This is a nice little useable spiral bound book. However, is it possible for SOMEONE to write a book for experienced spinners that does not go into all the types of wheels/spindles and all their parts, all the different categories of fiber and where it is from, etc. Just the how's and what's of spinning.... drawing, twist, grist, plying. This book is nice that it does have some of those things, but it wastes so much space and weight with what is already known about wheels and fiber categories. It would be nice to have a handy reminder of spinning specifics with just spinning ... not history, or another fiber origin discussion.

I do not spin, weave, knit or sew, but my wife does. I bought her this book as a Christmas gift. It now sits on top of a basket full of wool, within easy reach of the spinning wheel. I know she has used the book a number of times and has found it helpful. From what I've seen, it is a compilation of the many books that she owns. From an observers stand point, I would say it was well worth the money.It saves her time; time that would be used hunting through 10 different books to find an answer to a simple question or a solution to a problem.

For a tough subject that goes deep into the working of life the writer does a good job of trying to make it understandable to the layman. Found it very interesting and thought provoking.

Impressive revelation of God's handiwork in creation of our basic building block. I was taught in school that cells were simple organisms. Boy were they wrong!

When Darwin contructed his theory of evolution by random mutations and subsequent "survival of the fittest", which included the emergence of new body forms which led to new species, genera, etc.up to even new phyla, he and his followers where under the impression that the cells in an individual of each species were very simple, consisting of a cell wall which enclosed a "glob" of undifferentiated protoplasm in which floated the cell's nucleus in which the material that controlled reproduction and inhertitable characteristics (called 'genes') resided. Reproduction of a cell was a simple process in which first each of the genes divided in two and then the cell (by reason of some unknown signal) split into two cells, each with its own portion of the genes.The author of this text leads the reader through a precise, detailed description of actually how incredibly complex an indiviual cell really is, and how that complexity, both in the multitude of diverse components that a cell contains, and the exacting diverse functions that these individual components each must perform on schedule for the cell to remain alive, makes Darwin's premise about a cells ability to mutate and thereby create new cells with new functions incredibly naive, and, more importantly, extremely improbable.Rama carefully documents the detailed descriptive journey through the cell with a continuous stream of references to supporting citations for published studies by a host of international research scientists working in the relevant fields of cellular biology, physics, and chemistry, including those engaged in the evolutionary aspects of those sciences. As one makes one's way through the material, it soon becomes very apparent that Darwin's theories about how evolution proceded are far from universally accepted in the scientific community. And as modern research has increasingly revealed the complexities of the cell, it is also apparent that science has yet to satisfactorily explain how life itself first came into existence, and how new species and new body forms (genera, families, orders, classes, phyla) arose in the relatively short time (geologically) that life has existed.on earth.One aspect of the book will undoubtedly blind those who have an unalterable (and, perhaps, irrational) personal bias against any hint that something other than scientific materialism (as it defines itself) may be involved in the formation and function of the universe. That is the author's stated belief that a Supreme Being is the only rational explanation for how the complexities of all living matter, from the simplest one celled organism to humans, that science has now uncovered have been able to come into existence and survive. To denigrate the author and reject the unarguable validity of the contents of the book detailing the complexities of living cells, complexities that science itself has revealed, and which raise real questions about their origin, because of the author's personal beliefs, would be the mark of a very small mind, indeed.

I read an article in the newspaper about the author, Mr. Graubart. I purchased a copy of the book for myself, as I am always seeking for new insight on the internal journey that drives external results. I have a family member in recovery so I'm familiar with 12 step programs, and I admire them deeply. However, as Mr. Graubart acknowledges, it can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you are like me and worried about "doing things right." Not only is my copy filled with bent pages highlighting my favorite bits (and maybe I even want to blog about how to apply them to any challenge) but I've now purchased two other copies to give away. A great example of how mighty things can come in small packages. It will inform you but not preach, show you, not tell you. Definitely worth it, and tiny precious treasure.

This book and others in the series make a great index for improvisation. I noticed that some people in the comments section squaked about a lack of examples in these books (only 100) or the simplicity of the examples. I'm not the greatest of musicians and I only play musical instruments and percussion for my own amusement, but let me recommend something anyway. This applies to any music book you may buy. Choose an excercise for the day. In a 15 to 30 minute session, how many variations can you come up with just improvising? In how many time signatures can you make these variations work? Rock, blues, country, eastern style scales? Record yourself and harmonize or solo over the music you laid down. Think up more ideas like these (I'd like to hear them at this post). And always record your improvising. Sometimes you amaze yourself when you listen the next day and have to figure out what you did the night before. Remember, this is supposed to be fun. Later.

I am an intermediate player, who was looking for something to help expand my music vocabulary. I was choosing between this one and a couple of other books with rock licks, and one thing that drew me to this one was the fact that it had a lot more pages than the other two I was looking at. Well, the dumba** I was, I didn't bother to check the book dimenstions (since most all music books are similar in size), so when the book came I was a little dissapointed, but hey.This book is not for an advanced player, and if you think you are intermediate, you might find some of it boring. The material is actually pretty basic, but still covers a big span of styles, so you will expand your vocabulary some. Actually I used to teach beginners, and I think this book is an awesome teaching tool, once a person gets past the basics. It explains the CAGED system, which is a very valuable tool in mastering the fretboard, and gives some explanation on the licks, rather than just listing them. I was hoping for a little more in-depth coverage of the individual styles, but not too much there, only a few basic ones for every player/style. Oh, and there is only one lick/riff spread over two pages, there is a lot more in pictures and background info.The backup CD is great, so no complaints there. I give it a generous 4, just because I have fun going through it, but it's not something that will help you become a solid soloist, it will just give you a good overview of most rock styles up to the '90s.

I have both the blues and the rock versions of this loose ringbinder book and love them both.What they do that others fall short on is:First, they are small and open up and sit flat so you cansee what the F you are looking at; try that with the other books!Second, they are Riff books only, but give you a very good feel forthe song/songs (Like green onions) that they come from.Third, the accompanying CD is very easy to understand and locatethe Riff portion you are looking for as long as your CD player hasa digital read out (which most do).I would recommend both of these books for anyone just getting into playing, orsomeone that just wants to research different styles of playing without spendingthe next 6 months on one subject.

It was a gift and I have not seen it, therefore a less than 5 star rating.

Not for beginners.

Lots of fun licks. It's always nice to add something to your playing and this book will give you a lot of quick lessons to improve and expand you playing without a huge time commitment. The binding is done so that the book lays flat and that helps when you want to have it open on a music stand. Well done.
