Examples illustrate many of these ideas along the way. The subject as presented in the book is clearly the result of many years of teaching the course to able students. Not much wasted motion here - Oppenheim's got the presentation down to a science - so every paragraph counts.The focus is on the development and application of certain concepts as powerful tools for dealing with the title subject. Once these tools are in place, the entire subject is transformed in a way which makes many results almost transparent. There are not many other subjects that lend themselves to such a clarifying process.This is not a math book, but the tools are mathematical. Whether you find this book a joy or a struggle depends on your background. If you are moderately comfortable with complex numbers and complex exponentials; if you have at least seen Fourier and Laplace transforms before; if you know what an eigenfunction is - then you will be rewarded in proportion to your effort.Problem sets are used to expand on some ideas and introduce others, as well as to help you gauge your understanding. The problems are varied and some are harder than others. You might get stuck in spots, but in the end you really should be able to do most of them. If you have great difficulty with many of them, then you might need to brush up on the math a bit before continuing. Have fun!

I have used this book when I was in college and found it hard to understand, at first. Later on I started using it as a reference and begun to appreciate it. The trick was to read it very patiently (extremely), line by line. No short cuts. If one wants to highlight the most important part of any section of this book, that person will end up highlighting the entire book. It is that dense in information. I have consulted this book several times as a reference since then. I have seen some other work of Oppenheim's and I believe he is one of the most talented person in this field and knows exactly how to present this subject in the most graceful way.As far as the end of chapter questions are concerned, I should agree to the fact that they are very hard. One needs to be extremely knowledgeable to attack some of the problems. If you are novice to Signal Processing, chances are you will not even understand the solution let alone the question.Bottom line: I believe this book can be used by any body who has some basic understanding of mathematics. You do not have to be an expert at all.

The content is superb and useful, while the narrative is satisfying. The author uses abundant analogies taken from normal life (such as commercial bank vs credit union, but this is familiar to US), fiction (such as Medieval fortress defense), technology world (such as firewall, deny by default), or even the programming language (such as reserved keywords and idioms) to explain the legal concepts of IP and IP laws, making it really comfortable for the targeted audience (IT professionals with little to no legal background or interest) to follow and understand. Besides, plenty of real and fictional example cases are used to further explain and distinguish the concepts, make it even easier to grasp the ideas.

What distinguishes this book is context - it puts open source in the context of economics and real-life IP concerns. It isn't just about the legalese. It talks about the purposes of intellectual property and how we make agreements about how to share and sell that IP. No other book addresses concerns like employment agreements, contracts, and nonprofit organizations, all of which are essential to successfully working with open source today.

I am an attorney with a decent background in the basics of intellectual property. I bought this book because I wanted to learn more about IP issues related to open source licensing. While this book isn't really written for an attorney audience I still found it to be very useful. In addition to dealing with the important legal issues related to open source licenses the book also does a great job of discussing and analyzing the economics and community issues that are critical to understanding the open source movement in general. He also does an excellent job of discussing the various theories and philosophies behind the open source movement which I think are important to understand for those who are really interested in having a thorough understanding of open source. The author is an attorney and programmer and the book is geared more towards an audience who has a decent background or knowledge in computer programming. If you do not have a background in computer programming some of the examples and analogies the author uses are a bit hard to follow but in most cases I did not find it was critical to fully understand the examples to understand the author's point. Overall I think it is a great book for developers who work on open source platforms and for attorneys who are looking for an general overview or introduction to the legal issues which surround open source software.

I've read quite a few books on this topic; so far this has been the best. First of all, the author doesn't only cover open source license (like previous books from O'Reilly did), he goes deeper, explaining how current IP's laws affect the whole software business. The chapters on patents, copyright, trade secrets and contracts bring more depth and make this a valuable book for anybody working in the IT industry, even for people not involved in developing or using open source projects

There really is no other book available that I can find to open your eyes to the legal stuff if you want to make some software, use some software, or run a web business.It covers a lot of ground and options, most which you will not be needing. That type of basic reference and knowledge is just the beginning.I would read this before I started talking to lawyers just to see if they know what they are talking about.

The book goes through the various types of IP, explaining the difference between trademarks, patents, trade secrets and, of course, copyright. It does it in a language that is explicitly designed for software engineered (although at times I found the metaphors either too strained or too cute), and explains *open legal issues* well (clearly classifying things as an educated guess or an accepted precedent). If you do software, not just open source software, you owe it to yourself to understand the issues!

Pithy read but lays out all of the facts on open source licensing with use cases.

This book is an excellent resource for anyone involved in technology products. It is a first class primer on intellectual property and uses examples familiar to technical people. There is unavoidable legal discussions but they are presented in a manner that makes it easy to understand.Anyone in a technology oriented field, especially the computer industry, should read this book.

This is the best recipe book I've bought in 2018 (I buy many cookbooks!), and love it so much I ordered more copies to give as xmas gifts to special friends (alongside sample dressings made from the book). My ONLY issue with this book is that I wish the author would have mentioned which dressings need to be refrigerated after they are made.

Exceptional for audition material! Each monologue has a brief foreword that helps set the scene/character/story, which is immensely helpful.

For actors who find themselves preparing for auditions for casting directors who want a melange of materials to show off their talents, this book does the trick. Monologues easiy categorized by length and topic, tragic to comic, it has made my life easier. And anyone who makes my life easier is a sidekick of mine. The book is exactly what it claims to be - a brief recap of the significant periods, events, and people of US history. None of the sections tell you the whole story, but there are some decent references for further reading, and I found that browsing Wikipedia and a world map while reading helped me fill in some gaps. Some content gets repeated (especially in the timelines of wars, etc) and some sections are oddly short (for instance, the Tonkin Incident section doesn't actually describe what happened, although it was later discussed in a timeline), but those aren't major issues. I liked the references back and forth through history that show larger patterns, cycles, and causes, and I appreciate the sustained attention paid to systemic inequalities, especially for blacks and women, that have persisted through US history.This is my first Kindle book (I'm reading it on a mac) so maybe this is an issue of the medium, but I find the formatting pretty clunky, and the lack of photos, images, and maps is unfortunate.

Where else can you get an easy-to-read overview of 500 years of American history--from who really discovered America to how we elected our first black president--and have FUN reading it? I saw author Kenneth C. Davis interviewed on CNN and was mesmerized by what he had to say and how he said it. When they flashed his credentials on the screen as the author of this book, I bought it immediately. This isn't your high school or college history textbook. This one is so much fun you might even stay up past your bedtime reading it! Quite simply, read this book and you'll be quite literate when it comes to the big facts about our nation's past--whether you want to win at Trivial Pursuit, impress someone at a cocktail party or (most important) develop an understanding of why and how things happened THEN that deeply impact our NOW.

Love this book. I'm about halfway through it and I can tell you that it's highly readable, entertaining and captivating. While sharing what some would think are arcane facts about our history, author Kenneth C. Davis presents the human part of our history so we get a much clearer picture of how we've arrived at this point. (NOTE: We're not always heroes in this life--we're just humans doing the best we can do at the time. This is a marvelous book and I highly recommend it!

I love history, but I didn't feel like me were always told the truth. First off who was around to tell Washington chop down the tree, how did we know it was a cherry tree. I feel like history has been misleading all my life. This book is wonderful I wish I had this book in school discussion we would had. I always hated history and didn't retain much of what I learned, so now that I'm trying to teach my kids I needed a refresher course. This book hits the highlights of history and does a great job of explaining everything. I feel like I've learned a lot.

Not a scholarly exposition of US history, but a fun way to get the essential facts. Great for youth and adults who are bored with the thought of learning history. If all US citizens knew history even at this level, our choice of public officials would be very different.

Obviously the title of the book is a misnomer. It is clear from the start that it is concerned only with American history. The goal of the author is to make history interesting so that people who have dosed off in history class can get interested again. In that regard, the book is successful. There is a strong narrative flow and a suspense that keeps you turning pages, despite the awkwardness of the question-answer format and the annoying repetitiveness. Pluses include the "voices", excerpts and quotes from historical figures and documents, as well as a long list of book recommendations for those wishing to delve further.The book suffers from major flaws, however: in many places, it is shallow as well as selective in its choice of topics. Much of the book boils down to a narration of "facts" without much analysis, the kind of information you could get reading headlines in news archives. While there is an argument for not making the book excessively long, much space is wasted by those "timelines" of every war and crisis that serve no purpose other than to bore the reader to death.Secondly, the selective choice of topics is most visibly felt in the area of foreign policy. Much of the outside world is disregarded until it makes itself felt (e.g., during a war). In this, the book is symptomatic of isolationist American culture as a whole, where people will look up a country only after we have troops there. That tendency to ignore the outside world is precisely why American foreign policy is in shambles. If a book that proclaims the wish to re-educate Americans about history is woefully inadequate when it comes to describing America's relation with the outside world, then there is no hope!As an example, I choose the Middle East. That region, of vital importance to the US, recipient of the bulk of US foreign aid, heavy trade and influence, and location of most of America's recent wars, is brought up in only a few places. A few pages are devoted to it in connection with the Arab Oil Embargo, without much explanation of the background - why the Arabs and Israel were fighting. There is no real discussion of the question of Palestine, the deep injustice most people in the Arab world feel about that issue, and the role of the US in creating and perpetuating that injustice. The US role in the failed Peace Process of the 1990s is completely absent. The book talks about the two Iraq wars, again without much background as to the whys. There is no mention of how, throughout the 1990s, Dick Cheney and others in the subsequent Bush administration were lobbying Clinton for an Iraq War. There is no mention of the Caspian Oil pipeline, again a desire since the 1990s and one of the major reasons for a war in Afghanistan.Finally, the book is more or less a "names and dates" book. Too many pages are devoted to descriptions of presidents and their campaigns, and too few devoted to describing how ordinary Americans lived. A much better read is Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States", but even that has gaping holes in foreign issues, especially when it relates to the Middle East.
