Chris Van Dusen is one of the best children's writers out there today. I am a Secondary School English Teacher with a 4 year old daughter. I can't believe how awful most modern day children's books pass as acceptable literature these days (lower the level and theme of literature = lower intelligence). Chris Van Dusen is very different, his writing is exceptionally good. My over all favourite book of his would have to be 'A Camping Spree with Mr Magee', but 'If I Built a House' (which has a slightly higher reading/comprehension level) is a magical tale of dreams, promising aspirations and hope. Great book, definitely a keeper.

As with "If I Built a Car" my daughter loves the fun, creative designs and enjoys pointing out fun details of the illustrations. I understand this author does his own illustrations and they are terrific other than a tendency towards dorky-faced people. The art style overall is smooth and detailed and meticulous, with a super fun 1950's look to everything. It is really appealing. We have a few other books by this author, including "The Circus Ship" and "A Camping Spree with Mr. Magee" and my daughter noticed Mr. Magee driving by with his dog in the background in this book! I really hate that impressionistic, sloppy art style some other books are illustrated with.The rhymes in this book flow very well, except one page where I felt the text was a bit weak. And with the exception of the no-gravity room, usually this writer has an actual logic to his crazy designs that makes them extra appealing... unlike another book we bought, by a different author, where the designs were so random and incoherent.This is a great book to encourage kids to think outside the box, and this author has become our favorite. As a mechanical type guy myself, it is exciting to see the enthusiasm my daughter has for these books.

Chris Van Dusen has a way with the rhythm to his rhyming in the vein of a Dr. Seuss book and others very talented and successful authors, another of his books "If I Built A Car" is an excellent examples.Written very well in the tradition of his other books," If I built a House" is for kids with large imaginations.Jack is using his vast imagination to design an outrageous house built for him, a child, that he himself has designed. The illustrations, which are first rate, then are drawn just as he designed, which are quite unique.A fun book to read and for children to see his actual design and ideas come to life.Chris Van Dusen is very successful in creating this excellent book, and the illustrations are an integral part in the story.

The illustrations tell a lot which is extremely important! This book definitely inspires imagination and conversation! Throughout the book I even found myself dreaming up things that would be amazing in my house. I think every parent can appreciate the kitchen-o-Mat. Cooks and cleans! What more can you want?! The dog character is super cute.

I wish I had a house like this!Chris Van Dusen's books are amazing. We discovered him through our library and fell in love with his writing and art. We've read all his books to our kids hundreds of times each and they are always fun to read and look at. His art is really breathtaking. Best of all we got to meet him and get our books signed and he's even super cool in person. A really nice guy. I highly recommend getting his entire collection of books.

This is one of our very favorite books by our favorite children's author! My boys love it! We even bought a copy for my son's kindergarten teacher who loves it too! The words flow smoothly, the pictures are bright and colorful and amazing and the whole thing is very imaginative and engaging.

This book is wonderful! I read it to one of my ESL classes and though they didn't understand much English they absolutely loved the book! They were enthralled with the pictures and it really got them excited. The story encourages imagination and the illustrations were fantastic! I highly recommend this book for young learners.

i think we need more books like this one - where real people share their real stories and how they see the world, as a parent, ally and advocate for the LGBTQ+ communities. in the last month, i've read about 8 or 9 other books on LGBTQ+ Christianity, and it was a refreshing perspective for me to see this perspective.i would recommend this book for any parent, ally or advocate of transgender or genderqueer people, coming from a conservative christian background and wondering how they can support transgender / genderqueer individuals... with a few important notesfor all of the good that i think this book does, there are some things that i have a hard time reading. specifically, the continue advocacy for a patriarchal Godhead with masculine pronouns, the referring to Jesus "abolishing" the old testament laws (instead of fulfilling), and a few other minor points that could easily turn a member of the LGBTQ+ community away.but it's important to remember: this book is not written by a member of the LGBTQ+ community, for the LGBTQ+ community. the author is a parent to a trans child, and this book is written for other parents of LGBTQ+ people.i would also say that the introduction to the book set up the discussion throughout as a little more two-sided than the writing ended up being. i appreciate the author's attempt at bringing open, honest and respectful discussion to the conversation. the introduction sets up the book as a two-sided discussion, which would present for example the "nature vs nurture" argument. i was honestly fearful of this, as i started reading the book... worried that there would be too much of an invitation for members of the LGBTQ+ community (myself included) to be "polite" and "respectful" toward the power dynamics that oppress us. what i found, thankfully, was a well articulated discussion of the nature side of the conversation with a sprinkling of "but other people believe in nurture" throughout.in spite of the flaws that i see - which, again, are my own theology, political and sociological perspectives - i think this book is a must read for parents, allies and advocates of trans/queer people. you will be well rewarded for your time, in reading this book.

Let me start by saying Ms. Evans took me on another journey with her. She made me stop and think, “What if, Why, How,” and she was having the same questions. What did she do, she started researching until she found the answer. She is exploring a fairly new subject, wants to know the answers and is sharing the information with us. It is a subject all of us need to know more about and understand. Some are totally disowned by parents, ignored by the general public, are bullied until they finally commit suicide. And I ask myself “is that right,”? The answer I reached was, NO!They are conceived and born just like you and I, so why cannot they be given a chance like you and I? Eunuchs have always been a question in my mind as did Ms. Evans.Where did she go to answer her question, the Bible. She had a question, she researched it until she found the answer. Regardless of whether this has happened in your family, a friend’s family, this book and her other book, “I Promised Not To Tell,” are very Educational, well written, and informative. I was in Education and wished I’d had it to read years ago. Some of the kids would confide in me, I listened as they were tormented within their own bodies, but knew not how to advise other than prayer. Ms. Evans, you are great, keep up the good work. My child came out a year ago. He never hid his identity. I always hoped it would change. I am now embracing my true son and hope this world will see him for the awesome compassionate human being he is. My biggest fear is not my son being who he is. My biggest fear are the haters who hide behind religion. They use their religion as a platform to abuse all that they are ignorant of. I read this book to be able to communicate effectively with anyone about this issue. Having raised this child, there is no doubt in my mind that you are born exactly as you are to be.

Loved this book! Everyone should read this book, even if you’re not religious, to better understand transgender people. The mom who wrote this did a lot of research and offers us some solid arguments for being positive and affirming to trans people. As a parent of a trans male myself and a Christian, i love the scripture references the author included and have highlighted them for return reading. This book was well written and very enjoyable. You will be blessed by reading it!

I am a transgender woman and therefore appreciate the effort here to try and enlighten interested individuals on the subject. I am a elderly trans woman who worries deeply about those young individuals and especially those who have been rejected by their own families. I have lost many people who were close to me in the past, as stated hear no one would choose this life not because who we are but how society treats us. Don't be so fearful of what you do not understand.

This book perfectly sums up the seemingly inconsistent struggle between transgender people, the Christian Church, and God. Conflicting views abound and its easy to get confused especially when raising a transgender child yourself, having praised and loved God your whole life, only to be told by some that your child simply isn’t good enough or is actually possessed by demons. This book will dispel fears and gives a good wholesome perspective on the situation. Just breath, continue to love God, continue to love your child, and don’t let ‘other people’s opinions’ confuse you. Highly recommended. CAB

I was so desperate to find a solution, but it turns out that I had a yeast infection that was easily cleared up with a prescription. The only secret in this book is hydrogen peroxide. I REPEAT...THE ONLY SECRET IN THIS BOOK IS HYDROGEN PEROXIDE. Give yourself a douche (long and slow) with a mix of hydrogen peroxide and water frequently in order to kill the bad bacteria. In order to keep the good bacteria, take probiotics. You're welcome.

I followed the instructions and my BV came back soon after I stopped. Went to the boric acid capsules with better results

Most of this information can be found scattered around the Internet, but it is nice to have it all together.

I've suffered from BV for the last six months, which has been painful, extremely frustrating and very expensive. After numerous rounds of antibiotics and Yeast Arrest without success, I started to look at other options. The book was an easy read and I was done in an evening. There wasn't a lot of new information on the subject but I felt slightly justified after reading it. The one thing I was looking for in the reviews for this book was someone who'd tried the Peroxide regiment and was successful. When you're desperate, you just need a glimmer of hope! I tried the Peroxide regiment and within two days started to feel better. By day three I no longer had any symptoms but continued for five days just to be sure. It's a very simple solution and it absolutely works.

This book outlines what BV is, how or why women get this infection, and why antibiotic treatment for it is only a temporary cure. It gives some home treatment remedies and some common sense advice for self care such as "wear clean underwear". Really?! If you were just diagnosed with BV for the very first time and did not have a clue about it, this might be a good book for you to read, but even if that were the case, you could absolutely get every bit of information in this book by doing an Internet search for it. The key is to restore balance of good vs bad bacteria and you can do that by using a 50/50 solution of 3% hydrogen peroxide and distilled water to douche with 2x a day for 3 days to kill the bad bacteria (and not the good), and follow up with taking probiotics to replace and reinforce the good guys. That's the cure. The rest is stuff you already knew.

I read this book and learned some things in it that shows you how to maintain bacteria vaginosis with peroxide and water. So I gave it a try and it really works! I'm glad I purchased this book is very helpful. Thank you

I was really excited to try anything this book had to offer but just like the many others, too good to be true. If your looking for a temporary fix, this is the book for you.

Very repetitive and not helpful. I do not recommended this book to anyone.

Scattering Ashes could have been written in my own family's house, and while the names change, the pathos which accompanies families dealing with end of life of a parent are universal. Joan Rough unlayers the traumas all families heap upon each other, consciously or not-- that inevitably boil back to the surface during an impeding death. Feelings of inadequacy, of disappointment, of rage, of despair that we all try to keep locked inside jump around like a jack in the box. This book is a must read for anyone going through end of life dilemmas-- if only so they know that their loss is not unique and that others are going through it, have gone through it and will go through it. It should be included in the waiting room of every hospice care center.I met the author at the 2017 Gaithersburg Book Festival and had her sign a copy of the book to my mother.

This was not an easy book to read, but it was a worthy one. This is a consistently well-written memoir with occasional incursions of beautiful, almost poetic, prose about a very painful subject: the continuing abuse of a daughter, now a mature woman, by a mother she is caring for through to death. I felt enormous empathy for the author who seemed to struggle her whole life for a little bit of peace, beauty and joy that it is clear she wholly deserved. Owning that understanding -- that she deserved it -- is her central therapeutic work and she takes the reader along with her as she learns to embrace her worthiness.Mountain Keeper

While I am not facing the imminent death of my mother,like the author, this book is a must read for anyone with a complex mother daughter relationship. There were countless moments where I could relate fully and I know this book is something I will pull references from as that relationship goes down the inevitable road.

When this kind of honesty is put into words, only thing you can do is cry. Joan's easy style deceives the depth of her journey to wholeness through the challenges of care-taking her very recalcitrant mother! Joan even got to the bottom of this which made her way to deep, deep family forgiveness. The kind of forgiveness that transcends generations. New paths are found for her and my family to celebrate being family. Thank you Joan for putting your journey into words. Now there is encouragement for us to find the way to heal our wounds!

This was a good memoir I could relate to. The author had a physically abusive childhood and then had an emotional and psychological abusive adulthood caring for her mother. It is a story of hatred, love, loss and letting go.

This book is not unlike one I am writing, yet so different. I love that the author learned to love herself and found the realness of forgiveness. Letting go of an abusive childhood brings about a new person. She walked us do we her path with kindness. Thank you.

An honest and insightful account of a daughter's experience as she cares for narcissistic and abusive mother in her last years of life. Rough holds nothing back, making it a terrific read for those going through similar situations. Readers will appreciate the uplifting ending.

Thank you, Joan for your candid, heartfelt and gut wrenching book. I am inspired to continue writing my Memoir after reading yours, especially because I also have family issues which is why I've​ put my Memoir on the back burner. I appreciated your clear and concise writing style so much. You drew me in with every chapter and I felt your pain. I also loved your willingness to honestly look at yourself and your anxieties, PTSD issues etc. and in the end your forgiveness was commendable.
