One needn’t be educated in the Greek classics to know that somewhere in this trilogy there is a man who gets intimate with his mom. However, the common conception of Oedipus —as in the Oedipal Complex—probably has more to do with Freud and Freudian psychoanalysis than it does with this story.The three plays of this trilogy are “Oedipus the King” [a.k.a. “Oedipus Rex” or “Oedipus Tyrannus”], “Oedipus at Colonus,” and “Antigone” [pronounced “an-tig-o-nee” rather than “anti-gone.”] Of the three plays, the first is the most well-known.In “Oedipus the King,” the titular character is facing a crisis in his kingdom. When the oracles are consulted about how the calamity might be brought to an end, Oedipus is told that he must banish the killer of his predecessor, i.e. the previous king of Thebes. Oedipus consults his own oracle to find out who the ne’er-do-well is who murdered the last king, and the fortune-teller tells Oedipus that he’ll never say who committed the killing —but acknowledges that he does know who it was. Oedipus mocks and threatens the oracle until the fortune-teller gets fed up and tells the king that it was he, Oedipus, who killed his predecessor. Oedipus doesn’t believe it at first, thinking it’s an attempt to facilitate a coup. Far ickier than the accusation of murder is the fact that —if true— it means that Oedipus has been getting busy with his own mother and has even sired children with her. Oedipus calls for an investigation. When a peasant who saw everything is called to testify, his story strikes Oedipus as disturbingly familiar. It turns out that Oedipus’s blood father (the previous king) had been told by his own oracle that his son would kill him and steal his wife, and so he had baby Oedipus sent away to die. Oedipus (who had been rescued from being staked up on a mountain) was coming through Thebes, not knowing it was his homeland, when he had a skirmish on the road with the man that he didn’t realize was both the king and his father. Later, Oedipus marries the queen (apparently there were no busts or portrait paintings of the last king anywhere) and becomes the king without knowing that the man he’d killed in self-defense was the last king / his father. When the truth revealed, everything goes south. The queen kills herself, and Oedipus’s response is almost as severe. Oedipus gouges out his own eyes and goes into exile. Antigone, one of Oedipus’s daughters, says she will be the ex-king’s guide, and because the old man is blind and not familiar with where he’s going, he doesn’t have much choice but to accept.In “Oedipus at Colonus,” Oedipus and Antigone arrive at neighborhood on the fringes of Athens, i.e. Colonus, and are planning to take up residency. The locals are welcoming until they find out the blind man is Oedipus. The story of the ex-king who killed his father and got it on with his mother has spread far and wide. The townspeople agree to call in their king, Theseus, and let him decide. Theseus decides to shelter the Thebean ex-king, being moved by his story of how Oedipus was unwittingly ruined and how the former king accepted his punishment when his offenses were brought to light. Theseus’s support becomes more complicated when Creon, a royal from Thebes, shows up and says they need Oedipus back because an oracle now says that the location of his burial will determine the outcome of a future conflict. Oedipus says no way, and Creon has Antigone and her sister (who joined them at Colonus to warn Oedipus) kidnapped. Theseus faces a serious challenge because now his actions might bring the city-state to war, let alone offending the gods. However, he sticks to his guns and rescues the daughters and agrees to personally oversee Oedipus’s burial (so that no one can grave-rob and move Oedipus’s body to a position that would create a more pleasing forecast from the oracles.)“Antigone” takes place after the death of Oedipus. The dutiful Antigone is now back in Thebes. When her brother Polyneices is killed and Creon orders that the prince not be buried, Antigone refuses to accept the decree. She steals the body and gives it a proper burial. Antigone was engaged to marry Creon’s son, Haemon, but Creon decrees that the woman will be imprisoned in a cave for disobedience of the king’s order. Haemon asks his father to be reasonable, but Creon will have none of it. Eventually, the words of an oracle convince Creon to change his mind, but he finds himself too late. Like Oedipus, various ruin then befalls Creon.While the details of the story may strain credulity in places, these works are powerful morality tales. The recurring theme is that one can’t make an end-run around fate by way of vice and neither can one otherwise manhandle events to achieve a desirable outcome. Oedipus’s father sends his son to be killed, but the outcome remains the same. Creon can’t plant Oedipus’s corpse where he pleases and neither can he deny a man proper burial. It’s almost a karmic tale. Perhaps, the path to pleasing the gods is through virtue, and not through finagling one’s way to compliance with forecasts.I find it fascinating how crucial a role is played by oracles throughout the three plays—and what that says about human nature. The fortune-tellers are always right and are always heeded. In a sense, this story tells one about humanity’s fear of uncertainty, what people are willing to do to allay that fear, and how the world is ultimately too complex for those attempts to work out. The law of unintended consequences remains ever present.I enjoyed these plays. They are brief, stirring, readable, and thought-provoking. I would recommend them for any reader—particularly those interested in the classics.

There’s a pattern with many of these Greek tragedies. Through the sad tales of cursed families, they illustrate the evolution of Western civilization. Fifth-century Athens was a light in the dark, a young democracy, and the Athenians used tragedy as a tool to preserve history, learn from it, and document their growth. With The Oresteia, we saw Aeschylus tackle the ideas of law and respect for the state, and Sophocles continues along those lines, but places the focus on another great philosophical problem–free will vs. fate.Though heady, the plays also had an entertainment value. The Spring festival celebrating Dionysus provided an opportunity for playwrights such as Sophocles to compete and put on a performance for thousands of spectators. Tragedies usually ran in the morning and the more lighthearted comedies toward the end of the day.Being tragedies, lighthearted these three Theban plays are not. They adhere to the Greek tradition of dramatizing the lives of a cursed family, but instead of the House of Atreus, we gain a jagged view of humanity’s affliction through the House of Oedipus.The first play, Antigone, is actually the last chronologically. Oedipus is dead, yet the curse continues. Thebes has defeated an onslaught of Argosian warriors, led by Polynices, the exiled son of Oedipus. He was killed, along with his brother, Eteocles. Each piece has its own beauty, but we move back in time to that dreadful moment of discovery. It’s through Oedipus’ actions that we see an evolution in Greek theater. The plot builds perfectly according to Aristotle’s Poetics and is the cornerstone of many a modern story. Oedipus represents the everyman, marching forward, thinking destiny is within his control, only to discover that he is a mere puppet to fate.A plague has struck Thebes and the only solution is to bring the killer of Thebes’ last king, Laius, to justice. Through plot twists and turns, Oedipus dedicates himself to finding the killer, only to discover that he is the killer, and that he has fulfilled a prophecy which he has tried to avoid all of his life. The truth is too much. His wife and mother, Jocasta, kills herself, and Oedipus gouges out his eyes, his one act of defiant free will.Finally, we are presented with Oedipus at Colonus. Many years have passed and Oedipus has become a wanderer, guided by the loyal Antigone. He finds himself in the town of Colonus, just outside of Athens. The oracular prophecy makes its next move: Oedipus has arrived in the place where he must be buried. This play is an ode to Athens, and by being buried just outside the city, it will be protected for all time.Thus ends the Theban trilogy. Similar to my Aeschylus readings, I picked up the Robert Fagles translation. Sophocles’ writing flows easier and is less dense than that of Aeschylus, so if you had a tough time with The Oresteia, you may find Sophocles to be more in your wheelhouse. From Freud to soap operas, you’ll certainly begin to understand the many references to this bit of dramatic history.

If you are already familiar with the Oedipus Trilogy, this is a fantastic free digital edition. The formatting is easy to read, the text reads easily. My chief complaint with this copy is that there is no navigable table of contents to easily move from one play to the next. If you are completely new to the Oedipus series, do yourself a favor and read it out loud as you are reading it. It may sound silly, but plays are meant to be heard out loud and not read silently. Anyone having a hard time understanding the language will be greatly aided by the rhythms and sounds of the spoken word. Classical reading. First think, Coerver has never released a bad DVD/VHS/ or book! That being said, you have to be a supporter of the Dutch system and like a lot of offense in your teams game planning. If you play the typical 4-4-2, you will not be impressed. If you want to expand your style, check out this and any Coerver publication.

Excellent pictures and explanations on basics for young soccer players.Very good for coaches to learn to teach the fundamentals of kicking, passing, ball control, etc.

This book is brilliant & wonderful for anyone coaching developing players. Having read lots of coaching materials, Coerver (& the KNVB) was way ahead his time. Everyone is advocating his ideas today, but his writing is still as concise & purposeful as anything I've read. Coerver insists that your primary focus when coaching young players should be to develop their individual technical abilities, & he shows you how to do it in this book. (I think this philosophy also applies to older, lower-level teams - like what I coach) His constant insistence on the development of individual skill, & valuing it over team success, gives direction to my training sessions & game-day decisions/evaluations. He recommends keeping a long-term perspective on individual development & always encourage creativity & risk-taking. He defines the young player coach's role as developing players, not winning games. Your players will make mistakes along the way, & you'll cringe when a defender tries to beat a forward with a double-scissors in your own box & gives up a goal, but it will pay off in the long run. This thinking will change the way you handle your players, it will change the way they approach the game, & they will love you for it! I took over a U-14 team this year that lacked many basic skills, all they did was kick & chase. It was painful at times, & they're by no means stars now, but we changed our daily mentality in training (ex: no criticizing unsuccessful attempts at creativity) & 9 months later every one of them feels comfortable using moves in games & keeping possession. It's amazing to see, & they are having an absolute blast. This book provides the framework, & then some nuts & bolts as well.My favorite parts of the book are the short intros to each section where Coerver outlines his philosophy. Aside from those, the book is very, very heavy on drills. These are a fantastic resource, but is where the book's flaw comes - the descriptions of the drills are very convoluted & the picture sequences are often in a confusing order. Having played a lot of soccer, I can usually figure it out, but inexperienced coaches will be pained. The Coerver videos may be necessary. This is a major flaw, & the reason I don't give the book 5 stars, but not a deal-breaker for me.This book is gold & will stay on my shelf until it falls apart, & then I'll buy a new one. To be honest, when I watch other coaches in my club run a practice session, I think of this book every time & just want to walk up & give them a copy. By the way, this book would be a great companion the USSF E License course. It will serve coaches much better after they leave the class than the USSF book ("How to Play the Game", which is good in its own right) - it has lots more useful stuff for actually planning their practices.

The video is excellent for teaching ball feeling, fast footwork and finally dribbling moves. This will enable the coach to have players who are comfortable on the ball and can play possession soccer. Get the video (5 stars) as the book does not explain or show (despite copious use of color pictures) clearly how to do most of the excercises.

Mr. Coerver may be the best soccer coach in the world. He certainly thinks he is. There is no discernable humility in anything he says.I found that the text had very little connection to the pictures. In most cases, if I wanted to understand what was being discussed, I could look at the pictures or the text, but not both.I rented the video, and it was better than the book, but trying to relate the video items to the book was impossible. It reminded me of the dubbing in "What's up, Tiger Lilly?" in which the dialog continued after the scene changed.

This book is very useful in educating young soccer players. It covers all the basic techniques young players need to develop in order to play the game at a high level. The pictures in the book are very well suited for fine-tuning your technique. If you are not familiar with the technical aspects of soccer the pictures may be a bit hard to interpret. But for coaches already involved in youth training this is a guide which you should have.Major weakness of this book is that it focusses on only one aspect of soccer: technique. Don't expect to find much useful information about tactics (despite of the subtitle of the book). Still it is a 'must have' for youth coaches working with young players.

Well, I thought this should be a good book. It is not. All pictures that look like isolated freeze frames from a movie with zero intelligible explanation. For example, the "double scissors" is illustrated by about 30 pictures of a kid standing around a ball. A thumbnail text accompanies this, explaining nothing. Too bad, but this is a book that is simply incomprehensible. Well intentioned though. Much better books on coaching fundamentals are out there.

This book helped me improve from a kick & run player to a more sophisticated ball player. Unfortunately, I got this a bit late, when I was 30 years old. Now I have mastered the drills and practice them almost daily. When my fitness is OK I can execute these drills in a game situation. I a getting my son to learn these skills, hopefully he will be a better player then me.

In these hearings, a scientist disccuses his experimentation and development of an alternative fuel. The experimentation phase had been kept secret from the government, and basically from anyone outside the top-secret project. The project began at SunRay Farm, which was a few miles away from Woodridge Academy. Most of the students and the residents of the area didn’t know about the farm. They would soon find out though.The “fuzzy mud” is a byproduct of the experimentation taking place in the lab on that farm. The mud is discovered when friends Tamaya and Marshall decide to take a shortcut through the woods on their way home from school. Marshall wants to take this shortcut after being confronted and challenged by class bully Chad. Instead of avoiding him, Chad follows them into the woods. There they encounter each other, and the biohazardous material.Called biolene, it was developed by scientists as an alternative energy source. It sounds promising, though no one seems to know it’s true potential. One of the scientists who spoke at the Senate hearing warned against using the substance, predicting that it could be potentially dangerous. He actually called it “an abomination of nature”. Instead of a clean energy source, he describes it as a high-energy bacteria, a new form of life, a substance that continues to reproduce at a very rapid rate. This makes the substance almost impossible to control.I love this story, once the kids encounter the mud in the woods, it was really hard to put down. It’s a reminder to us, and kids, that there are consequences and potential side effects. I’m sure there are many places like Sun Farm, which makes this story even more believable. I know I’m staying out of the woods!!

Review from a 10-year-old girl: I loved this book! A girl called Tamaya and his walk-home buddy, Marshall, go in the woods one day to avoid the school bully, Chad. In the forest, they encounter the odd-looking fuzzy mud. I loved how there were little additions in the book that helped tell the story. For example, there were secret senate interviews and random powers of two. Throughout the book, each of those add-ons would piece together. The book was also very suspenseful and action-packed; the type of novel I really like. I would recommend this book to people of all ages who are interested in science and are looking for a good book to read.

Fuzzy Mud had just the right amount of character development and suspense to hold the interest of adults and children. The relationships between the characters were believable and current. Switching back and forth between the Senate hearings and the story gave perspective to the serious nature of the story's events.I recommend this book for children in third grade and up, but middle school students will enjoy it.

I like the book, but disappointed in the format via Audible.com.I’ll not insult you by reviewing the advantages and disadvantages of books, and I’ll assume that you are similarly familiar with audio books on CDs, but if you are not familiar with audio books as “.aa” files, then you should read on.Unless you listen on your phone or your iPad (I’m not even sure about other “pads.”), you will likely receive your audio book in one or more 6-hour audio files, perhaps separated by chapters, and amenable to starting at a chapter, but playing all the way to the end.If you wish to listen to a particular chapter, and not go on to the following chapters, you will need to either purchase the audio on CDs or use what I assume to be an illegal procedure to deconstruct the “.aa” files into smaller units, such as an mp3 file for each chapter. Costly and labor intensive even if it were legal.Such limited listening options led me to terminate my brief venture with Audible.com.Incidentally, I confirmed the aforementioned limitation with an Audible.com representative, after which they realized that they had little argument for my continuing my subscription.Otherwise, for many, it appears to be a desirable service.

I was flipping through this book and found that Dr. Ehrman had followed a path similar to my own, attending Moody Bible Institute and later losing his faith in Christianity and God, so I decided to buy the book. I found the book extremely clear and easy to understand, and I was familiar with many of the theological debates about the New Testament textual evidences and about early church heresies and disputes, so nothing in here was particularly shocking to me, though it could certainly have shock value to anyone who thinks they just read the Bible, believe it all, and come up with orthodox evangelical theology.One point that I find particularly persuasive, in terms of the question of whether Jesus himself claimed to be God or the Son of God and equal with God, is his comment, repeated a couple of times, about how different the Gospel of John is. Anyone with a more than passing knowledge of the 4 gospels sees this, and anyone with a study bible knows that the gospel of John was written last, probably at least 60 or 70 years after the death of Jesus.But the key point he makes is that Mark, for instance, never has Jesus say any of the exalted, poetic things that John puts in his mouth. So Ehrman's question is: if, in fact, Jesus went around saying "Before Abraham was, I am," how could Mark have left that out? How could the 3 synoptic gospels have such subtle hints of God-claims, if Jesus actually said the things John attributes to him? To have heard those things from the mouth of Jesus, but just passed them over when writing down the gospels is not imaginable. If I had a hero or leader who taught me a lot of things, and who also claimed frequently to be the son of John D. Rockefeller, it would be pretty strange for me to write a book about him and leave out that last key point, even though it would not technically be false to omit it--but something that would add to the credibility of what he said would be an odd thing to omit.The reason I don't give the book 5 stars is that it is almost over-simplified and repetitive in some ways. I feels to me like lecture notes written up as a book, where each time class meets, the professor starts by reviewing where we were last time. It does make the book very clear, but almost too much so. And sometimes, I just felt tired of the conclusions of biblical textual scholars--this book claims to have been written by Paul, but we don't think it was for reason x, this passage says y, but it was most likely added and so it actually means z, etc. The textual; critics may be right, but it just isn't persuasive to most readers that a letter that says, I, Paul, am writing to you in Colossae," (or wherever) was actually written 100 years after Paul's death. And I recall that a lot of scholarship about the Old Testament doubts the accuracy of OT texts, until the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. So although I am not a believer, I just find some of the scholarly reasoning tedious.The audience that would gain the most from this book are doubters, ie people within Christianity who are feeling uncomfortable with it, wondering if it's true, and want to know more about how we got from the time of Jesus to where we are now. Any study of how we got our bible, how orthodoxy came to be arrived at, how the early church actually functioned, is salient for a person who wants to know whether what they have been taught about the Bible and about Jesus really holds water. If you read this book and then conclude that Jesus was eternally the Son of God who came down from heaven, then you are standing on firmer ground. And if you find that ground shifting under your feet, keep inquiring until you find a satisfactory place to stand.

From a strictly layman's historical view, it is an interesting essay on how a prophet two thousand years ago could come to be declared a "God".BE WARNED...purely historical accounts, and scientific interpretations regarding the origins of the divinity of Jesus Christ, do not mix well with "Faith" and "Religious Belief Systems". This is not a book for those who read the bible as the unchanging word of God. This is an account of how the author sees human interactions, verbal traditions, cultural interactions, and mixed interpretations of the many languages in which the bible was written, and their impact on current belief systems. It's not written in stone, it's not infallible, it's just an interesting insight as to how one author sees how the Jesus story came to be what it is today.

This is a fantastically written book. Ehrman writes in a very accessible and fluid way. He begins each chapter with a personal anecdote that makes the over all narrative more enjoyable and more personal. Ehrman has taken quite the theological journey in his life and this made him into a very through and honest historian. He is first and foremost a historian and you will see how painstakingly he worked to convey only what is known and why and acknowledging when facts are not know. Despite not being a Christian he also deals with the topic of belief and faith in a very respectful way. Ehrman is after the truth, objectively, but is also an honest human being who is attuned to the beliefs and sensibilities of others and presents his facts while being kind to those who do not share his lack of faith. Overall, a great read that informed my view of Jesus immensely, this should be standard reading for anyone who is a believer or seminarian and definitely those interested in Christian history and the theological development of it.

I guess the writer's purpose was to inflict misery on both the characters and the reader. Utterly depressing and more gruesome than anything I have read. I hope I can forget itDon't be drawn in by the mysterious plot and promise of some paranormal encounters. All too soon the blood and gore and graphic accounts of suffering will begin and intensify. So much MISERY.

I liked this book well enough, but wouldn't go out of my way to buy more from this author and I'm glad that I got it for free. It was hard to really sympathize with any character in the book, as they were all greedy or pathetic in one way or another, and apart from being quite wooden, they just weren't very likeable. The author also stretched credibility when one character had his ankle "all busted up," but was able to go hiking after a few minutes, another one donning a backpack and hiking for 20 miles soon after being stabbed in the gut and left for dead, and yet another one with an injured tailbone who was able to take a 20+ mile hike out of the woods, most of it at a dead run.The plot was a good one, though I didn't like how the story kept jumping from the original inhabitants to the modern day - it was distracting, and without good character development, it was hard to remember who the characters were or what the situation was without referring back to an earlier chapter. As another reviewer pointed out, much of the language used by the pioneers was difficult to follow. Not even Webster's dictionary lists the word "shadowgee," though it was used many times in the book without ever being clearly defined.All that notwithstanding, it was entertaining to read and deserving of 3 1/2 stars. Those who enjoy Clive Cussler would enjoy this book, too. I just wish that the author had taken more time to polish his writing and work more on the character development. It's so much more interesting when the reader can really "connect" with the characters. The ending was a bit far-fetched, as well. Still worth a read if you're in the airport and needing some escape fiction that isn't too deep.Please, if you give me a negative vote on this review, leave me a comment and let me know why. The description of the book sucked me in - thinking that the townspeople that suddenly disappeared without a trace on Christmas Eve were either kidnapped by space aliens or were whisked into another sci-fi dimension. I also thought the story might mimic the disappearance of all the early settlers in that east coast community and shed some light on what happened to them. Wrong on all accounts.The way the author kept jumping back and forth between 1893 and 2009 was confusing in parts because I'd forget who that person in the new scene might be since they all seemed to be minor characters - wooden soldiers so to speak. I didn't know if they were good, bad, or what their strengths and weaknesses might be. The mystery is solved when reaching 3/4 of the story and then shifts to a whole new storyline (a quest for gold). That's when the story began to drag in both century storylines.I've never been in the mountains during the winter months and would have thought that moving around in hip deep snow would be quite difficult, and travelling 20 miles or more in a day - even after one character almost destroys an ankle, another had cracked a tailbone, and lastly, a character knifed in the stomach and slowly dying would be impossible and unheard of..I would have thought that the story would have flowed much better had it been written similar to what Clive Cussler does...start out in 1893 and continuing that storyline until the end. Then the second part of the book would follow with the telling of the modern day expedition and the final outcome. Much of the repetition would be eliminated and the deleted space could be used, instead, to fully flesh out the characters, and giving readers a character to like and cheer on, or to hate and hope it's killed off soon.The story held my interest for the most part, but I had to fight to finish the last quarter of the book. The author combined two separate stories into one, hoping to seamlessly blend it all together at the end. It didn't work. His heart seemed to be in the 1893 story, about a Colorado gold mining town on its last legs. He seemed to tell that story very well, with a sense of mining camp authenticity and an array of interesting characters --except for a false trail about threatening Indians that went no where. That, and only that, should have been developed into the complete Abandon story, including its brutal and no-justice ending. By comparison, the 21st century story of greed had a who-cares quality about it. Not much character development. No one was heroic or even empathetic. Too many people wandering inside buildings on the verge of collapse and too many killers with guns inexplicably showing up in the Colorado mountain wilderness during an early season blizzard. By the way, despite the promotional hype, this is not a ghost or horror story. I kept waiting for that to happen but it did not.

The cartoon illustrations of each of these thinkers are highlighted with chatty personal tidbits reminiscent of Kathleen Krull's "Lives of..." books (Harcourt). However, the format is not as successful here. Short captioned illustrations depicting important symbols, occurrences, or people of the time appear as sidebars. A section titled "Philosophy Today" provides a few scant sentences about modern-day thinkers such as Michael Foucault and Jacques Derrida. In the final chapter, schools of thought (e.g., the Empiricists and the Rationalists) are broken down chronologically. In addition to introducing new concepts, this portion goes into greater detail on some of the philosophers presented earlier. It is distracting to have to flip back and forth to get all of the information on an individual. It is difficult to explain philosophy and psychology as a Dewey Decimal category without any philosophy or psychology books to show as examples.According to the product description, this book is aimed at the age 4-8 audience, a laughable designation unless there really is a budding philosophy genius in that age group. Another description shows a designation of grades 5-8, a more realistic assessment. In fact, I can't wait to put this book into the hands of one of our incoming 8th graders in August.What's in "A Young Person's Guide to Philosophy"? The first few pages explain the great unanswerable questions that thinking persons have asked since man had a cognitive brain. Why am I here? Where did the universe come from? Where do we go when we die? And so on.Then the story of philosophy begins chronologically with the Early Greeks and their individual, almost single-minded focus and extends through Post-modernism.One full-page color illustration shows each philosopher in his setting (and one "her" setting) with little splats of information all around him. The facing page outlines his background, time period, and philosophical beliefs (very briefly identified).After the major figures of Western Philosophical Thought are identified, then Schools of Philosophy are pursued and a more detailed structure developed. Each philosopher is placed in his proper school."A Young Person's Guide to Philosophy" perfectly suits what I want in our library: a fairly simple philosophy book with enough detail to interest the hardiest and heartiest learner.

The book is a good introduction for kids. Though not particularly very much inclusive when it comes to the choice of philosophers, it does give a fairly good introductory idea to totally new students to the study of philosophy of the ones chosen. The drawings by Lawman are beautiful. I liked very much the inclusion of Hypatia, which, to my mind, is something absolutely new to any history of philosophy. With the exception of Beauvoir, it is a pity that no other women had been chosen. On the whole, the book is wonderfully produced (a truism when it comes to DK publications), and well writen.

Interesting read in a great DK format. We are using this in conjunction with an other philosophy book which asks you to think like the different philosophers. It is nice to be able to cross reference these two books and learn about the different thinkers of our time.

This is absolutely the best introductory philosophy book forchildren I have ever seen. The philosophers are covered in historicalorder starting with the presocratics and ending with living philosophers. The pictures are stunning in the first half of the book. My 9yo loves it!

I just wonder what the publisher thought when the idea of an overview of philosophy for young people was first proposed. Luckily, they must not have been paying much attention because this extraordinary book is in print. It's really amazing that they could pull this book off. How do you explain what the great thinkers throughout history have thought to teenagers and younger? Somehow, Jeremy Weate was able to break down philosophies to their most basic forms. Weate was also aided by his sense of humor and by the pictures of Peter Layman which can help keep interest from swaying. This really is a very valuable resource. This book is supposed to be directed toward readers of the ages 4-8, but I think it is better for a little older audience. I was able use it very effectively in some college English courses I took in high school. A Young Person's Guide to Philosophy is really excellent. It is really an interesting read and can be very useful.

I think this might be a little difficult for four-to-eight-year olds, but it does give a clear and simple overview of the ideas of the great philosophers. There were a few typos, and the various type sizes were distracting. Each section begins with a full-page drawing of a particular philosopher and his milieu with callouts. The callouts are the part that might appeal to the four-to-eight-year olds. Many of them are quite silly.

Decartes would approve! This book is a wonderful introduction to philosophy for kids and young adults alike. I don't think that it is too much for kids 5-8; our 7 year old reads it and comes to us with new knowlege and questions to accompany. I would recommend it to anyone intersted in inspiring their kids to think about the world around them in new ways and to further their understanding of some of the greatest figures in history.
