Ah this is classic Kearsley! I think she is at her best when she weaves a good romance into the core of her stories. I just finished Named of the Dragon and as soon as the romance picked up in this book I realized that's what had been lacking in NotD: a fully developed love story.In this story, the famed Ninth Roman Legion thought to have been lost in Scotland is the center of the story. There are ghosts who quite appropriately speak only Latin, people with "the second sight," tough as nails Scottish lasses (young and old), and men in kilts. I found some of the ending to be a little odd but overall I completely enjoyed this book.When you cozy up with Kearsley, you know you're getting a historical mystery set in a place that she describes in such loving detail as to make you want to go there immediately (is there a Kearsley tour of the UK out there? I would do that in a heartbeat). There may be ghosts, time travel, paranormal happenings, curses, or all of the above. And there will most likely be an adorable romance happening in it (warning: may also contain tragic romance but that's usually the one set in the past). There is nothing like a Kearsley novel to keep you totally engrossed and make you smile.

I love her writing, I never get tired of her books and look forward to reading each new one. This story was hinted at in a previous novel and proved to be just as intriguing as it sounded. Although it didn't have the flashbacks to and from previous centuries, it did have the ghosts! Sometimes suggestion is far more powerful than full description. One's imagination fills in the blanks and fleshes out the characters. The image of the dog greeting an invisible being was so well done, I could see it in my mind! The great bonus is that her books are so well researched that I learn from every novel of hers that I read - rather like a history lesson without the pain. I know more about historical digs that I did before and appreciate the respect and care with which history is preserved. Thank you for all you write and the enjoyment that I receive from reading it!

I love me a good time-slip novel, and Susanna Kearsley writes some of the best. This one involves an archeological dig of a site that may have belonged to the lost IX legion. Since no one has any idea where the IX Legion served, southern Scotland is as likely as anywhere. This particular site is a private dig, paid for by a wealthy man. His grandson sees and hears things that may be Latin, and an individual he calls the Sentinel.This is the framework for this romance between a female archeologist and a local man, and seeing how they work it all out is part of the fun of a Kearsley novel.

This is my favorite Susanna Kearsley novel so far. I have only read The Winter Sea and The Rose Garden and I really liked both of them but this is my favorite to date. All three novels have a bit of a otherworldly or paranormal slant to them, The Winter Sea and The Rose Garden are a little far fetched but it doesn't detract from the enjoyment of those stories. The Shadowy Horses has ghosts and psychics which is still far fetched (depending on your beliefs) but more believable. I wouldn't say this is an out right romance, it has more substance than that (again not knocking romance novels, I love them too) but it is a mystery with romantic overtures. The romance isn't just between the main characters (Verity and David) but one's passion for their profession, family, town, history and much more. I fell in love with all the characters and the little town in Scotland. I learned a little bit about the Roman occupation of Britain.The only thing that confused me a little about this novel was it seemed to have been written in the late 90's or early 2000's. No one seemed to have cell phones, they did a lot of work cataloging by hand not computer.I really enjoyed this book. Kearsley always does such a great job introducing historical periods into her contemporary books. I can't wait to read another of her books.

I absolutely love Susanna's books; her characters are easy to like, the story is interesting and the plot always has some kind of twist. The Shadowy Horses is no exception to the rule. The story pulled me in right from the beginning. There was enough interest to make me want to keep reading and the romantic portion, even though very mild, was enough to keep my imagination working.One of the things I like about Susanna's writing is how she explains what she needs but lets the rest up to the readers imagination. Take for instance the tension leading up to the romantic scene; but not really a romantic scene. There wasn't detail or anything but left me wondering and allowed my imagination to fill in the blanks.This story is a bit different from most of her other books since there isn't an actual time travel episode. Instead, there are flashbacks in a way (I don't want to give too much away).The end of the story is always a bit of a disappointment for me. I'm not disappointed with the story line but I always feel like I'm saying 'good-bye' to some good friends; and again, there is always story left over so the reader can fill in the blanks.I'm anxiously waiting for the next book from Susanna and have to admit I haven't been reading her books in succession. The first book I read was Winter Sea and have enjoyed all of the books since. Keep up the fantastic writing!

About the Author

Azby Brown, a native of New Orleans, Louisiana is the director of KIT Future Design Institute in Tokyo. He studied architecture and sculpture at Yale College, graduating in 1980, and entered the Department of Architecture of the University of Tokyo in 1985 under a grant from the Japanese Ministry of Education. He received his master's degree in 1988 and completed his Ph.D. research in 1995. He is the author of The Genius of Japanese Carpentry (1995), Small Spaces (1996), The Japanese Dream House (2001), and The Very Small Home (2005), all published by Kodansha International. He became an associate professor of architectural design at the Kanazawa Institute of Technology in 1995 and currently holds a position there in the Department of Media Informatics.

The book is great! it is formatted as a collection of three stories with a concise analysis and explaination of how facets of Edo period life can be applied to improving modern life and fighting climate change. The stories make the majority of the book and are fairly easy to read. I appreciate the diagrams and illustrations provided in the book, for they improve the readability of the book.

Very practical information, but I am unable to apply much of it as I am retired and live at a location that has it's own grounds keepers.

A deep dive into the architecture, agriculture, sociology and soul of rural & urban Japan in the 18th century, just before the irruption of the "modern" times. Spiritually and technically inspiring for rethinking modern homes and life styles. An excellent surprise, congratulations to the author for this careful and thorough work.

I give this book five stars because of the way he explains the living conditions of Edo Japan in story like format brings the reader into the world of Japanese culture during this period of time. I thought it was great how he explains everything in such detail that you can imagine the places he takes you to. I liked how he summed up at the end and explained the ways we can use the knowledge in the book in the environment that each of us now live.

Well written and interesting. Food for thought, about how we use our resources from the domestic to the urban scales.

I am about 1/4 of the way through this book on my kindle. The book itself is wonderful, but I was very disappointed in the quality of illustrations in the kindle edition. The paper version of the book is beautifully laid out and illustrated, but little care was taken with the kindle transition. I would recommend not purchasing the kindle edition unless it gets updated with higher quality images.

there are many great photos and locations to visit in this book, but the way it's laid out is difficult to follow. it's divided by longitude, which is unique, but within those divisions, there is no flow to the destinations. it would be very difficult to find all the information about a single country, it's just strewn throughout the book.

The book's content is okay- brief snippets of information about various sites around the world. The images in the book are a bit disappointing, there is not vibrancy in the photos. The book was also purchased as a gift and came (either due to pre- or post- shipping handling) with bent edges- I was hesitant to gift it because it looked used.

Could be the best gift ever! My boys love this book, trips to take are all over the world and are arranged by order of their GPS location as well as desired effect of trip whether it be educational, fun, romantic, etc.! Stunning photography too makes it a pleasure to leaf through as well as display for your guests.

Got this for my dad as a birthday gift, he loves it and is actually changing some of his travel plans to do some of the unique things written about in the book. I also enjoyed looking through the content, it’s nicely laid out and easy to skim through based on area.

Nice destinations are listed. But the way the destinations are organized is not practical for a regular traveller. They are arranged by longitudes which makes it really confusing if you want to explore a particular region you want to travel.

I ordered this after I glanced though this book in the store, selling for quite a bit more money, and immediately wanted to keep reading. There are so many creative ideas that your "bucket list" will become full very quickly. As you read, the ideas start at the most northern part of the world and work down to the most southern. The ideas are typically a few quick sentances which makes it very fast to read.

This is a great book to give individuals getting ready to retire or graduate college. Beautiful pictures.

If you hate yourself and want to suffer, this is the textbook for you. It is rich in details and pictures though.

Great book, but the MindTap app is not included though the product description and extensive publisher promotional materials on the page seem to indicate that it is. Buy elsewhere and be sure you are getting the app, as many of the photos in this book are reduced to the point of uselessness and you'll need the app to see them.

This was supposed to have an access code with it so I could access MindTap as well. It did not come with it. Don't be fooled by all that you read in the discription. I thought it was a complete set, especially for the price I paid. I started my class yesterday and I am disappointed with this purchase.

This book was required for my Survey of Art History class. I did enjoy the reading though. It was an easy read given the fact that it was in textbook form. The author does an excellent of keeping you interested throughout each chapter.

The book was helpful. No pages missing and all context was accounted for. It did have a stell cigarette odor when i first received it but other than that the book was fine.

Worked well for my wife's art class.
