My hopes were set pretty high for this title. Overall, this was a good devotional for teen girls. I went through the first part with my 13 year old daughter and she really enjoyed it. It’s definitely written to a much younger audience than my 38 year old self and it does a good job at talking at their level.However, I feel that I need to get my biggest concern with this title out of the way before I go on:At the end of Day 1, Priceless has something very similar to the much recognized “sinner’s prayer.” I really think I would’ve enjoyed this book much more if this part wasn’t in there, since I personally don’t believe in the sinner’s prayer. It takes more than simply saying a prayer to be transformed in Christ and to live your life as His disciple. There’s a lot more I could say here, but it’s not appropriate in this review as it’s not about the book.I liked the layout of Priceless and how it addresses so much of what every teenage girl goes through and feels. It lets them know that those feelings are normal, but feelings aren’t necessarily true. And then it shows them the truth in God’s word and helps them to shift their thinking into more positivity.I loved that it had so many activities to do! My daughter and I wrote prayers together, and it really opened up a lot of discussions about how she feels and the best ways to deal with those feelings. I definitely recommend going through this book with your daughter! It was pretty eye opening.I received a copy of this book from NetGalley. This in no way influenced my review.

This is one of the sweetest, meaningful devotionals I have probably ever read. The daily devos are easy to read, engaging, and totally relateable. Each little chapter begins with a feeling and then adds a truth. For example, "When I feel beautiful. . . I'm reflecting God's glory"; "When I feel invisible. . . I'm seen & known"; "When I feel like giving up. . . I'm about to be rescued" (and so on). Through the trials and joys of her own life, author Jen Barrick pulls experience and humor into each devo, effectively getting down to the level of each girl and whatever fear they face. She stresses that when we have those days of not feeling enough, God's enough-ness more than covers us.Jen's story in itself is a work of love & miracles. She had prayed for God to grant her a boldness, but little did she know He would answer that prayer through the trials of a severe car accident & brain injury. What a testimony! and a challenge to live out loud the Hope we have in Christ.This devotional is a beautiful and simple way to teach girls & teens how to study Scripture AND put it to work in their own lives.

The first word that comes to mind when I think of this story is 'charming'. It has the feel of an old world myth or fairy tale. Odd isn't a disgruntled, angry youth like so many of the characters in current YA novels. He's just a quirky kid with a quick mind who loves him mother. I know, that doesn't sound like the makings of a fun adventure story full of talking animals, mischievous gods and frost giants, but that is exactly what it is. Odd's quirkiness, intelligence and humor are exactly what make the story work.The fact Odd has to puzzle out problems in order to achieve his goals, makes this a great story for parents to read to their young children. There's no horrible violence, none of the animals gets hurt, and it doesn't take itself to seriously. I especially enjoyed Odd's reasons for believing ice imprisons rainbows. It's cute and clever and adds to the magic of the story without the need for wizards in pointy hats.If you enjoy Norse myths and are up for a more light-hearted take on coming of age stories, 'Odd and the Frost Giants' is worth picking up. It's a short, happy tale to read during a gray winter day.

Why I Think Boys May Enjoy ThisWell, first off I must admit that I am a huge fanboy for anything Neil Gaiman. That being said, this middle grade story falls into the category of must-read primer to Norse Mythology (in addition to, you know, Gaiman’s recently published collection of Norse stories). This one, however, is written with that middle grade audience in mind and does so wonderfully. It’s rare to get a “new” Norse Myth story but Gaimain does this with Odd. He uses the familiar framework (Loki does something to screw things up for everyone else) and creates an entirely new myth around Odd.The story itself has an Aesop’s Fables feel to it with a familiar plot: magical animals appear to our would-be hero, who helps them even at risk to his own life. Of course, the animals turn out to be gods. In a very Viking way, however, Odd is rewarded not simply for his good heart, but for his bravery and cleverness in helping the gods take back Asgard from the Frost Giant that tricked Loki. Odd’s adventure with the gods is framed around a very nice story about a young boy losing his father and dealing with a disability, yet remaining positive and determined no matter what was placed in front of him.It would be remiss to discuss this version of the book without giving credit to the amazing illustrations by Chris Riddell. In some cases, he was given a full two-page spread to work with and he did not disappoint. With his simple black and white drawings accented in silver (which is just gorgeous and found throughout), this is one of the prettiest books I’ve held in my hands in a while. Riddell’s art amplifies Gaiman’s story in a masterful way. Visions of the Norse gods as they are presented in actual Norse myth (not the Marvel comics version) are wonderful.Content/AppropriatenessIt’s a myth story, so normal myth stuff applies: temptation by beauty, death (but nothing cruel or gruesome), and hardships for our hero followed by rewards for his performance by the gods. There is clearly no language or content concerns across the board and the only real death is an “off-screen” death of Odd’s father by illness after nearly drowning in the frozen waters of the north.The artwork is all G-rated and there is nothing to suggest that the youngest of readers couldn’t enjoy this story. It would make a great read out-loud story with its numerous large pictures and a strong reader as young as 8 could easily pick this up and run with it on their own. If I had to guess, Mr. Gaiman was plugging along on his "Norse Mythology" book, stuck this in as a chapter, then went "hey, this could be a children's book!"...Ok, probably not given the timing of everything. But the similarity of the prose between the two is simply profound. I picked this up within days of finishing Norse Mythology, and it was as though I had never stopped reading.As with all of Mr. Gamain's books, the writing in this is superb. In particular, there is something about the way he has written this and Norse Mythology that makes them feel old, in an antique, biblical sort of way. The style fits very, very well with the setting.The setting is... not what I expected. I expected a story more in the vein of Beowulf. Instead, this was a romp through the mythology of Loki (the fox), Odin (the eagle), and Thor (the bear), kicked out of Asgard by none other than the frost giants. While a good read, it wasn't great. It was, as with most mythology, oddly alien and remote. This is a fine thing, as it is a great introduction to Norse mythology for kids.With that said, this will be a book I expect my daughters to either read with me or ask a TON of questions (both of which are fine). There is simply too much subtle interaction going on in the background between the three gods for her to simply pick up and read away. If any kids book is a "this needs to be read twice to really get it," this is it.I am certainly not disappointed with the purchase. Just not quite what I expected. As a comparison to Mr. Gaiman's other kids books, this is certainly not the masterpiece of adventure/horror "Coraline" nor the silly read-it-whenever adventure of "Fortunately, the Milk." A solid, if slightly niche, addition to our growing library of Mr. Gaiman's books.

This was such a charming, whimsical story. I almost held off on buying it since it's a little on the short side, but when I saw the price was $1.99, I found it hard to resist. I'm really glad that I gave in and got it because it's a wonderfully offbeat little story. I love how Odd "beats" the Frost Giant (it's non-violent). I really don't want to spoil the fun for future readers, so I won't say any more. Grab a copy of this one and read it with someone you love, whether they're young or just young-at-heart. I'm a young-at-heart reader and I loved _Coraline_ and I loved this little story, too. Gaiman is fantastic at telling whimsical YA tales.

This is one of the clearest books on how to manifest your desires and how to identify and eliminate the obstacles and resistance to achieving your desired life. There are parts in the book that will give you a "psychic shock" but once you get to understand and accept the truth of it, you will be more free to finally create the life you want; how we create our own victim experiences is one example of a "psychic shock" .I read the book in one afternoon; it appears to be a quick read, but I'm now in the process of writing down the main teachings of the book and find I'm discovering more information as I seek out the notes I want to preserve in my journal. I recommend this book to any brave soul who would rather be a Master at Manifestation than the person Society calls "GOOD".

I normally don't take the time to write reviews, but had to come back and do it since I'm looking for more resources. This book was recommended to me by my child's Pediatrician. It was a godsend! I am raising a strong willed child, and I did not realize that I was focusing on so many areas that didn't matter (but I thought were important). The information in this book made clear sense, and I saw my own child in the examples. My life was a struggle every single day! I knew that I was going to have a struggle with my child, and I knew what the triggers were; I just didn't know how to end them. My relationship with my child has improved so much, thanks to this book! It's still not perfect, but at least we have dealt with the issues we were dealing with. And the thing that's humbling and encouraging, is that I changed the way I behave/ respond, and my child's behavior followed. I was not a bad parent, I just didn't have the information I needed to guide my child toward better behavior.

My difficult child is now 15. I think I read this book when he was a little child, as I do remember it, and it is definitely written for parents with small children. My biggest complaint is that over half the book is "war stories." Story after story about children who are difficult and how and what they did to get this distinction. I already know how kids can be difficult. I was looking for more concrete strategies in dealing with an older difficult child as well. This book would also be a good read for new elementary teachers or teachers in training. Also, BOTH parents need to buy into this strategy, or it won't work.

I think this would be a good reference for parents struggling with toddlers, but it says nothing about kids older than 9. It was very much common sense and consistency, though he didn't rule out learning disabilities and ADD/ADHD. I just didn't find it that helpful for an older kid.

This book is a great resource for tools to use to help manage and improve a difficult child’s behavior. It is also helpful to know you are not alone in struggling with a difficult or manipulative child. I find myself more able to roll with the punches, laugh when I can, and see the improvement that has come from the strategies offered. We are celebrating success more than suffering angst. Still some tough days, but a very helpful and positive resource!

Difficult children can "ruin your life," which in turn can ruin theirs. Do yourself and your child a favor by taking the time to read this book and let it sink in. There are way more solutions to your trials and tribulations than you likely realize, and this book holds the key. You'll be glad you found this amazing resource. The author knows the reality of a difficult child. He was a child psychiatrist with easy kids then his next child was a "difficult" child. He said he even skipped church due to the embarrassment of his daughter's behavior. He really breaks down the differences between behaviors and sensitivities. He helps to identify what CAN be changed and how to zero in on those behaviors so you can focus on them. He also teaches how to discover what are not really behavior issues (example in my own home, my child was really sensitive to textures so would have a tantrum when I put shirts with certain seaming styles, like a two tone sleeve with a seam on the upper arm). Very good book to have, I had for my own child and buy it over and over to give to young moms at the end of their ropes.

I felt so alone in the fact that I was experiencing such a challenge with everyday routines because my daughter was always being so difficult. And especially after finding out that no one I was sharing my experience with was understanding why I am having such issues. No one was seeing the trouble I was referring to. This book was recommended to my by our pediatrician, after I mentioned to him that my daughter is very defiant, stubborn, picky, and overall negative and unhappy child. When I read the first pages of it I had the feeling that this book was based on my daughter's case. I could not believe it. Turns out that she is one of the very difficult children out there. She practically does not comb her hair, does not wear socks, because they bother her, wears shoes 1.5 size larger because otherwise they "feel tight" , only wears the oldest and most loose clothing, new clothes she cuts with scissors ,because they all "bother/itch" her. Sleeps uncovered, and with summer pajama -and we live in NJ, this winter was brutal! Falls asleep between 11.30pm-12am every night after a three hour fight, she is never sleepy. Sleeping is boring to her. Has constant nightmares about spiders, etc. She has extremely low sensory threshold-she is always hot. Does not eat lunch, dinner, eats only a handful of foods and certain brands , if I change the brand she wont touch the food... Anything you say she ignores, cant follow directions, lies, exists as if in a state of oblivion. When asked why she disobeys, she says that her "brain tells her to do so". It is so overwhelming that I was feeling like I need therapy for myself! This is just the beginning. I cant believe that I haven't found out earlier about ODD, everyone is talking about autism and ADHD that this particular disorder is overlooked. And IT IS SO CHALLENING AND DRAINING to be living with the constant fights and tantrums, which are inevitable and uncontrollable.. The book gives a very objective overview of typical situation which are a part of the everyday challenge. It provides a system which has the potential to alleviate the stress by helping you predict and understand the reasoning behind your child's behavior and the reason for the negative outlook, defiance and opposition over your authority as a primary caregiver. We are still very early in the process of monitoring and understanding the pattern of behavior which preludes the outburst, but I am optimistic that it will help us . Will follow up with another review in a few weeks.

My “difficult” son is now an accomplished engineer...this was on my night stand for years and referred to daily... surprise!!! He now has a bit of a difficult daughter and I purchased this (again) to help them guide her in the best way...don’t let the title put you off...it’s a beautiful way to raise a child to their potential
