Although it does not contain the most widely-used Shakespeare monologues --and for good reason, as so many are overused-- it does contain some great ones, along with translation/context notes for those pesky early-English words and phrases whose meanings so often elude us. A valuable resource!

Exceptional for audition material! Each monologue has a brief foreword that helps set the scene/character/story, which is immensely helpful.

For actors who find themselves preparing for auditions for casting directors who want a melange of materials to show off their talents, this book does the trick. Monologues easiy categorized by length and topic, tragic to comic, it has made my life easier. And anyone who makes my life easier is a sidekick of mine. Thanks to the author for seeing a need to be filled and satisfying that need with insight that only one who has been there can truly know.

After searching lots of texts and coming up with maybe 1/4 of what this book has..... I am truly thrilled. It has a fantastic selection for women -- known and unknown monologues.

The book is exactly what it claims to be - a brief recap of the significant periods, events, and people of US history. None of the sections tell you the whole story, but there are some decent references for further reading, and I found that browsing Wikipedia and a world map while reading helped me fill in some gaps. Some content gets repeated (especially in the timelines of wars, etc) and some sections are oddly short (for instance, the Tonkin Incident section doesn't actually describe what happened, although it was later discussed in a timeline), but those aren't major issues. I liked the references back and forth through history that show larger patterns, cycles, and causes, and I appreciate the sustained attention paid to systemic inequalities, especially for blacks and women, that have persisted through US history.This is my first Kindle book (I'm reading it on a mac) so maybe this is an issue of the medium, but I find the formatting pretty clunky, and the lack of photos, images, and maps is unfortunate.

Where else can you get an easy-to-read overview of 500 years of American history--from who really discovered America to how we elected our first black president--and have FUN reading it? I saw author Kenneth C. Davis interviewed on CNN and was mesmerized by what he had to say and how he said it. When they flashed his credentials on the screen as the author of this book, I bought it immediately. This isn't your high school or college history textbook. This one is so much fun you might even stay up past your bedtime reading it! Quite simply, read this book and you'll be quite literate when it comes to the big facts about our nation's past--whether you want to win at Trivial Pursuit, impress someone at a cocktail party or (most important) develop an understanding of why and how things happened THEN that deeply impact our NOW.

Love this book. I'm about halfway through it and I can tell you that it's highly readable, entertaining and captivating. While sharing what some would think are arcane facts about our history, author Kenneth C. Davis presents the human part of our history so we get a much clearer picture of how we've arrived at this point. (NOTE: We're not always heroes in this life--we're just humans doing the best we can do at the time. This is a marvelous book and I highly recommend it!

I love history, but I didn't feel like me were always told the truth. First off who was around to tell Washington chop down the tree, how did we know it was a cherry tree. I feel like history has been misleading all my life. This book is wonderful I wish I had this book in school discussion we would had. I you are on the fence about purchasing this book, please go on you will not be disappointed.

Davis gives a very realistic picture of what was going good and wrong during the American history, and the influence in their concerned world.Again, the right literature that fills in the gaps of what we really didn't know.

If you're like me and don't remember much from American history classes in school, this book will help! I always hated history and didn't retain much of what I learned, so now that I'm trying to teach my kids I needed a refresher course. This book hits the highlights of history and does a great job of explaining everything. I feel like I've learned a lot.

Not a scholarly exposition of US history, but a fun way to get the essential facts. Great for youth and adults who are bored with the thought of learning history. If all US citizens knew history even at this level, our choice of public officials would be very different.

Obviously the title of the book is a misnomer. It is clear from the start that it is concerned only with American history. The goal of the author is to make history interesting so that people who have dosed off in history class can get interested again. In that regard, the book is successful. There is a strong narrative flow and a suspense that keeps you turning pages, despite the awkwardness of the question-answer format and the annoying repetitiveness. Pluses include the "voices", excerpts and quotes from historical figures and documents, as well as a long list of book recommendations for those wishing to delve further.The book suffers from major flaws, however: in many places, it is shallow as well as selective in its choice of topics. Much of the book boils down to a narration of "facts" without much analysis, the kind of information you could get reading headlines in news archives. While there is an argument for not making the book excessively long, much space is wasted by those "timelines" of every war and crisis that serve no purpose other than to bore the reader to death.Secondly, the selective choice of topics is most visibly felt in the area of foreign policy. Much of the outside world is disregarded until it makes itself felt (e.g., during a war). In this, the book is symptomatic of isolationist American culture as a whole, where people will look up a country only after we have troops there. That tendency to ignore the outside world is precisely why American foreign policy is in shambles. If a book that proclaims the wish to re-educate Americans about history is woefully inadequate when it comes to describing America's relation with the outside world, then there is no hope!As an example, I choose the Middle East. That region, of vital importance to the US, recipient of the bulk of US foreign aid, heavy trade and influence, and location of most of America's recent wars, is brought up in only a few places. A few pages are devoted to it in connection with the Arab Oil Embargo, without much explanation of the background - why the Arabs and Israel were fighting. There is no real discussion of the question of Palestine, the deep injustice most people in the Arab world feel about that issue, and the role of the US in creating and perpetuating that injustice. The US role in the failed Peace Process of the 1990s is completely absent. The book talks about the two Iraq wars, again without much background as to the whys. There is no mention of how, throughout the 1990s, Dick Cheney and others in the subsequent Bush administration were lobbying Clinton for an Iraq War. There is no mention of the Caspian Oil pipeline, again a desire since the 1990s and one of the major reasons for a war in Afghanistan.Finally, the book is more or less a "names and dates" book. Too many pages are devoted to descriptions of presidents and their campaigns, and too few devoted to describing how ordinary Americans lived. A much better read is Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States", but even that has gaping holes in foreign issues, especially when it relates to the Middle East.

Tomine's comics series Optic Nerve has made him a cartooning icon for the disaffected, 20-something subculture. His work is instantly recognizable—clean-lined, understated, psychologically acute—although his subject matter (young hipsters listening to indie-pop and hitting emotional roadblocks) gets somewhat repetitive in large doses. As its title suggests, the attractively produced Scrapbook collects bits and bobs that didn't make it into Tomine's earlier books: one-page strips about music and heartbreak from Pulse magazine, a few pieces for magazines like Details and Giant Robot, and some pieces abandoned after a page or two (and, in some cases, later reworked). The collection also includes a long sketchbook section, which, Tomine notes, is modeled on similar projects by Robert Crumb and Chris Ware: drawings of people he sees in public, copies of interesting pieces by other artists, casually doodled comic strips without the polished surface of his "finished" work and commentary on his own artistic process. The book's most entertaining section is devoted to Tomine's commercial illustration work: album covers, New Yorker illustrations and a few advertising posters, in which a single, heavily stylized image suggests an entire narrative. Tomine has been drawing his alternative-comics magazine Optic Nerve for more than a decade but, since he began publishing at 16, still has the aura of a young turk about him. Yet here is this "odds and sods" compilation of that veteran's staple, uncollected work. First up are some 40 brief early strips, chronologically presented to verify Tomine's impressive development as illustrator and storyteller. Like his later work, most of the early stuff sympathetically depicts the alienation and loneliness of Tomine's twentysomething compatriots, but in vignettes rather than short stories; the best are minor masterpieces of concision. The book's second section documents Tomine's successful sideline as a commercial artist, gathering illustrations for the New Yorker and other publications, album covers, movie posters, and other jobs. The third section, devoted to Tomine's sketchbooks, constitutes something of a revelation. The relaxed roughness of these drawings makes one wish he would inject some of their attractive looseness into his sometimes suffocatingly stiff comics work. Dedicated Tomine fans will likely enjoy this collection of early work, commercial work, and sketches

"Scrapbook" is just that, a mix of comic strips, commercial artwork, and sketches from his notebooks. Some of the comic strips remind me of the 32 Stories book where Tomine's early 90s work is scratchy and largely amateurish compared to his standards today. That said they show a master of the medium learning the ropes, seeing what works and what doesn't. The stories vary from 6 panel short stories to 24 panels. One of them shows a couple breaking up in parallel to their favourite band "Crabwalk" breaking up. Later on, Tomine redoes the same strip, almost panel for panel, except with the knowledge that it is now based on a real life relationship of his and he changes the band to the Pixies who had broken up at that time. It's interesting as it shows the confidence Tomine's gotten in the 2nd strip to the 1st, and also because I like the Pixies.The design work is wonderful, ranging from CD album artwork for bands like Weezer and Eels (his drawing of E is magnificent), to adverts for Coca-Cola, posters for local events, promos for Drawn & Quarterly. It all shows Tomine's range and some are so good I wish I had them as posters to put up. The sketches too are excellent and show how a comics artist creates his strips in utero. Very cool stuff.Fascinating book, great artwork, just don't expect a graphic novel like "Shortcomings" and think more along the lines of "32 Stories" with extras. Good stuff.

This book can serve as either an introduction to Tomine's work or to fill in the gaps for his dedicated readers, of which I am the latter. From the perspective of examining his art work, as an artist myself who has admired and sometimes felt intimidated by his hyper-clean drawing drawing and coloring style, and his achingly perfect depictions of young women, it was very compelling to see how much experimentation he did with heavy inking styles and harsh figures before somehow making the leap in a year or two long period to his current style. It's also revealed that indeed he does copy from fashion catalogues as well as drawing from life, though his work from nude models is less masterful. Finally, a collection of published illustrations from various major magazines and record companies cement his reputation as one of the most striking, poignant and relevent cartoonists of his time. I would have given this book five stars were it not for the fact that it simply does not contain any of the comic work of his that is truly wonderful, and of course this is because all of those pieces have already been collected elsewhere.

I should say up front that I am very biased in favor of Tomine; he is one of my favorite modern comic artists, and in my opinion one of the very best. But when I saw the title "Scrapbook," I was hesitant; I usually avoid such books from even some of my absolute favorite artists, because most consists of drawings and art only - there is typically very little to "read," if that makes sense - without getting a long rant about the various functions of comics. However, I was pleasantly suprised to find that this contains a lot of work with text; it is a book you can "read" just as much as you "look," and it just goes to show how artists like Tomine are revolutionizing terms like "comics," "literature," and even "text." It shows that he isn't just an artist that employs text, nor a writer who can draw - he is a comic artist, meaning he creates moments, stories, and ideas into the one comic medium, which consists of both text and art. If you have never read his title Optic Nerve, get that first (collected under the titles Sleepwalk And Other Stories, and Summer Blonde); however, if you've already read those and are hungry for more while anxiously awaiting the next issue of Optic Nerve (which is usually a year or more between issues), then it will be worth it, I promise.

I've been an avid reader of Adrian's stuff for years and purchased this collection a few weeks ago. It is quite interesting to see how his artwork/storylines have changed over the tears, as well as see some items that I've never even heard of (album cover and magazine pieces, for example). I think the 32 stories collection is better if you wanted an intro collection, but I think this is quite worthwhile.Adrian is one of the best, most poignant if that is the best word, storyteller and artists around today.

This narrative, winner of the first (1990) Barbara Savage/ Miles from Nowhere Memorial Award for adventure travel writing, tells of a 1987 trip around the Himalayas by truck, mountain bike, local bus, and foot. Accompanied by their wives, Schmidt, a journalist, and Morrow, a photographer, set out to circumnavigate the Himalayas. Their journey began in Lhasa and should have ended there, but like a similar attempt (Ned Gillette and Jan Reynolds's Everest Grand Circle , LJ 11/1/85), political events terminated the quest in Sikkim. Schmidt is particularly good describing landscapes and the natives of Tibet and Nepal. He is somewhat less sympathetic and colorful in describing Indian and Pakistan portions of an off-the-beaten-path journey and reveals almost nothing about the four travelers themselves. Jeremy Schmidt took an adventure tour of the valleys and towns and the mountains of the Himilayan massif, and wrote a great book about it. The accompaning photos are quite nice too. I had the good fortune of hiking through Nepal back in the '90. This book brought back my memories of that great experience. Highly Recommended.

I'm in a 200 hr. yoga teacher training and realized I needed a lot more knowledge about anatomy since I basically had (almost) NONE. Reviews of Kaminoff's "Yoga Anatomy" got great reviews for those who had a basic working knowledge of anatomy already. For those of us who didn't, many people recommended Ray Long's 2 books, "The Key Muscles of Yoga" and "The Key Poses of Yoga". So, that's where I started. Dr. Long's books are fantastic! Big color-coded pictures with limited (manageable) text. I started w/ "The Key Muscles of Yoga" as recommended; that gave me a basic working knowledge of the muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons, joints and their actions, insertion/origin, synergists, antagonists. Then I moved on to his next book, "The Key Poses of Yoga" which is fabulous! Again - lots of detailed pictures with bulleted info about muscles in the legs, pelvis, arms, back, shoulders that are or should be engaged in the pose to make it a safe and effective pose. This info will be really helpful when teaching the "what & why" anatomical details of a pose. His chapters are organized around backbends, forward bends, twists, hip openers and the like. I highly recommend both of his books. After this, I think I'll be ready for the more in-depth detail in Kaminoff's book, "Yoga Anatomy". Already though, I feel like I have a enough basic information to teach poses safely. I know there's a lot more to learn in this regard, but hey, I gotta start somewhere!

Key poses is what you need to start. In my yoga class the teacher doesn't have the time to stay there and show you exactly what to do unless you are taking a private class. This books shows your the key/basic poses, the names of the poses and the muscle groups affected. At least when you hear the names in class you can try to do them without trying to look at everyone else.

An AMAZING book that has truly made me appreciate yoga and why we do the positions. Beautifully written with detailed anatomical illustrations that don't make you feel overwhelmed. But having a Masters degree in physiology I can truly appreciate the details of this book. Should be mandatory reading for any instructor teaching yoga but is a great supplement to those of us who are simply interested in WHY YOGA WORKS. I've bought all of Ray Long's Yoga books and reference them constantly as I continue to learn.

This is THE BEST YOGA BOOK, IIIF you know anatomy. As a massage therapist i freeking loved this book, it has cue to flex specific muscles that the common person will have to look up before knowing, but thats good too because everyone should learn what is inside all of us!

Excellent book. Highly recommend the physical book. But the tablet download needs updates. On the kindle version several of the diagrams (not all, but several), you can not read the letters on the diagrams because they are too small. When you increase the diagram size, the letters become blurry. I wish they would fix that.

I rated this 5 stars because a picture is worth a thousand words! This book shows ligaments & tendons &how they attach to other body areas. This book accurately explains why to so many questions!

This book is fantastic! Have both Vol I & II, and they are invaluable for anyone wanting to learn about yoga, being healthier, or any nursing or med, or physical therapy student.The book shows which muscles are involved in each yoga move - the ones working, being stretched, or supporting the body weight. For anyone in medicine, this also breaks down movements into steps and illustrates why the patient is in pain with that movement. For anyone in physical therapy, is illustrates why you need to do that excerise & shows how it will help you.As a student in a yoga teacher training class, this helps me learn how to do the poses correctly and which muscles are working with each pose and how to avoid stressing injuried body parts. Fantastic reading and a great resource!

This follow-up volume is even better than the first one, because it gets into the fun of things from the get go. The first gives the structure, this gives you wings!Both books are in my top shelf and are never gonna come down. If it were smaller, or if i could find a kindle version of it, i'd be carrying it every time i leave on a trip.Visualizing ALL that this book offers is worth to me infinitely more than its market price. Add to that a brilliant, clear explanation.. it doesn't get better than this.

I have been using HPIM as my reference book since the 15th edition. Overall it's a great book and they are getting better all the time by adding tables, charts and color that helps remembering stuff. However this new edition has some major drawbacks:1. While it seems like a good idea to make a small problems-based volume and a larger diseases-based volume, this is just not practical. Not only the larger volume is heavy and difficult to move around the desk, it is also difficult to read since pages curve very deep into binding due to the volume size.2. I am not sure how authors decided which chapters will be available only on the disk. For example, one of my favorite chapters about transfusion therapy has disappeared from the book and exists only on the disk. I find this ridiculous - every hospital-based physician deals with transfusions all the time. It is much more important for vast majority of internists to know how to manage transfusions and their complications than to be experts in Tularemia, Relapsing Polychondritis or MEN - and these chapters made it to the paper! Other examples of important chapters that can be found only on the disk are Bone Cancer, Antiviral therapy, Poisoning and drug overdose etc. etc. etc.

I am a surgeon on the alimentary tract including liver, biliary system and pancreas, so I have to be informed of the many surgical and non surgical diseases of this organs, and this book along with other books in this field is a very important source of actual information about diseases of the alimentary tract surgery. It is a book that you need to have in order to be quite informed and to keep it close to you if you wish to be a very competent profesional in every field of internal medicine.

Did not include the features advertised, such as online access to the eChapters. Also arrived with a "For sale in India only" label on both volumes (I live in US).

I want my 18th edition back!!! Way too many e-chapters and only 10 days of access medicine? What a joke...Who wants to pop in a DVD or go online to get content when you own the physical copy of the book? Horrible. Sticking with Cecil moving forward
