I’m a long-time fan of Rachel Caine, but when this book came out because I struggled with it. I had last looked at Romeo and Juliet in junior high school decades ago.In Prince of Shadows, the story is told through Romeo’s kinsman Benvolio, a very secondary character and Rosaline, Juliet’s cousin who doesn’t have a line in Shakespeare.Romeo and, especially, Juliet are fairly minor characters.So the first time around, I struggled badly with keeping plot and character straight and put the book aside.Then this semester I took a Shakespeare class that included Romeo and Juliet. When I opened Prince of Shadow again, I got it.In some ways, Caine’s telling captures the futility and hatred of the feud between the families better than the play by showing us the anguish of those caught up in it. The body count of Prince of Shadows is even higher than in Romeo and Juliet. Some of the dead were evil, some innocent, but many just people caught in tragedy.The book generally follows Shakespeare‘s story. There’s a tragic homosexual love that, while it feels real, also feels too modern for Verona. There’s a curse that I thought took away from Shakespeare’s question of whether the lovers were doomed by fate or by generations of hate.The book ends somewhat more happily than the play (though Romeo and Juliet still do die). But I was left with the same feeling of a powerful story full of love, sadness and futility as I left with the play.I’ve read Rachel Caine thinks this is one of her favorite books even though it wasn’t a commercial success.It is indeed absolutely one of her best pieces of characterization, setting and use of language, and I’ve read just about everything she’s written.Just make sure you’re well familiar with the play before you read it.

OMG! This book is wonderful.A retelling of the Romeo and Juliet saga but from the POV for Romeo's cousin Benvolio. Usually I am not a huge fan of books told from a male POV, but here I loved it, Benvolio has such a tortured and honest voice.The prose is lush and atmospheric/moody.A few examples:"I had kissed her before, but lightly, gently, and this was no gentle thing..""Rosalind Capulet tasted like all I had ever wanted in my life, and now I knew that for truth"" Then I kissed her, and I tasted tears, and flowers, fear and hope, dread and dreams. Her lips were soft and warmlike the petals of a sun heated rose.."What a lovely homage to Shakespeare. Please read this book- Benvolio and Rosaline' s story has a HEA and you will love it!

Rachel Caine explores further into the world of Montagues and Capulets with Romeo’s cousin Benvolio taking up the story from his POV. And what of fair Rosaline, the love that Romeo seemingly overthrew for that of Juliet? Well, she piques the interest of Benvolio, our Prince of Shadows, and together they must try to stop the doom that has labeled both families as victims before everyone, including themselves, suffers.Benvolio, a seemingly Robin Hood-type character stealing from those whom he deems have done wrong, has been told his entire life that he is the ‘extra’ Montague. His job is basically to watch after Romeo, the true heir to Montague. It was an interesting choice I believe for Caine to basically call out how often dimwitted and impulsive Romeo could be from the eyes of his (one year senior) more mature older cousin. There are many people who romanticize the love story of Romeo and Juliet when in truth they were two almost-children. The same can be said for Rosaline being Juliet’s more serious mature cousin, sister of the Prince of Cats Tybalt. Ben and Rosaline seem to take up the voice of reason where the warring families are concerned. Both ultimately want peace after seeing so much death and deception already between the houses.What Caine did really well with this story is she fleshed out some of the characters, such as Mercutio, who already commanded attention in the original play, but we find him here a troubled and haunted young man who seeks revenge upon those responsible for his lover’s death. This also gives background to Mercutio’s famous “a plague on both your houses” quote. We get to fully understand the buildup of that moment, where this curse stems from and the magical belief that gives the curse its life. It’s really interesting thinking back to the original story with this new perspective in mind.Prince of Shadoes does mix in some more memorable quotes and scenes from the original play (“Do you bite your thumb at us, sir?”). I found this delightful and it gave a viewpoint as to where we were in conjunction with the original story, of which I oftentimes found Prince of Shadows to drag a little in places. Where it falters is that her words don’t always necessarily match up in phrase and use to that of the great Bard. So at times the writing seems to flow very well and eloquently and other times it shows signs of the modern era in which it was written.Knowing the story of Romeo and Juliet, Prince of Shadows cannot help but have moroseness hanging over it. Yet while reading, you keep holding on to hope that maybe Caine would change the ending. Regardless of what happens you are still left with a lot of senseless death and destruction, but it’s kind of the lesson of the story right? See these senseless acts and mourn them, but learn from them and grow and make things better. We, at least, are left with that last bit of hope for the future.

I immediately fell in love with this book when I began to read it. I laughed with delight in the writing style I was viewing and the bluntly-put words and their arrangement, as well as the images they elicit. As I read through the pages, the thought came to me that we could all be considered faceless in one way or another as most walk through their lives attempting to "find themselves" and testing out which face to put on in which set of company.As I continued to read, the story took interesting turns, even including vampires, which I enjoy stories about, but did not expect to find in this book.Basically, this book is just too cool in my perspective and I hope lots of people read it and enjoy it as much as I have.

My Review: This one was a little different for me, it stepped a little further into the Sci-Fi world than I am normally comfortable with, but the concept really caught my eye. I really was intrigued by the world that Dustin created and the unique characters (I love the card theme throughout). I kind of feel that this should have been made into three books. The first arc was very well developed and I loved the storyline, however as we went into the second and third arcs I felt as though things began to jump around and become too rushed. It feels as though with a little more work the second arc could be a novella, introducing new characters and giving their backgrounds and then the third arc could be a second book in the series. All that said the storyline is very interesting and the twists in the ending are shocking.My Rating: For being out of my genre comfort zone Faceless captured my interest. I really enjoyed the characters that Mr. Sanchez created. I think the book could use a little editing and developing for some minor typos and filling out of the story. I give it a rating of Two Paws.

This futuristic fantasy is explicit and reads like a graphic novel. It outlines a world where NightCard a large organisation based in France genetically experiments with mutant abilities. These experiments are contained and pitted against each other.When one such experiment dreams to be free a series of events ensues. But is he the first to want freedom?This reads like a YA novel aimed at young adults. It's full of action and is entertaining but for me it lacks depth of character and a better grasp of grammar. It reads as if written in a particular street vernacular, which probably won't bug some people as much as it bugged me.

Faceless is an extraordinary and suspenseful novel that keeps you on your toes and surprises you at every turn. The characters are so multifaceted and complex that I felt I kept missing my friends for days after I finished reading. The underlying themes of identity mixed with futuristic-yet-plausible science fiction create a palpable atmosphere of daring excitement and suspenseful mystery. The romance between Faceless and his Girl in the Rain is sweet yet passionate, and feels as real as any romance, if not more so. Faceless is an incredible story that once you pick it up, you won't be able to put it down.

Such a lovely Marguerite Henry horse story for kids 6-10 or so! I read these 50 years ago in 25-cent book club paperbacks and am now buying these great hardcover copies for my 7-year-old granddaughter who is horse crazy. She has read Justin Morgan Has a Horse and is now on Misty. These are so terrific; all kids should read them. I have studied children's literature all my life, and M. Henry is tops in the horse fiction field after all these years. Even if the grandfather's speech may seem a little quaint to modern ears, the story is so worthwhile, and the way those kids love those horses is so real, and the horse behavior is so true, that you are transported as a reader into their world. A bonus is the little explanation in each book about the beginnings of the horse colony at Assateague Island, and the history of the pony penning days. Author Henry notes in each book, by the way, that all characters in the book are real, and she lists them on an inside page, thanking them all! One fly in the ointment is a dating issue (1949), and that is the discrepancy of the two juvenile characters, who are brother and sister. They act equally and are treated equally--except in the pony penning events, in which girls are not allowed to compete. I assume that is no longer the case, but that occurrence would need to be discussed with young readers. Overall, a gem of a book for animal story lovers, horse lovers in particular, and, really, anyone who loves a good story.

As with all of the Books about Misty and the BeeBees, this book is filled with charm, excitement, authentic emotion and beauty. We have so loved reading about the BeeBees and Pony Ranch, and we are so sorry that we have now read all of the stories about Misty of Chincoteague. Now I guess we will reread them!

Granddaughter loved this book and read it from cover to cover a day.

Classic series about ponies who live on an island and the girl and boy who take care and raise them. Best for an intermediate beginner reader, I bought the whole series as it's a continuation storyline...

I got to see the "Little Ponies" in the Chincoteague area while we lived in southwestern Pennsylvania and that was such a treat!!My great aunt had a book about the "Little Ponies" on her book shelf and to actually see the ponies, I was thrilled to see all of theponies as they frolicked in the water.

10 year old Daughter LOVES this book with all her tiny loving heart! Daddy hit a home run buying this for his little Gracie Joy.

About the Author

Paula Shoyer was disappointed with kosher desserts that tasted like cardboard, so she wrote The Kosher Baker: Over 160 Dairy-Free Recipes from Traditional to Trendy (Brandeis) to start a kosher baking revolution. A former attorney, Paula graduated from the Ritz Escoffier pastry program in Paris, France, and now teaches French and Jewish baking classes in the DC area, where she lives. Really great kosher baking cookbook to have! It has lots of creative as well as traditional treats for all of the Jewish holidays. The recipes are divided by holidays, and I also liked that each section is further subdivided into level of complexity with sections for easy and quick recipes and ones that require more time. The chocolate babka bites and the passover lemon cake are delicious! You wouldn't even be able to tell that the lemon cake is a passover recipe! I think this book is worth it just for the passover section alone, no more awful passover sponge cakes made with tasteless matzo meal! There are also lots of great photographs in this book, which is good for those of us who are more visual.

I don't even keep kosher, but I have been so thrilled with Paula Shoyer's book! I was looking for a great resource on Jewish holiday baking, and this book doesn't disappoint. I've probably tried about half a dozen of her recipes, and all have been terrific. I made the babka bites for my mother-in-law a few months ago, and she still can't stop talking about them. The combination of traditional and modern recipes works beautifully, and the images accompanying the recipes are absolutely mouthwatering.

I just received this book yesterday and I am already itching to get into the kitchen. I love Paula Shoyer and I love the way she writes. This book is accessible, user friendly and beautiful. Paula manages to make us all feel capable of creating beautiful pastries!! There are so many great Pesach recipes I am already contemplating ordering a second and keeping it clean for Pesach.Paula - Here's hugs and kisses to you!!

Great cookbook with easy to follow instructions whether you are making for the holidays or want to try out some new recipes. Highly recommend!

Gave this book as a gift for a seasoned baker. She thought it was amazing both in the pics and the recipes. She tried several recipes an says they are outstanding! Had to keep looking back at the Passover recipes to make sure they were for Passover they were so delicious! A big hit is this wonderful cookbook1

About the Author

Dr. Suzanne M. Miller was raised near Washington, DC and studied history and science at Harvard College. While attending Harvard Medical School, she began admissions consulting as a Harvard pre-medical tutor and then co-chair of the Eliot House Pre-Medical Committee. Absolutely helpful. Before reading I had no clue on the admissions process, and this book goes through each step one by one, almost as if I'm the one actually taking the steps (although that'll be my near future...)! In addition to the many helpful tips and advice, it includes several personal statement examples, work/activity examples and how to describe them, etc... Worth buying!!

Unfortunately, this book did not impress me at all. I was looking for more substance and detail, and this book failed to meet my expectations.

This book could have been done in literally 10 pages. She drags out this information to make a book. I found the table of contents easier to compile a time frame. Hard to believe people spend thousands for her services. If a med student needs to hire someone to manage the application process then they have no skills to manage med school and its demands.

This book was really helpful and has a lot of really helpful information about getting into med school.

I am currently applying to medical school, and I am using this week-by-week "Medical School Admissions Guide". I have to tell you, this is worth so much more than the $17.95 I paid for it. Thank you, Dr.Miller!

I have waited months to read this novel and it was worth the wait. I sighed with pleasure as I finished it. Thornton embodies Alice Roosevelt's voice and personality perfectly. The writing is superb, the narrative fantastic. The only flaw this book possesses is there isn't enough of it. Thornton accurately depicts the irrepressible, incorrigible, and unconventional actions of Alice. Spanning over nine decades, the life of ARL saw many changes and losses, but through it all, she soldiered on and continued to live on her terms, uncaring of others attitudes or opinions. While I did personally prefer the original cover art, the current cover conjures up one of the most delightful phrases ' cackled like a couple of hyenas' in the book. American Princess is a royal read. Thanks to First Read by Peguin for the advance copy.

I previously read and enjoyed David McCullough’s biography of Theodore Roosevelt, Mornings on Horseback, and ever since then I’ve been interested in learning more about the spirited and witty Alice. So I’ve been looking forward to this novel as soon as the subject was first announced - Stephanie Thornton is one of my favorite historical fiction authors - and it did not disappoint!Stephanie Thornton did a remarkable job of fitting most of Alice Roosevelt’s long life into the story. While reading, I was often struck by how modern Alice’s sensibilities seemed. It would be really interesting to hear her perspective on the current state of American politics if she were alive today!But the story also effectively showcases her moments of vulnerability, and passion. Alice was clearly an extraordinarily complex woman. She certainly had a determined spirit and a willingness to live life on her own terms. The best kind of heroine to read about!

I so enjoyed reading your book about Alice. As a woman born during the 50s, it is so interesting to get a better understanding of just how far women’s rights have come. And why is it that we didn’t have them from the beginning is beyond me. Anyway, thank you for the glimpse into our history as it helps us appreciate even more what we have today.

I know it’s only the second week of January 2019, but I’m going to make a prognostication: “American Princess” is going to be one of 2019’s must read books. I haven’t felt such an intensely intimate reading experience since the 2013 publication of Melanie Benjamin’s “The Aviator’s Wife.”“American Princess” tackles Alice Roosevelt Longworth, oldest daughter of Teddy, cousin to Eleanor and Franklin. Readers are taken inside one of America’s most intriguing characters. She was so popular that song and a color (like Alice Blue)) was named after her. She adored her Cuban pearls.The story opens in 1970. Alice is being prepped for surgery. She knows she’s lead a life that most people only dream of, but that doesn’t mean it had been easy.Her mother and paternal grandmother died on the same day, hours apart, in 1884, when she was two days old. Teddy was so distraught that immediately after the funerals, he packed his bags and left for the Dakota Badlands. Her aunt tried to get him to hold her, but he pushed her away, saying I can’t. She has her eyes…I just can’t. Alice spent the rest of Teddy’s life “trying to clamber onto his lap.” Eventually, the two became good friends and confidents.Readers will learn that no-so-lady-like Alice, the snarky, “gun-chewing, cigarette-smoking, poker-playing First Daughter,” had a mind of her own and wasn’t afraid to speak it.
