From School Library Journal

Starred Review. Grade 2-5–Tubman's religious faith drives this handsome, poetic account of her escape to freedom and role in the Underground Railroad. The story begins with Tubman addressing God on a summer night as she is about to be sold south from the Maryland plantation where she and her husband live: I am Your child, Lord; yet Master owns me,/drives me like a mule. In resounding bold text, God tells her He means for her to be free. The story is sketched between passages of prayerful dialogue that keep Tubman from giving up and eventually call upon her to be the Moses of [her] people. Deep scenes of night fill many double pages as the dramatic paintings follow her tortuous journey, arrival in Philadelphia, and later trip to guide others. Shifting perspectives and subtle details, such as shadowy forest animals guarding her while she sleeps, underscore the narrative's spirituality. Whether filled with apprehension, determination, or serenity, Tubman's beautifully furrowed face is expressive and entrancing. A foreword briefly explains the practice of slavery and an appended note outlines Tubman's life. The words and pictures create a potent sense of the harsh life of slavery, the fearsome escape, and one woman's unwavering belief in God.–Margaret Bush, Simmons College, Boston Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

Weatherford's handsome picture book about Harriet Tubman focuses mostly on Tubman's religious inspiration, with echoes of spirituals ringing throughout the spare poetry about her struggle ("Lord, don't let nobody turn me 'round"). God cradles Tubman and talks with her; his words (printed in block capitals) both inspire her and tell her what to do ("SHED YOUR SHOES; WADE IN THE WATER TO TRICK THE DOGS"). Nelson's stirring, beautiful artwork makes clear the terror and exhaustion Tubman felt during her own escape and also during her brave rescue of others. There's no romanticism: the pictures are dark, dramatic, and deeply colored--whether showing the desperate young fugitive "crouched for days in a potato hole" or the tough middle-aged leader frowning at the band of runaways she's trying to help. The full-page portrait of a contemplative Tubman turning to God to help her guide her people is especially striking. Hazel RochmanCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

I bought this to give to an adult English as a Second Language student. She absolutely adores it. We've read it twice. It made her cry because she sympathizes with Harriet so much. And my student is very religious, so she loves Harriet talking with God. It also encouraged her in her own writing. The illustrations are beautiful and tell the story even without the words - good for teaching extensive reading.I can't say how the book would go over with kids, but this teacher and her low intermediate student give it four enthusiastic thumbs up.

This book is so good! Wonderfully written account of Harriet Tubman and her role in the Underground Railroad. It brought me to tears the way it was written. Perfect for young kids and old alike.

Great book and easy for children to read and understand.

I loved the interaction between God and Harriet. It's an inspiring story about faith and perseverance. My son and I truly enjoy this book!

This is so beautiful and lyrically written.. Buy this book to honor a true heroine of slavery. My 4 year olds loved it and i loved reading it. This is our 10th slavery book and my favorite along with "Henrys Freedom Box". If your wondering how to talk to your kids about slavery times, this is a good start.

This book is very touching and inspirational. I enjoy reading it to my 5-yr old.

Great read and would be a good addition to the classroom.

I purchased 12 books for Black History Month and my son loved this one especially. The pictures are brilliant and the story is beautifully written for young minds to understand.

From School Library Journal

Grade 6 Up–This makeup artist to the stars has created a glossy, how-to guide for teens. Using a diverse group of young women as her models, Mason transforms them using seven distinctive makeup looks: "classic," "cool," "sweet," "sporty," "retro," "glamorous," and "way-out-rageous." The colorful, well-composed photographs show each look, while additional illustrations help re-create it. One section offers essential tips for good skin care and basic makeup techniques and another discusses matching makeup to one's star sign. The list of basic colors and types of makeup doesn't include brand names or exact colors, which may frustrate those looking to copy the look exactly. Fans of beauty how-to books will definitely enjoy the visual presentation. Readers particularly adept with a mascara wand and eye pencil will want to try out the tips featured in the book. Some of them may require a more practiced hand, but teens will appreciate knowing about them nonetheless.–Elaine Baran Black, Gwinnett County Public Library, Lawrenceville, GA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. The title of this book is misleading, because when I hear the word "teen," I usually think of pink glitter, sleep over parties, and garish makeup. Apparently that's not what Linda Mason thinks of when she hears the word. The book is well-written, with detailed descriptions of all makeup application techniques and makeup items, and she assumes nothing of the reader. The techniques she demonstrates are useful for everyday wear and perfect for anyone that's had trouble coordinating their eye and lip makeup without looking like a clown. Moreover, Mason includes girls of many races, with different facial structures, hair and eye colors, and recommends makeup techniques for almost all of them. Overall, this book is perfect for teens and adults alike - the only reason I gave it 4 out of 5 stars is that she sometimes assumes that consumers have more access to professional makeup than they do (she advocates mixing primary colors in addition to using pre-mixed ones, etc). Give this book a try; you won't regret it.

Not much useful info, no demonstration of techniques, and some strange/outdated makeup suggestions - like putting one big blue DOT of eyeshadow above and below each eye. :-/

bought this for our middle school library and it has been a great success, especially with a special needs student who is a reluctant reader. This books caught her attention and she has read it voraciously

good for learning

Perfect for my niece! Classic makeup styles as well as fun funky play styles. Great tips for eyebrows and skin

a little dated and doesn't cover a lot of the basics....purchased for a tween granddaughter---it did not capture her interest even tho she loves makeup

I bought for my daughter and she looked at it and said it was not very helpful for any purpose of doing makeup different ways, she knew everything in this book and more.

Wasn't what I thought it would be.

Review

A Publishers Lunch Buzz Book “Written with love, told with joy. Very easy to enjoy.” — Fredrik Backman, author of A Man Called Ove   “In a reader's lifetime, there are a few books that will be companions forever. For me, The Red Address Book is one of them. It will comfort you, and remind you of all the moments when you grabbed life with both hands. It is also an homage to the wisdom of women who have lived longer than most of us. One is never too old to learn that love is the only meaning of life—let’s listen to these women." — Nina George, author of The Little Paris Bookshop “A charming, fragile romance.” — Kirkus Reviews   “The Red Address Book is a love letter to the human heart. Full of tenderness and empathy, Lundberg has created more than just a novel—she has created a window into the soul.” — Alyson Richman, internationally best-selling author of The Lost Wife and The Velvet Hours “A warm and tender story about life, memories, and the power of love and friendship. A novel with heart and humor!” — Katarina Bivald, The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend “Sofia Lundberg has written a wonderful debut. The story of the life of Doris is told with a whole lot of love. It is full of warmth and compassion.” — Jan-Philipp Sendker, author of The Art of Hearing Heartbeats “You’ll be hearing a lot about Sofia in the new year if you’re in the UK, but if you’re in Sweden, France, Spain, Germany, etc., etc., you’ll already know how romantic and fabulous her novel The Red Address Book is.” — Lucy Dillon, author of Lost Dogs and Lonely Hearts “Doris’s life story is magnetic, and it’s her strong personality and pearls of wisdom . . . that drive the book . . . Fans of Fredrik Backman will find much to like here.” — Publishers Weekly

Sofia Lundberg’s novel, The Red Address Book, does not deliver the comfort and humor promised on the book jacket, although I do agree it is strong tribute to the wisdom of older women and intergenerational devotion. As 96-year-old Doris leaves a written legacy to great-niece Jenny of vignettes from her long and storied life, we also learn why their bond is so strong. I find uplifting that Jenny will head to a more fulfilling life because of Doris’ love, wisdom, and encouragement. That said, close to half the novel describes dailiness—Doris’ current physical frailties and struggles and Jenny’s children’s minutiae. I found this tedious and often painful. The premise of this novel, remembering stories of important people in your address book, sounds delightful. In this case, however, the tone is so depressing, the stories became flat and only mildly interesting. The Red Address Book is impressive as a debut novel, but I am sorry to report disappointing enjoyment factor from this reader.

As I write my review for The Red Address Book by Sofia Lundberg, I am conflicted. I expected to love this novel, but I didn’t. I liked it, but I didn’t love it. I initially thought this book would be somewhat light-hearted, but the novel tackles some very sad topics, aging, death, loneliness and elder care to name just a few.The story was interesting, but it felt dated. Granted, Doris, the main character, is 96 years old. She is frail and her life is ending. Perhaps, it was a purposeful decision to use antiquated language and terms of endearment like “darling” or “the little one,” but why then did I have a similar feeling when Jenny, Doris’ grandniece joined the story. She is a young, modern mother with a special affection for Doris, but her sections didn’t feel authentic to me.The author explains a great deal instead of allowing the story to unfold naturally. Also, big events are glossed over and there is a lack of an emotional response to major tragedies. Some storylines are left unfinished, and some of them defy believability.I may sound ultra critical, and I don’t mean to be, because there is much to like here. The premise of the novel was unique, using address book entries to tell the story was a smart approach. The short chapters helped move the story along. Doris is a fascinating character.I am sure there will be a following for this book, and many four and five star reviews. It could be a case of it is me not the novel. Don’t let my review discourage you from reading it.

Meet Doris, a 96-year-old woman living alone in her Stockholm apartment. She has few visitors, but her weekly Skype calls with Jenny—her American grandniece, and her only relative—give her great joy and remind her of her own youth. When Doris was a girl, she was given an address book by her father, and ever since she has carefully documented everyone she met and loved throughout the years. Looking through the little book now, Doris sees the many crossed-out names of people long gone and is struck by the urge to put pen to paper. In writing down the stories of her colorful past—working as a maid in Sweden, modelling in Paris during the 30s, fleeing to Manhattan at the dawn of the Second World War—can she help Jenny, haunted by a difficult childhood, unlock the secrets of their family and finally look to the future? And whatever became of Allan, the love of Doris’s life?My Thoughts: I was hooked on The Red Address Book from the very first page. I loved Doris, who at 96, looks back on the life she has led, filling in her memories from names in her address book. Stories she narrated for us in alternating storylines take us to the past and then bring us back to the present. I felt as if Doris was a friend, and that her experiences in the past could have happened to people I knew and loved.Jenny is her great niece, with whom she Skypes regularly. So when Doris falls, and then later has a medical crisis, Jenny comes to her in Stockholm, bringing along her youngest child, Tyra. The reunion fills in the blanks for Jenny, and also brings closure to Doris about some missing parts of her life. There was a great feeling of joy, as well as sadness, as the book came to a close. This memorable story is one that I will never forget, and it earned 5 stars,

THE MAIN CHARACTER DORIS 96 YRS OLD WAS BASED ON THE AUTHORS AUNT. I LOVED THIS BOOK AND THE WRITERS STYLE. DORIS HAD AN ADDRESS BOOK (RED) THAT SHE WOULD DRAW A LINE THRU THE NAME OF AN INDIVIDUAL WHEN THEY PASSED AWAY. THE WRITER MAKES DORIS THE WHOLE FOCUS OF THE STORY SHE TELLS THRU THE ADDRESS BOOK. IT GOES FROM CHILDHOOD THRU HER LIFE. I READ EACH CHAPTER WANTING MORE, I COULD NOT GET ENOUGH OF DORIS AND HER LIFE STORY. SHE TELLS ABOUT THE LOVE OF HER LIFE. THIS IS A MUST READ. I WOULD READ ANOTHER BOOK WRITTEN BY THIS AUTHOR.

Doris Alm is 96 years old and is writing about her life by recounting her relationships with the dead people in her address book. She doesn’t want her memories to die with her so she is typing them up for her only remaining relative, Jenny, her grand-niece. Doris and Jenny Skype to keep in touch. One day the home health aid is delayed in getting Doris her food and Doris falls while trying to get something to eat on her own. Her hip fractures and she ends up in the hospital.Jenny decides to go to Sweden to see her aunt before she dies. She asks her husband to try to find her aunt’s one true love if he is still alive because she thinks that her aunt needs to see him again before she dies. There was a lot of sorrow in the book but also a lot of love. I enjoyed reading the book.
