said on the cover: Alan Alda's ADVENTURES (read - "experience") in the field of good communication. The book touches upon many topics that explain good communication and ways one can achieve it, the studies that were done, the insights professionals have. Again, this isn't a definitive guide, but it gives very good food for thought!I've read it once through and want to go back the second time to read and this time - take notes.

Life Without Ed: How One Woman Declared Independence from Her Eating Disorder and How You Can Too, by Jenni Schaefer Thom Rutledge

From Publishers Weekly

"The truth is we all talk to ourselves. We just need to get better at it," counsels psychotherapist Rutledge in this self-help book for women with eating disorders, which he wrote with one of his patients, Schaefer, a singer/songwriter and media personality in Nashville, who both binges and purges. As might be expected in a book that draws from both psychotherapy and country western music, the story concerns a fine woman and the no good man she's stuck with. In this case, the evil, controlling character is a non-person Schaefer names Ed, from the initials E.D. (as in eating disorder). Whether Schaefer is alone in her kitchen or dining with friends, she "hears" Ed telling her she resembles a "barnyard animal," that all the girls in her eating disorder therapy group are thinner than she is, or that it would feel good to go to bed on an empty stomach. "There is something inside me... that has chained itself to Ed with a heavy-duty lock and thrown away the key," she writes. With the help of therapist Rutledge, who shares his professional observations in sections entitled "Thom's Turn," Schaefer finally gains the strength to keep Ed at bay. Schaefer's literary construct of an interior voice will delight some readers and annoy others, but if it helps any readers overcome their own disorders, it's been effective. He taught her how to treat her eating disorder as a relationship, not a condition. By thinking of her eating disorder as a unique personality separate from her own, Jenni was able to break up with Ed once and for all.Inspiring, compassionate, and filled with practical exercises to help you break up with your own personal E.D., Life Without Ed provides new hope for the disorders that plague millions of women and young girls. this is a great book for anyone struggling with any type of Eating Disorder. It has helped me so much in my 2nd round of recovery by relating to almost all she says and actually applying the techniques as discussed by both the author and her therapist. I would also recommend it to family members to gain a glimpse inside the head of someone they love wrestling with an ED to try to gain some kind of awareness and understanding of the absolute all consuming mental obsession that it is.

This is a first hand account of someone going thru treatment for an eating disorder, aka Ed. If you or a family member or someone you know has an eating disorder this book will help you understand. While the book is an easy read, it's hard to read if you, yourself or someone you know is going thru this. Without knowing it, Ed had moved into my home and became my youngest daughter's BFF. Ed is a vindictive and malicious liar. Don't read this book all at once. Read one section at a time and apply it or work thru it with your family or therapist. It's still one day at a time for my daughter, but, now those days are becoming weeks. There might be slips and there will be times that are harder. Ed will always try to put his foot in the door and weasel his way back into our lives. Now, we can see him coming down the walk and slam the door in his face.

This book was amazing. It was like reading about myself. I am only starting my recovery. This book has really helped. I can't believe how I could relate to so much in this book.I really hope that I can be as successful as Jenni in divorcing Ed. I really hope I can do it. I would recommend anybody suffering with an eating disorder to read this book. Thanks Jenni for writing this book.

Having an eating disorder (ED) is a challenge, but this author inspired me to deal with mine. She named hers Ed to indicate it was an issue in her life, but it was not "her." I found this to be a helpful approach, and I've lived over three months without a binge! The author is honest and straightforward in her approach, and I found her very inspiring.

After years and years of dieting and binge eating and starving myself, only to end up heavier than I have ever been, I saw an eating disorder therapist. One of her first recommendations was to read this book which I found very helpful in understanding by I am this way. We use food to numb our feelings. It's an excellent book to start your recovery from food addiction and eating disorders.

This book should be labeled as a universal guide for all addictions. If you are OCD in any way read this book. Anorexia and Bulimia are all about control which puts it in the OCD category. This book does a great job of explaining the daily fight of the addition and how it seriously controls a persons every minute and how to take a serious course of action to recovery.

This book is a very personal and often excruciating story about battling an eating disorder. The author's approach was to personalize her disease as an emotionally abusive boyfriend who tries to keep her dependent on him by constantly reinforcing her negative self image. The approach seems to work, although she emphasizes that it is a lifelong struggle.

An excellent chronicle of Jenni's battles with her eating disorder. Gives the reader, if unfamiliar with the trials and tribulations of eating disorders, a very personal appreciation for what individuals living with such disorders go through. Apparently, even after Jenni made incredible progress toward living without "ED" (Eating Disorder), the temptations, potential relapses, and "ED's" demanding to come back into and control her life never really ends. The upshot is that she gained enough confidence, with the invaluable support of family and friends, to face "him" and keep him at bay. Her personal journey is worth the read!

Dior and His Decorators: Victor Grandpierre, Georges Geffroy, and the New Look, by Maureen Footer

Review

"The first account of how Victor Grandpierre and Georges Geffroy, the duo behind Christian Dior’s modern yet traditional interiors, helped the designer create a globally recognized brand." (Galerie)"To hear Maureen Footer tell it, Paris in the late 1940s mirrors America of late. “Society was polarized, people felt like they were losing their identities, and outside influences threatened what was considered the French way of life,” the style historian says on the eve of publishing her new book, Dior and His Decorators: Victor Grandpierre, Georges Geffroy, and the New Look (The Vendome Press, $60). But instead of snarking on Twitter, she continues, couturier Christian Dior and two friends—the charming Grandpierre, a former photographer; the melancholic Geffroy, an ex–fashion designer—went about making French classicism great again, though they stirred in English furniture, Finnish carpets, and Middle Eastern bronzes. The modish result was revolutionary, Footer says, “in a streamlined but cosmopolitan manner that answered, as design often can, the big questions of the time: Who are we? Where are we now? Where are we going?” (Architectural Digest)"As one of history’s most influential couturiers, Christian Dior was a man of impeccable taste. So, too, were fashion photographer Victor Grandpierre and designer/man-about-town Georges Geffroy, both of whom helped to translate the ethos of Dior’s sartorial New Look for the interiors of his 30, avenue Montaigne atelier, and his townhouse in the 16th arrondissement. (Dior himself had dreamed of studying architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts before being shuttled off to the École Libre des Sciences Politiques by his parents.) Design historian Maureen Footer chronicles how the Enlightenment, Belle Époque, and Empire periods inspired both spaces, effecting a scheme that, with the incorporation of modern elements, felt iconic and inspired rather than tired and fusty." (VOGUE)"If you're a lover of fashion and interior design, this is one book you should not miss." (Forbes.com)

From the Author

When a peek in a 1950s issue of Vogue unveiled Christian Dior's house in Paris to me, it unleashed an insatiable interest in the two Parisians who designed it: Victor Grandpierre and Georges Geffroy. Dior's house was not only worldly, sumptuous, and smart--it translated Dior's New Look vision into an interior design idiom. It was an irresistible opportunity to investigate the rarely-examined relationship of fashion and design. My mission--to explore the artistic intersection of these three men--provided endless discoveries. The modernity behind the romanticism of the New Look astonished me. Victor Grandpierre, a former journalist and photographer, created the gray and white neoclassical vocabulary that are relevant to and define Christian Dior to this day. Georges Geffroy, one of the most colorful characters in Cafe Society, was the longsighted designer of the post-war era, the first to mix Tibetan rugs and signed 18th century furniture. Christian Dior, a fashion genius conversant on architecture, contemporary music, and art, viewed his work through the lens of history. One aspect that fascinated me over and over again was how closely the years after World War II in France --a time of seismic technological, political, and global transition --paralleled our own time. In response, the New Look-- in both fashion and interiors--balanced a keen awareness of its time with the perspective of the past. While I traced the maturation of American style in George Stacey and the Creation of American Chic, this book takes a look at its equivalent in post-war Paris. And what a wonderful four years of research it was: constant back and forths to Paris, delving into libraries obscure and famous, interviews with duchesses and designers, Pierre Berge and Pierre Cardin, archives at Dior, and wonderful friends made along the way. Tiger silk velvet, tulle, and gilt will never be the same again for me, and I hope you will get caught in its magic, too.

I own over 1000 fashion books (my goal to own all published!), did I need to add another on Christian Dior, the answer is YES, when it is this extraordinarily researched and elegantly presented book by Maureen Footer. It is perfection and gives the reader a different slant of one of the most original and iconic of all fashion designers. Dior’s love for creativity in his fashion extends to his homes and salons and love of his gardens. Given the background of the elegant creators he worked with and Dior’s vision it becomes an intriguing story and the accompanying photographs are the icing on the cake. Adding to that icing an exquisite forward by another iconic influencer, Hamish Bowles. I do a monthly Fashion Book Club and this was a highlight of the series. Get this for yourself and for gifts, you will not be disappointed.

Just a fascinating book about Dior and the two main interior decorators he worked with. Reading this book is like being transported back to an era where high fashion and interior really mattered. The book is filled with beautiful photos and illustrations but it’s not just another coffee table book you’ll never read because there are wonderful stories and insights.

Eloquently written and beautifully illustrated, this book is not just a visual treat, it is a glimpse into the beautiful and luxurious world of Dior. Author Maureen Footer has captured the story of DIOR & HIS DECORATORS with such beautiful detail and insightful commentary. The images and history of Christian Dior’s career and his two decorator friends are wonderfully intertwined on the pages, this is also the story of a special time in France’s history, and the friendship of the three men. With great insight, Maureen Footer allows us,the reader, to be a part of the evolution of Dior’s aesthetic as a fashion revolutionary and an aficionado of interior design via his personal residences, his couture house, and the Dior brand. This is a book to enjoy for the stunning photographs of fashion and interiors, of course, but it is also a book that is a GREAT READ.

Maureen Footer's second book Dior and his Decorators opens our eyes to the world of the great Christian Dior in a way we haven't considered—through his decorators. Tracing the paths of Georges Geffroy and Victor Grandpierre, Footer threads the finest skeins of silk through Postwar Europe's beau monde for her readers, unearthing the rooms of these two decorators and their influence on Christian Dior. The decoration of Dior's first couture house was Grandpierre's vision. The antisceptic chic established in the fifties still defines the house today—in appearance and in branding—testimony to his unerring eye. Of course, Dior's chic was his inspiration, there's nothing quite like Dior, as Dior and his Decorators affirms Dior offered this on Elegance in his book Le Petit Dictionnaire de la Mode, "This is a word that would need a book to give it its right definition!... "For us, fortunately, we have Dior and his Decorators, undeniably elegant.

The first two books are linked together as a series, but the third one is not character-related to the other 2 in the series. I enjoyed reading the first book, "The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest," because it reminded me a little bit of Robin Hood but with a twist. The second one, "The Beautiful Pretender," continues the storyline from the first, but reminded me a little bit of Beauty and the Beast vs Princess and the Pea. Enjoyed the character development in the second story and was wishing there was a third one to continue this storyline. The last book in this collection, The Golden Braid" follows the fairy tale of Rapunzel, but with a great twist. You will enjoy all three and will want to continue reading other books by this author.

It is difficult to find stories that touch the heart like these do. I liked the fairy tale aspect to the books. The Golden Braid, in particular, is definitely the best Rapunzel retelling I've read. The other two novels were less retellings and more new, unique fairy tales of their own that used old elements from various tales. There is a Christian focus to the stories which was great, and all the romances were very sweet! I definitely will be reading more of the author's books, because these are now some of my favorites.

What a delightful set of stories. They really kept my interest. So many twists and turns. Suspence at its greatest. So clean and refreshing. Can't wait to read more. Thanks

I was totally captured!! I couldn't wait to settle down for the night and read! I am loving this author.

Very enjoyable stories! I appreciated the multi-book pack as I don’t normally like spending more than 3-4 dollars (although occasionally 5 or more) on ebooks.

Fun and interesting! I'm now a fan of Dickerson

I really enjoy Melanie Dickerson's books. This one is not her best, but still enjoyable.

I would rate these books 4.5 stars. The characters were extremely fleshed out and believable. I just adore a good medieval love story, and all three of these definitely delivered. Intense action, twists, and the tie-in with traditional fairy tales was stellar. I wouldn't call myself a 'strong christian,' but I loved the fact that these books were clean. It was refreshing for me to know I wouldn't have to skip a page or two of sexual language. I'd much rather read for the story value and for the story taking me someplace and time. The Christian aspect didn't bother me, I imagine when faced with great peril most people pray. I liked how the characters were virtuous and upheld their beliefs and vows. I had no intention of reading this author because I didn't want a book to preach to me. I was already 1/3 of the way into the first book when I realized it was Christian fiction. I really toyed with the idea of putting it down, but I was already hooked. I simply couldn't leave Odette, I needed to hear her story. The other two were equally enticing, Dickerson certainly knows how to create good characters. I am planning on reading more of her fairy tales, I hope they are all as good as these three!
