This text is an excellent way to understand new ways of thinking about transgender life in the U.S.. If you are unfamiliar with the subject, this text will help open your eyes and probably challenge your beliefs about gender as well as where the problems might lie in terms of poverty, hate, and violence. Dean is rather transparently against capitalism in all it's faces, which is refreshing, but if you have a deeper understanding of economics, you might not be able to take all she says in (granted, if you are a disciple of Wolff that may not be true at all). Dean here gives an excellent introduction or advanced view of ALL things transgender, though it might be said that he claims to represent non-white transgender a bit more than he actually does. Regardless, I heartily recommend this text to anyone with a mind open enough to read it. Enjoy it for what it is, I know I did.

For anyone looking to do real work in the world this is a "must read"! This is a clear concise guide for activists, students and would be non profit directors.

Everything that he writes in this book, and that I've heard him talk about in person is motivating and calling for radical change.

When Angela Davis recommends something, run the other way, and run fast.Instead of directly answering the arguments presented in the book, I will let it speak for itself. Here are some of the highlights-"A critical trans politics imagines and demands an end to prisons, homelessness, landlords, bosses, immigration enforcement, poverty, and wealth." (P. 68)-"From that vantage point we can strategize about how to use legal reform tools as part of a broader strategy to dismantle capitalism's murderous structures." (P.93)-"For those living in white communities not targeted for policing and imprisonment, the criminal punishment system may appear to be a protector..." (P. 125)-"Racism determine who will be arrested, what public benefits programs will be cut, and what behaviors will be considered criminal." (P.26)-"We must examine how racism, sexism, capitalism, xenophobia, settler colonialism, and ableism combine to produce and sustain these violent systems of distribution..." (P. 161)Quotes such as these litter the pages of the book without establishing anything of coherence.I lost count of how many times the author threw around terms such as sexism, ableism, racism, xenophobia and others along the same line. They ceased to mean anything before long.

A phenomenal exploration of an often-invisibilized topic. Well written, concise, and bitingly clear about what needs to change. A radical re-envisioning necessary for anyone who is invested (or even interested) in LGBTQI issues. I cannot recommend highly enough!

I cannot possibly recommend this book highly enough. It will change how you view the LGBTQI justice movement, U.S. politics, and countless social institutions in the U.S. Should be standard reading in poli sci and queer theory classrooms everywhere.
