The low grade is for the digital format, not the book. The book is pretty good. Only a couple of minor flaws. When Hirsch discusses the book Mildred Pierce, he assigns it the plot of the movie, which is quite different (there's no murder in the book). When he discusses what kind of director is best fit for noir, he says directors with a generous view of human nature and a painterly view of cinema are a bad match, but he forgets to mention Robert Wise as a serious exception to that rule. Overall his look at the qualities that signify noir, his look at the literary background, and his look at specific components of film production are superb.The digital version is a mess. The first sentence is incoherent. Italics are screwed up throughout. There is no differentiation between font size for text and photo caps, so the flow of a chapter keeps being interrupted. And some photo caps are missing the photos that are supposed to accompany them. Skip the digital (I'm probably going to return mine for a refund).

This is a well researched and well written on a subject of great interest to me - film noir. Mr. Hirsch explains the background of noir, lighting, camera angels, femme fatales, plots and subplots - and all done clearly and well. If you are a convinced student of film noir or you've just been introduced to the genre, I recommend this book highly.

If you like Noir and film it's an essential purchase. Not too heady, and breakdowns of film noir with citation and direct screenshots

A superb and in-depth study, one that is highly informative yet reads like anything but a dry textbook. I recommend that any new fan of film noir delve into this book first before reading others. After this one, see Nicholas Christopher's 'Night and the City.'

Illuminating book on Film Noir. I'm learning a lot in my class. I also recommend The Dark Side of the Screen: Film Noir by Foster Hirsh, which may be a little more readable.Be sure to see the late film noir movie from 1966, Seconds, with Rock Hudson, free on YouTube. Another good movie on YouTube is The Hitch-Hiker, from 1953 - riveting.

The author presents an encyclopedic analysis of the evolution of the genre. This is not a how to that defines what is or is not a noir or how shoot a noir, it's an authoritative collection of a genre through a specific time period that shows the reader what to watch to understand the tapestry of noir better.

She writes about her experiences in a journal she got for her thirteenth birthday just days before she and her family went into hiding. This book has lots of facts about the Frank family and the families that hid out with them. It has rare pictures of the Franks, their friends, and family members. It explains that during World War II when the Nazis invaded Germany there were many rules that the Jewish community had to endure. In 1933 Anne Frank and her family moved to Amsterdam to get away from the Nazis but on August 4, 1944 there was no getting away from them and the Frank family and their friends who were hiding with them were found in a small annex at Otto Frank's (Anne's Father) business. This book is packed with unique pictures images ranging from rare documentary photography and artwork to maps and personal artifacts. My wife and I are native Floridians who have been to st Augustine more times than we can remember. It's our favorite getaway - i even proposed to her at the city gates. Anyway. We know the city pretty well and still found new and interesting information in this book. We just got back from spending Christmas there and saw copies of this book in use several times. We usually go for new years or in January when it's quiet. Christmas there was a fun but crowded party with very few dining options on Christmas day. May not do Christmas again but we go back for the Christmas lights as we have done for some years now.

I started reading this at night in bed and finally put it down at 4:30 am. Not because I was done reading, but because I needed to sleep! And finished the book later in the day. It's not often I stay up all night reading a book, but when I do, it's because it's really good and well written! This is a book about a girl who survives a horribly abusive childhood. But she doesn't just survive, she ends up finding healing, love, and redemption. Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing your story, CeeCee. I am in awe that such beauty can come out of incredible pain.

As hard as it was to learn of CeeCee's painful childhood, it was impossible to stop reading because it was so well written. Read this on my phone from start to finish unable to put it down.I'd definitely love to read more writings from this author.

Children are precious gifts and it seems unfathomable to me that any parent could abuse or neglect them. Since I’ve only known loving, supportive parents, reading Ghost No More enlightened me to the grim realities many abused or neglected children face. Cee Cee sheds light on not only the helplessness of a child but also on the overall dynamics of the cycle of abuse in families.As a reader, I was left feeling in awe about the resilience and strength of this little girl who is forced to face such cruelty and neglect. Although it is sad, I felt driven to keep turning the pages by the author’s ability to draw me into her world through eloquent and honest prose. Her writing is descriptive and engaging and her child’s voice is authentic. I wanted to jump in and take this little girl to a safe and loving home. I can feel the pain of being rejected and discounted by those who are supposed to be our greatest advocates. I can see why she feels invisible , like a ghost.As in any well-written memoir, I am invited into this little girl’s world and taken through to her adulthood where she finds healing and hope through her faith. I care about her and want her to find happiness. The redemptive ending leaves me satisfied as a reader. This is a deeply moving story about hope and the resilience of the human spirit in overcoming incredible odds. Beyond being a satisfying read, this memoir could serve as a resource for anyone who has suffered abuse and is seeking hope and healing. It can also serve as a valuable resource for professionals who serve the abused population.

I'm not usually a memoir reader, but couldn't put this down. Told in an engaging style, it's a story that propels the reader as well as a first-rate novel. But with one big difference. It's true. The honest and unflinching recounting coupled with very good storytelling kept me turning pages. The tale is sometimes dark and heart-rending, but the glimmers of light sprinkled through it bust wide open at the end. I'm glad I read it.

GHOST NO MORE by CeeCee JamesSince this book was written and narrated by CeeCee, beginning with her horrendous childhood, of necessity the early parts of the book use simplistic, age appropriate language. However, because of this simplicity, the reader may decide not to go forward with it. This would be a big mistake because as CeeCee gradually matures, so does her language. No easy feat for an author!!Ms. James slowly builds tension, so that it reaches a point in which putting the book down is no longer an option. You feel that you must discover what happens to the characters, particularly CeeCee.Throughout her life, this poor child had been unloved, criticized, and emotionally and physically abused by her sadistic mother. Also, she was sexually abused by a close family member. You will experience every conceivable emotion, running the gamut of gut-wrenching pity for the child to intense hatred for her sadistic mother, her lecherous relative, and others who emotionally diminished CeeCee’s self-confidence and damaged her psyche.This book is the first of a series of three, but it also serves well as a stand alone book.Accolades to you, Ms. James for being the strong woman you are and for sharing your life with strangers. This magnificent memoir may well bring hope to other abused children.Phyllis Eisenstadt

This memoir was so heartbreaking but beautifully written, and the positivity that CeeCee carried throughout all of her experiences was amazing. The ending is great :)

CeeCee memoir is unforgettable. You wont forget this memoir of a child who struggled with so much pain and negligence. She would restrict her food and take away her meager meals for such transgressions as a perceived eyeroll or tone of voice. During "good" days, CeeCee was banished to a tiny room in the basement, and only to sleep or do homework. She was expected to spend long hours, even in below zero weather, outdoors and away from her mother's and stepfather's sight.As if that weren't horrific enough, CeeCee endured abuse of a different kind at the hands of her maternal grandfather.Yet unbelievably, CeeCee continued hoping she might win her mother's love - an impossible task.James details her young self's childhood in a way that is both heartbreaking yet leaves readers unable to stop hoping this vulnerable child who has endured so much will finally find the happiness and security she deserves.

I love how they intertwine the principles they want to share into story form giving you examples of those principles in action without any fluff or unnecessary words.I’m not going to disclose the 5 secrets here. If you want to “hear” them, you’ll need to meet Gillian and Jackson. I will tell you that it’s a book well worth your time.As for me, I’ve used some of the secrets without realizing it and now because of this book, I plan on being more intentional so that I can do my part to making the world a better place for others.
