This IS the definitive aquarium guide. Text and most photos date to the early 30's but tons of insight and information. Has been my standby since early 70's. Just replaced my original copy because nothing out there, new, compares. For those serious about learning aquarium fish be sure and get this to go with any modern publications.

Fantastic, VERY informative book that every aquarium owner ought to own a copy of. Also see a similar but equally as useful book called "Exotic Tropical Fishes". I recommend owning both. You will gain great knowledge and insight into how to properly maintain an aquarium with this book and on top of that, you will learn of many, many beautiful species of tropical fish, many of which you might not necessarily see in your local fish store.

This is the go to reference book for Aquarium owners. This book as been a point of reference since 1935., (which I have the 1st edition.)This printing was the 16th edition, 1953, and was in reasonable condition. I would recommend any edition of this series of books by Innes.

Great book on basic no frills care of aquariums and fish. You may need to experiment a little on the advice. Not all fish respond the same to various treatments and conditions. Book is "Old but not obsolete". I have given this book as a gift many times. By the way I am a Biologist specializing in Freshwater Aquatic Biology and Limnology (the study of inland waters).

I admit I bought this in no small part for the nostalgia factor. My father had this book lying around when I was a kid and I thought it was excellent reference material at the time as I learned about aquariums. So, I decided to get a copy.In that regard, it seemed easy to find "good" used copy cheaply, so I did.The book is clearly dated, but I think I'm surprised how well it holds up. The basic information about the fish is well done and accurate. I'm sure some things aren't current knowledge, but I didn't immediately spot it as I looked through my favorite fish. There was even some historical knowledge about the fish that I didn't know and was interested to learn.The pictures are also good shots and I consider the color plates like works of art. I realize at the time they were done because color wasn't easy in aquariums, but they have a certain style that I think is visually appealing and adds to the nostalgia element I mentioned. I show these color plates to my two year old boys and tell them stories about the fish.In the age of the internet, I'm not sure a general reference book like this is even needed when very good information and pictures can be found quickly with an Internet search. But, I think it's fun to have around. Who knows, maybe someday my boys will want a copy around for the same reasons I do.

Dr William T. Innes is considered to be the "father" of modern day aquarium fish keeping. He set the standard that many fish keeping guides follow. He has cataloged fishes for the aquarium by families and takes the time to distinguish differences among the families. Exotic Aquarium Fishes was published in 1935, and in general still a good source as a guide. Although some of that scientific names of fishes have changed, there are more varieties discovered and the equipment has changed, his approach to managing a successful aquarium still works. Dr. Innes also has done work in locating and breeding many varieties to be raised in an aquarium environment. One fish the Neon Tetra was named after him (Hyphessobrycon innesi). If you look inside the book, you will notice that many of the pictures for each species are drawn or painted. In 1935 photography was not moistly black and white so Dr. Innes drew many species to help describe to patterns and colors. If you plan to get a copy of his book, GET THE OLDER EDITONS THAT WERE PUBLISHED BY INNES PUBLISHING. Later other publishers have tried to expand this classic such as those by Aquariums Inc and TFH, a rival if Innes. These expanded editions ruin the quality of the guide and I'll bet if Dr. Innes was alive today he would be disappointed. There are newer and more detailed aquarium fish guides today, but if you want to read a book from the father and qualified expert of the hobby and trade, this is a wonderful book to get.

Bought it to replace my worn out orig. one I bought back in 1972-73 lots of good info. The Grand father of Aquarium books. Fun to go back and see the book that got me going with fish in the first place

It was my first book in the 60s and i patterned my research and study of desease to and from fish on and it help me more than anyone could ever know Passing on the old book 19th edition with the new 21st edition to my grandkids to make sure they can enjoy the hobby as mush as i did without leranring all the lesson the hard way.

I think the negative reviews on here are missing the bigger picture. So what if she relates writing through the zen mind thing and speaks a lot about spirituality. The point is to ultimately to get your ass in the chair and write. Quit thinking about it and do it. She also elaborates on writing whatever is in your mind...to just let go and let it come out. Think about your favorite writers. Are they real? Does some crazy stuff come out? Look at best selling writers like Stephen King, Dean Koontz, or even the chick that wrote 50 Shades.....did it takes some courage to write what they do? Don't u think some people think they are crazy? I can remember reading Stephen King's books and thinking this dude lost his mind. I love Stephen King's books. Is their writing the same s*** you read everywhere else? They write some pretty real stuff-stuff that only they could come up with. It's intensely personal, honest and unique to them. They had to dig deep and put down the bones regardless of what others thought. Charles Bukowski comes to mind. Dennis Lehane. James Crumley. Honest, real, raw. Read this book and get down the bones. Stop reading all this how to stuff. Learn writing by doing it. Make it real and personal. People want to read what YOU have to say, not what someone tell you will be a best seller or some dumb s***. Put your heart and soul out there and see what happens. At least you will be sincere and true to yourself and hopefully won't put the same generic crap that everyone else is putting out there.

Natalie Goldberg opens with this request: "listen to my slow Jewish voice." Which, upon first hearing, made me think, "Oh brother."It didn't take long to lose the resistance at all. Writing Down the Bones is a gem of a listen, it's like the oddest little ear candy ever. Her steady metronome style of speaking is filled with rules of engagement, with kindness, and with some arguments to counter your own self when you meet your true resistance. This was written well before the marketing / writing / promoting self-help boom came along, and thank goodness. Natalie Goldberg's book is entirely without jargon and tactics, god how I hate that word now, and yet it is a complete guide to "writing your asses off." I lived in Boulder and went to Naropa and everyone and their dog was all agog over Writing Down the Bones. It reminded me of being in junior high when all of the girls in my grade were going crazy over Flowers In the Attic, which did nothing for me. As a result, ok years later as an adult, I found fault with the title - I hated it actually. And then refused to read it. My own loss.Thankfully, years and years later I was making another long commute in the car, and had run out of things to listen to. Radio reception in the mountains, late at night, meant being hostage to the 3 stations that had no static: orchestral music and Jesus channels. No thank you. I grabbed Writing Down the Bones cassette pack (remember those?) from the library in haste... OK already, I yelled at myself. And popped in the tape and began my drive. It was a delightful late night drive that left me energized, alert, optimistic. She sprinkles in bits about her Buddhist practice which informed her writing of the book, without relying on too much woo, for those of you who think Buddhism is for the birds. It reminded me of my own really haphazard practice of Maitri, which means loving kindness. If you listen to Writing Down the Bones, you are engaging in an act of loving kindness to yourself. And if you allow yourself to take that extra step of actually writing, you're deepening that experience. Or, that's how I take it. You might actually also have a story to show for it. I've gone through the cassettes numerous times. And this is actually my 2nd purchase of the mp3 file since I couldn't recall the account and password I'd used for the first purchase. It's worth it to me to have Natalie Goldberg handy in my back pocket. You might think so, too.

I don't know how I've lived 21 years without this book. It's absurdly beautiful and will move you beyond words. I first borrowed this from my library, but before I even got a page through I knew I'd have to buy a copy of my own to reread and study. It's definitely one of my favorite books. I'm honestly thinking about buying several copies to give to my friends and family so they have no excuse not to read it, it's that good. This should be required reading for everyone on Earth. If you're wondering whether or not to read it, I'll make a decision for you: DO IT. You won't regret it.

“Let there be spaces in your togetherness, And let the winds of the heavens dance between you. Love one another but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls. Fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup. Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf. Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone, Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music. Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping. For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts. And stand together, yet not too near together: For the pillars of the temple stand apart, And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow.”This quotation from the classic book by Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet, illustrates why these writings have been popular for so long. This reviewer remembers getting his first copy of the book in Boston during the early 1950's, when it was widely circulated among college students at the time, as well as young adults who were starting out in that decade. It had a fresh take on the institutions of life, and offered that generation a sense of breaking away from convention without being particularly radical. It was a way to be non-conforming, without departing too far from traditional values. This may explain why it surged in popularity in the 1960s, when the generation coming of age at that time had a new kind of permission to break away, yet have a sense of a valid value system at the same time. To read and talk about The Prophet became a quite "cool" thing to do. Gibran's work had been around for a long time, but it is the type of literature that has a way of being rediscovered as each new generation comes along. I lost my original copy forty or so years ago. You can read it a thousand times and you'll learn something every time you read it. I plan to be buried with the copy I just bought. There is more wisdom within it's pages and if you live by the lessons taught there you're sure to live a much richer life. Try reading it with your soul mate.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in philosophy, poetry and classic literature.

Timeless poetic stories That bring out the best. This was recommended to me by a friendly waitress on evening. Since then we've been recommending books to each other every time I see her. This recommendation was a unexpected treat. Take the time to read and enjoy its warmth! You'll be recommending this to strangers just as she did to me, making friends in the process. My lifetime favorite. I was introduced to this book in the '70s and I have never turned it down since then. I've kept on going back again and again to its beautiful and poetic messages. This book is so timeless and so inspiring that I couldn't keep quoting and sharing Kahlil's words with my kids, relatives, coworkers and friends. This is a book that I intend to introduce even to my grandchildren someday.

Save your eyes and do not purchase this particular copy!! Seriously, the book is only 38 pages.... so let's use the tightest, smallest font possible!? That makes noooo sense.This copy Is more like a 'phamplet' and not so much a bound book. I do not even require reading glasss yet I seriously will never read this copy. Seriously, it's maybe an 8 point font.If you want my copy, let me know. Sooooo frustrating and ridiculous.

I purchased this book as a replacement to the one I had given away. This is one of my all-time favorite books and truly a classic. No matter what religion or belief you have, this book will apply and you will relate to it. This is one to read over and over during the course of your lifetime and to share with loved ones, and alsowith people that you just think may need to read it.

I am a Catholic mom, and I buy a lot of religious books for my young children in attempt to build a home library for me to teach them the faith. In general, the genre is pretty crappy. Either bad theology, illustrations, text, you name it. This book is different. The text is thought provoking but not too complicated for a young child, and not condescending. The illustrations are better than most. I find it is a good conversation starter with my 4 year old, and even gave me some spiritual encouragement. I think it would also be a good book for younger grade schoolers, too. Nice binding on the hardcover. Would make a nice gift for a godchild, etc.

I just received my copy of “Maybe God is Like That Too” in the mail from Amazon today! I LOVE this book! As a Grandma, raising our granddaughter, in the city of Philadelphia, and someone who cares passionately about inviting children and adults to find God in the ordinary moments of life, this book echoes my heart's desire for finding God in our world. I will read it to my grandchildren, my children's Sunday School class and to adults! Thank you, Jennifer Grant!

I love this story. I think it really captures the kinds of things I want my son to know about God, without all the dogma and legalism. Great for unfundamentalist parents

This book just arrived today and I read it straight away to my girls. They loved it and so did I! This is a very sweet story of a young boy who lives with his grandmother and is curious to know where God is in the city. She tells him to look for love, joy, peace and calm, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control and there he will see God. It is delightfully illustrated and would make a great addition to any home or church library!

Love the artwork and the premise of the book: we "see" God in the world and actions of others around us. A great book that encourages children to exemplify the characteristics of God's goodness in the everyday. This book is also helpful for those who grew up in a faith that looks for Santa Claus God-sightings...how He gives them what they want. Grant shows that God is seen through the actions of others in our lives. Missing God in your life? Look around! He may be speaking to you through others!

(Disclaimer: Jennifer is a friend.) I bought this book for my godson, and my mom and I looked through it before giving it to him. It's lovely. It teaches kids to look for signs of God's presence in the world around us, using the famous verse about "the fruit of the Spirit" (love, joy, peace, patience, and so on). When the little boy in the story tries doing this, he can see that God is everywhere. Strongly recommended.

This book is so simple and sweet. We are doing a series on the Fruit of the Spirit for both adults and children in our church, and this book was the perfect addition for the children. My 6 year old and 5 year old both enjoyed it and retained the truth contained within the story. I can't recommend this highly enough!

Such a sweet book. I'm a Christian mom with two little boys and we read many children books about faith and mainly the Jesus Storybook bible. This is easily one of my favorites because it shows a child how they can see God in everyday ordinary moments. It teaches them this through the fruit of the spirit. Joy, patience, peace etc. I love this so much and my sons, 5 and 6 yr olds did too. Honestly this book even made me, a grown adult stop and think about it's message and I still do from time to time. Stop and look at all the beautiful ordinary things in life and you will see God all around.
