Review

"The first account of how Victor Grandpierre and Georges Geffroy, the duo behind Christian Dior’s modern yet traditional interiors, helped the designer create a globally recognized brand." (Galerie)"To hear Maureen Footer tell it, Paris in the late 1940s mirrors America of late. “Society was polarized, people felt like they were losing their identities, and outside influences threatened what was considered the French way of life,” the style historian says on the eve of publishing her new book, Dior and His Decorators: Victor Grandpierre, Georges Geffroy, and the New Look (The Vendome Press, $60). But instead of snarking on Twitter, she continues, couturier Christian Dior and two friends—the charming Grandpierre, a former photographer; the melancholic Geffroy, an ex–fashion designer—went about making French classicism great again, though they stirred in English furniture, Finnish carpets, and Middle Eastern bronzes. The modish result was revolutionary, Footer says, “in a streamlined but cosmopolitan manner that answered, as design often can, the big questions of the time: Who are we? Where are we now? Where are we going?” (Architectural Digest)"As one of history’s most influential couturiers, Christian Dior was a man of impeccable taste. So, too, were fashion photographer Victor Grandpierre and designer/man-about-town Georges Geffroy, both of whom helped to translate the ethos of Dior’s sartorial New Look for the interiors of his 30, avenue Montaigne atelier, and his townhouse in the 16th arrondissement. (Dior himself had dreamed of studying architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts before being shuttled off to the École Libre des Sciences Politiques by his parents.) Design historian Maureen Footer chronicles how the Enlightenment, Belle Époque, and Empire periods inspired both spaces, effecting a scheme that, with the incorporation of modern elements, felt iconic and inspired rather than tired and fusty." (VOGUE)"If you're a lover of fashion and interior design, this is one book you should not miss." (Forbes.com)

From the Author

When a peek in a 1950s issue of Vogue unveiled Christian Dior's house in Paris to me, it unleashed an insatiable interest in the two Parisians who designed it: Victor Grandpierre and Georges Geffroy. Dior's house was not only worldly, sumptuous, and smart--it translated Dior's New Look vision into an interior design idiom. It was an irresistible opportunity to investigate the rarely-examined relationship of fashion and design. My mission--to explore the artistic intersection of these three men--provided endless discoveries. The modernity behind the romanticism of the New Look astonished me. Victor Grandpierre, a former journalist and photographer, created the gray and white neoclassical vocabulary that are relevant to and define Christian Dior to this day. Georges Geffroy, one of the most colorful characters in Cafe Society, was the longsighted designer of the post-war era, the first to mix Tibetan rugs and signed 18th century furniture. Christian Dior, a fashion genius conversant on architecture, contemporary music, and art, viewed his work through the lens of history. One aspect that fascinated me over and over again was how closely the years after World War II in France --a time of seismic technological, political, and global transition --paralleled our own time. In response, the New Look-- in both fashion and interiors--balanced a keen awareness of its time with the perspective of the past. While I traced the maturation of American style in George Stacey and the Creation of American Chic, this book takes a look at its equivalent in post-war Paris. And what a wonderful four years of research it was: constant back and forths to Paris, delving into libraries obscure and famous, interviews with duchesses and designers, Pierre Berge and Pierre Cardin, archives at Dior, and wonderful friends made along the way. Tiger silk velvet, tulle, and gilt will never be the same again for me, and I hope you will get caught in its magic, too.

I own over 1000 fashion books (my goal to own all published!), did I need to add another on Christian Dior, the answer is YES, when it is this extraordinarily researched and elegantly presented book by Maureen Footer. It is perfection and gives the reader a different slant of one of the most original and iconic of all fashion designers. Dior’s love for creativity in his fashion extends to his homes and salons and love of his gardens. Given the background of the elegant creators he worked with and Dior’s vision it becomes an intriguing story and the accompanying photographs are the icing on the cake. Adding to that icing an exquisite forward by another iconic influencer, Hamish Bowles. I do a monthly Fashion Book Club and this was a highlight of the series. Get this for yourself and for gifts, you will not be disappointed.

Just a fascinating book about Dior and the two main interior decorators he worked with. Reading this book is like being transported back to an era where high fashion and interior really mattered. The book is filled with beautiful photos and illustrations but it’s not just another coffee table book you’ll never read because there are wonderful stories and insights.

Eloquently written and beautifully illustrated, this book is not just a visual treat, it is a glimpse into the beautiful and luxurious world of Dior. Author Maureen Footer has captured the story of DIOR & HIS DECORATORS with such beautiful detail and insightful commentary. The images and history of Christian Dior’s career and his two decorator friends are wonderfully intertwined on the pages, this is also the story of a special time in France’s history, and the friendship of the three men. With great insight, Maureen Footer allows us,the reader, to be a part of the evolution of Dior’s aesthetic as a fashion revolutionary and an aficionado of interior design via his personal residences, his couture house, and the Dior brand. This is a book to enjoy for the stunning photographs of fashion and interiors, of course, but it is also a book that is a GREAT READ.

Maureen Footer's second book Dior and his Decorators opens our eyes to the world of the great Christian Dior in a way we haven't considered—through his decorators. Tracing the paths of Georges Geffroy and Victor Grandpierre, Footer threads the finest skeins of silk through Postwar Europe's beau monde for her readers, unearthing the rooms of these two decorators and their influence on Christian Dior. The decoration of Dior's first couture house was Grandpierre's vision. The antisceptic chic established in the fifties still defines the house today—in appearance and in branding—testimony to his unerring eye. Of course, Dior's chic was his inspiration, there's nothing quite like Dior, as Dior and his Decorators affirms Dior offered this on Elegance in his book Le Petit Dictionnaire de la Mode, "This is a word that would need a book to give it its right definition!... "For us, fortunately, we have Dior and his Decorators, undeniably elegant.
