It was difficult, but it gave me a strong understanding of my origins and identity. It challenges me to work hard because I belong to a generation representing my ancestors and persons unborn. This book encourages me to leave good footprints in the sands of time.

About the Author

James Hull Miller, a graduate of Princeton, combined an academic background in literature and philosophy with many years of actual theatre experience, twelve of which were spent in teaching. From 1958 until his death in 2007, he was a freelance designer and consultant. His field of special interest was the development of a new stagecraft for the theatre which took the form of freestanding scenery. He designed numerous open-stage theaters based on this system of stagecraft for colleges, communities, student unions, schools and churches. For many years he maintained a scenic studio, the Arts Lab, in Shreveport, Louisiana, where he gave workshops as well as constructed sets for use in a variety of spaces.Mr. Miller was a Charter Member of the U.S. Institute for Theatre Technology and in 1978 was named a Fellow of the Institute. He was also a Founding Member of the American Society of Theatre Consultants.

This is written for set people assuming you know how to build everything and rig everything. This has a couple of good tips for 2 sided sets, but that is about it. It does not tell you how to build a practical set that you can fold up and put on a truck or in a van. THe information on bracing and hardware is minimal. The emphasis is very much on 2 dimensional flying flats, not shed or house units, or even booths or trade show exhibits. Meh.

he wrote several books on self-supporting scenery, set building and set lighting all on a shoe string budget. The books are older but the concepts are still valid ... you may find the lighting stuff of questionable value unless you, like me, find real theater lights and LED technology outside your budget. BTW all the books are very similar and even use the same drawings in many cases.

This guide included some very helpful material - I stage direct for a small college w/ a small budget and this book was extremely useful. I especially enjoyed the the set design for The Barber of Seville. From prompting ideas for small yet effective and efficient set designs to actual detailed structural integrity guidance, this book is a treasure for any performing arts organization. --Glay Marie Posch, Hou., TX

Very nifty little book!

I gave this book to our set builder in our community theatre group. He says it is full of good ideas and will be a big help on our next plays.

Great book for beginners.

I purchased this book to add to my collection and found that it contained less information than one might find in a basic stagecraft book found at any college bookstore. It is my opinion that some of the staging ideas though sound if done properly could be hazardous otherwise. I suggest that if you are not experienced in stagecraft to purchase this book along with a companion stagecraft book and pull from both sources to design and build your show. There are some good suggestions for easy to move lightweight pageant grade sets and this source should not be overlooked. I simply sugest that you not use this as your only reference. To the experienced builder - skip this text all together the designs in the book are old and you most likely will kick your self and say I know how to put plywood platforms on sawhorses why did I buy this!.

I bought this book hoping to learn some new ways to build small touring sets. Unfortunately only the first couple of chapters were really applicable to my situation. Even then, the directions for building were sketchy for non-technical types of people. I guess that the diagrams will make sense to someone who is used to building sets, but I am not and the language used is too technical for me. I did get some nice ideas about using screens and blinds, though.

I have become intensely interested in the disappearances of people going on in the world. The more I read the more weird and sinister it sounds.As for this book, there are some interesting accounts and Ms.Young has some info on accounts of disappearances going on outside the U.S. which is why I was really drawn to this book. However, there it was more of a shotgun approach, listing off happenings without giving a whole lot of details on the individual cases. It also devolved into a laundry list of culprits. While I appreciate the theories, it was just an overview of possibilities that have been tossed out there on the net, and I would have preferred at least some pros and cons to why each theory would or would not fit the bill.I won't compare Ms. Young's books to others taking on this topic, but the feel is more of a campfire story book than an actual investigative approach. I gave it three stars instead of two because it did have some international accounts (though a couple have been covered in other works). I'm in for the long haul on this subject and I want as much information as I can get to look for answers.

I find this author so frustrating. This book has a lot of very interesting cases that I enjoyed reading, but then it really goes off the rails when it gets into the too-well-tread territory of aliens, conspiracy theories, and satanic rituals. I'd enjoy it a lot more if he'd just stick to the accounts of the missing, and leave off the speculation unless he has something new to add. Everyone who reads paranormal books has read these theories hundreds of times. It is also very badly edited, though it is organized much more logically than the other book of his I read. There's less going around in circles in this book.Basically it's a poor man's Missing 411, with extra added tinfoil hats. But I do enjoy reading about the mysterious disappearances.

Basically the same as Missing 411 books, but with speculation. The writer not only tells the missing cases, but gives the many possibilities of what could be happening. My only complaint is that it was too short. I enjoyed it, and am going to get more books by this author.

Whenever Young writes a new book, I am there! You would think the tales would be repetitive, but they're not. I am fascinated by missing people. Where are they? What happened? I know these are questions the families are still asking. Everyone wants closure, but that's not always going to happen in the world of non-fiction.

Very quick read. Makes me want to never go in the woods alone again! Gives examples of unsolved missing person cases and the possibilities that something other than another human is out there involved in their mysterious disappearances. Explains several different theories on what could possibly be out there with evidence and clues to back them up. Makes one realize we may not be alone!

The stories were fascinating. However, the storytelling unsteady and written at a fourth grade level. There were multiple copy editing errors that muddled the facts in many stories. IMO this is a good starting point for a mystery data base to work from when investigating mysterious disappearances.

Not great. Too many far out theories. Tiny bits about cases, lots of writing about far out theories. I think they touched on just about every criptid you can imagine.

Well the book STARTS off with some interesting as well as unexplained disappearanceof people from all walks of life and some very peculiar circumstances concerning their disappearance,it does fall flat with regard to missing people in remote places especially the "woods". As a resident of the Adirondack Park to which the author makes note of some 300 or so people going missing or are injured in this park each year is neither a mystery or of note for this book.....just filler I would think. As with many state and national parks,there topography is usually of the rugged wild dense and difficult sort making these areas prone to the lost hiker.

Unfortunately, virtually none of the physical/hard copy maps and atlases are nearly as good or detailed as they once were. I guess the attitude is, "well, everyone has a GPS, so why bother?" The answer to that is because phones/GPS's are notoriously unreliable--and if you're on a long road trip, particularly in rural and/or mountainous areas were cell/satellite reception is nonexistent, you'd *better* have a means of knowing were the heck you are or you could find yourself in some serious trouble. I can attest to that, first hand. This summer I went on a road trip through the Rockies. I was not familiar with the area. There was no GPS reception. I was absolutely grateful to have this atlas sitting on the front seat to help me navigate the old fashioned way. And as modern road atlases go, this one is actually pretty decent. It's well detailed as far as "back roads," state and national parks, historical sites, etc. That's also the kind of detail your cell phone is pretty impotent in providing. Google maps (when it's working) will zoom you right past anything you might actually want to stop and look at, because it's only interested in getting you from Point A to Point B and doesn't care about anything in between (let alone letting you choose your own more scenic route--or in some cases, more practical route).But the nice thing about having *both* is that you can sit down with the physical atlas and plan your own route and your own stops--and then program your GPS (when it's working) to follow the route *you* choose and alert you that your turn is coming up on the left--don't miss it. So that's my advise for smart travel in the 21st century: Learn to read a physical map (they don't teach that anymore) and use it *with* your GPS as mutual supplements to one another. In that regard, this atlas isn't bad.One final plead to Rand McNally, et al.... I know it's becoming a difficult to continue publishing these atlases when you're in competition with cell phones, but please, please, please don't stop. They are still needed!

I have purchased newer versions of the Rand McNally Road Atlas every ten or so years for several decades. This latest one is The BEST, because of the Larger Print and Spiral Binding.IGNORE the Complainers who gave only ONE or TWO Star ratings because they don't like the fact that most of the States have been split into two or more pages. It's a No-Brainer -- if you want each State to fill only ONE Page AND have Larger Print, you'd end up with an atlas that's THREE feet high and TWO feet wide. So if they don't like it, they can buy the Older Style and a Magnifying Glass.Why Only FOUR Stars ? -- Because unlike previous versions, there are NO maps of CANADA. The older versions had a page or two for each Canadian Province and a page for Mexico. This version is USA ONLY (fifty States). But if you live in the Sun Belt, you probably don't care.

Huge, big pages! Just what an old school person like me is used too. No more squeezing my fingers on a phone screen to get a bigger view! I f you are going on extended road trips in the USA, then don't leave home w/o it! My father absolutely loves this road atlas! He was using last year's with a magnifying glass. There is definitely not a need for a magnifying glass with this atlas. Great publication!

My husband and I are retired and like to take "day trips" and we keep an road atlas in the car because most of the time when we start out we have no idea were we may end up . This Road Atlas is big enough to see with out being bulky and it is up to date on the roads and very helpful.

Even with Garmin I still like to use a paper map...my old Rand McNally was about 15 years old! Ordered this large scale version for more detail - which is great BUT the sheer size, weight, and the laminated cover make it sort of difficult to handle in a vehicle. Sitting in a car it's almost impossible to have it rest in my lap, not to mention trying to pull it up off the floor to get it into my lap! I still give it a 4 Star because of the terrific detail - just wish I'd gone with the original size.

I compared this to the 2015 version I was getting ready to throw away and I'm glad I didn't. The font is smaller yet the book is the same size. There are more pages per state than my old one. And when a road bleeds in to another state there is no key to tell you which page to go to so you have hunt and peck to find state to state information. I would not call this Large Scale as described in the title.

I needed an updated atlas for a trip. Was very excited to update my 10 year old+ map. Was in an area where the GPS doesn't work so well so pulled out the map. What was annoying was the page breaks for the states. They seemed to put the page break in the most inconvenient place on multiple states. Then, some pages were turned and the city zooms would eat up 1/2 the page. I realize that they are getting a tremendous amount of info packed into that atlas but on my old map, I wasn't having to flip pages or turn the map near as much. On old maps they used to put the city zooms on different pages from the state overview. I really like that layout better. The accuracy of the map was excellent, did not have any issues with that part.
