I'm very torn on this book because I think there are some fairly good messages in it, but at the same time, it endorses some things I don't like.As for the things I like, this book has a strong message of justice, forgiveness, and taking your life into your own hands. Those are really valuable things for teens to learn - that they CAN make change if they persevere. It did a very good job following up on how the lessons Cole learned in the island don't translate directly into the real world, which I think is very helpful in digesting how YOU as the reader can implement change in your own behavior, even if you can't move to a remote island.The things I didn't like about this book, however, are a little more varied.I understand that certain things about Cole are based on his past, but I think there was an unrealistic teetering between his delinquent personality and his reformed personality. His aggression toward Garvey when Garvey won't spell things out for him was excessive. I feel like it would be more realistic for him to be passively annoyed about it rather than lashing out. He's known Garvey a long time at this point and he knows from experience that he's incredible wise and experienced. Everything he says has meaning and with the number of times he's proven to be right, I find it unrealistic that Cole would have so little faith in him. One moment, Cole is yelling at Garvey over the phone saying he doesn't know what he's talking about and the next, he's preaching forgiveness and understanding. I know people are flawed, but this seemed more like the author had a vision for the good and changed person Cole was supposed to be but felt he needed to balance it out. Except, in the balancing process, he overcorrected to outward aggression when it would have made more sense for his aggression to be suppressed.The next thing I didn't like about this book is subjective, but something I feel very strongly about. As someone who grew up in an abusive household, I do NOT like that this book endorses trying to help your abuser. I don't think there's anything wrong with being cordial toward an abuser in the occasion that you come across them, but this book actively encourages its readers to reach out. I think the author had good intentions with this, but the target audience is very impressionable and in the real world, a very high percentage of abusers will not change. There are many that do, but encouraging a teenager, who for all intents and purposes is a child, to reach out and take responsibility for their abusive, adult parent, is horrible writing. Accepting an apology and reconnecting after an abuser has already changed their behavior and wishes to right their wrongs is one thing, but trying to fix them when they're still unrepentant and blaming everyone around them is absolutely detrimental to the healing process of an abuser survivor. Abuse survivors already have serious problems with trying to help their abusers, because it's almost always someone they love (like a parent or significant other). This is one of the reasons the cycle of abuse is so hard to break free of. Having a book encourage this in the band of love and healing is the main reason I knocked my rating down to two stars. I absolutely can't endorse this.The next thing I didn't like about this book was how sensationalist it felt. There was this constant feeling that Cole was some kind of saint because of his experiences. I know that's not how it was meant to come across, but let me tell you, as a teenager - and even now as a young adult - I would have hated him. He became one of those people who seems like he's on a high horse, constantly regaling his story of redemption in a way that feels like he's trying to show off how 'wise' he is for his age. Teenagers hate that shit. There is absolutely no way that an entire school of students would have backed him when he came off like some kind of holier than thou wiseass. Teenagers in particular, find people like that to be obnoxious. That's why I'd you try to preach your Christianity or something at school, other students will steer clear of you or bully you. It's downright annoying.The last thing I didn't like about this book was the ending. The author uses coincidence and what was seemingly supernatural to tie up loose ends. It didn't feel satisfying to me and it felt like a cop-out.All in all, this book had decent parts to it but I cannot recommend it. I know next to nothing about the author's personal life, but this whole book came off like an abuser's 'we can change if you just stick around and get hit long enough' wet dream.

My school began using Restorative Justice last year. We read the book's prequel Touching Spirit Bear and the students loved it. It helped students grasp the concepts of Restorative Justice. They requested more. I just finished Ghost and we will read this one to start our new school year. In Spirit Bear Cole learns ways to control his emotions when he is by himself. In Ghost he must apply these new skills when faced with others. I work with students identified with emotional and behavioral problems in grades 7-12.

I read this book because I read the first one. My son was reading Touching the Spirit Bear as a class assignment. I was trying yo help him answer some questions and was hooked. So after reading the first one I really wanted to see what the next step was for Peter and Cole. Even a screwup can make a positive impact.

This is the best book I have ever read, and I have read thousands of books. I won't go into everything I liked about it because that would take forever, but I will talk briefly about one. The characters felt so real in the book,I felt their emotions as I read about them. When Cole felt angry, I felt angry. When he felt helpless, I felt helpless. The author is truly talented, and this is a very well written and thought out book.

What do you do after significant life change? Good handling of main character's anger issues and resolution of reentry into normal life after banishment. Author continues rebuilding relationship with main character's victim. Best part of the book is the author's analysis of the writing process and self-revelation in the novel. Good read!

This is the sequel to Touching Spirit Bear and is a must read! These books have sparked a love for reading in my teen son who is a very reluctant reader. We started reading the first book as a read out loud. My son got in a hurry and finished the book on his own. When this book arrived in the mail, he sat and read the whole thing in one afternoon....a FIRST! Thank you for a wonderful story Ben Mikaelsen!

Read Spirit Bear first then this book. It is a must read for kids 10-15. Although anyone can read it including adults. It's a great book about bullying and the consequences

I read this book because my middle school son had to read it in school. I wanted to connect with my son. I had no idea how much I would enjoy the first and second book of the Spirit Bear. When I started reading I didn't stop until I was done with entire book. Young or old these books have truly beautiful life lessons for any age. Really, really enjoyed the transformation of Cole and Peter. An amazing, well written book full of valuable lessons for any age.

I've read a lot of books on changing behavior and building habits and James Clear's Atomic Habits is my new favorite. This book is different from others in the way it covers an enormous amount of ground in the larger area of self-improvement while seamlessly tying all these ideas back into the central theme of habits.One of the core concepts in Atomic Habits is to focus on the small improvement. The impact a 1% improvement per day can make may appear negligible at first, but Clear makes a compelling argument that in the case of habits, thinking small produces the biggest results over time. "Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement," explains Clear.Over the months and years, the accumulated effect of small habitual daily behaviors is staggering. Early in the book we are also warned that this compounding works both ways, so we'd better make sure we're making it work in the positive direction, not for the negative.This is a concept I was introduced to years ago under a different name - Kaizen - the Japanese term for continuous incremental improvement. What's different and new in this book is how the concept is applied specifically to building habits.I found the information introduced in chapter two about behavior change at the identity level to be spot-on. I got this through Audible (audiobook format). I thought it strange that one of the reviewers mentioned that the author kept mentioning his website. He does, but I didn't think anything of it. Going through the book (ie. listening to it), I was interested in the habits report card. I typically listen 2X, so the URL went by quickly. Later when I had some time I thought easy peasy, just Google atomic habits score card.The search revealed no real tangible links. Using the book title as the URL, it redirects to his website's page for the book. And that page is more or less just a sales page.No biggie I think, its I the audiobook, I just need to go back and find it. I think this is a reasonable defense to have people use an explicit url to get to the info. I backtrack and find the url. Type it in my browser ... and ... you need to give him your email.I already bought your book. I get enough spam as it is and I don't want to be on a mailing list. Disappointing.

Decent guide for Costa Rica surf from a surfer mindset on a budget.I would recommend a Lonely Planet guide to use with this guide. Both together will cover almost everything you will need to know on how to survive with limited funds.

I bought the book and the kindle edition prior to my trip to CR. They are very informative with great locations on where to stay, where to eat and most importantly, where to surf. If you're going to CR to surf, this is a must read.I'd highly recommend it to anyone who's going to CR.

Just bought this for a surf trip to Tamarindo area, it is VERY outdated..might have been more helpful 10 years ago.

Update from the old one. Good resource

Me and four mates are travelling through centrel America on a surf trip, this book wasthe most helpful as we based our next destination on what we read about the surf spot. Really helpful with twice as much info than any other surf guide book we were using.

Overall does a good job of local tips, breaking down many breaks, etc... Would like more detail on more breaks, and many of the detailed breaks are detailed on the internet. Still best guide I've found and worth buying.

I bought this book for my first surf adventure to Costa Rica. It definitely had most of the surf spots covered withbasic info on how to get there, best conditions, etc -

This book was recommended to me by a physician who couldn't really decide what to do with his life. This book is a great book that uses sailing as a way to describe life. The author explains his childhood story and how he got into sailing. He says that he wished that he taught his kids to sail because sailing creates a way of thinking that can be directly used for managing your life. If you want to change your life and push yourself in a different direction then this is the book to read. It isn't very long, but it has a lot of great information in the pages that it has. I recommend this to any person whether it be an adult trying to figure out what to do with his or her life, or even a college student who wants to decide what career they are interested in.

I received this book as a gift from a dear friend and on her recommendation read it. Mr. Bode's seemingly simple and straight forward approach is anything but as far as understanding the "navigation" of life. I've never sailed so some of the nautical references escape me but it doesn't matter. The advice on how to approach the intricacies of life abound. I bought three copies to give out to friends, and one for my boss. It's that good.

My favorite quotation . . . "For the truth is that I already know as much about my fate as I need to know. The day will come when I will die. So the only matter of consequence before me is what I will do with my allotted time. I can remain on shore, paralyzed with fear, or I can raise my sails and dip and soar in the breeze." This is much more than a book about sailing. Bode's words ring of honesty and truth. This book inspired me to "raise my sails" back in 1997 and they are still up today.

One of the most interesting books I’ve ever read. You don’t have to have grown up sailing to appreciate the book, but doing so helps you identify with the characters. Great commentary on life!!!

One of my all time favorite books! I have purchased multiple copies and given away to friends and family. The message is universal, something for everyone to take away. Great easy read before bed too.

Great story. Tells a story AND sums up life by telling you that life isn't as fulfilling if you take shortcuts. Very common sense story. A great read for me and could be useful to anyone IMO...

For someone who is just learning to sail, I am envious that the author learned to sail as a boy. To really enjoy the book, I think it helps to know something about sailing. I understood the nautical terms in the book because of my sailing lessons. It is one thing to read about an accidental jibe, but quite another to actually have the experience. What could have been a very sad story about a man who had to give up something he loved to do for the sake of his family and his career, was instead turned into an uplifting metaphor for how he lived his life.

This little book is a wonderful way to easily explain through metaphor the philosophy of life. I believe this is a must read for young adults to grasp important life lessons in a non-threatening way. When parents try to forward these concepts, children, especially young adults, just tune them out. But, this book allows the lessons to be discovered by themselves. It is also a great read for people of any age to remind them of how to better live their lives and to guide them toward correcting life errors they may be making. I use it as a gift book to people of all ages and recommend it to parents and grandparents to help guide their young charges. Gift this book as it truly is a gift.

Kim suggests that God stretches our faith, and once we have walked in a particular path with God, God is going to advance our level of faith to a new dimension. One of many examples Kim gave was about Moses having to strike a rock to produce water. He did that and water gushed forth. The next time God told Moses to speak to the rock. Instead of speaking Moses struck the rock - while that was something that Moses knew worked in the past, God was trying to take Moses to a new dimension of faith speaking to the rock. I came away from reading this book with great hope and inspiration. I highly recommend this book.

I never paid too much attention to this prophet until recently and after he died. I find this book most revealing about him as he explains his life at gut level and I understand more perfectly how God uses all the talents and abilities that are given to His own. A worthy read for sure.

My 17 month old has recently taken an interest in anything to do with animals, so when I saw this book, I decided to give it a try so I could read/show it to him. Overall, I am pleased with the book especially given that right now, it's free.Pros:- It has 50 pages of mammals and mammal facts. The facts are short, but it's intended for children, so that's ok.- The pictures of mammals are close up shots. Some of the books i've been reading to my son show the animal at a distance, or with other animals. This book, however, shows each animal solely so your child can easily distinguish which animal it is. There are land-based mammals and sea-based mammals in this book, so I have an array of different mammals to show/teach my son.- It's a super easy read. If your kids are like my son, they're constantly throwing a book in your lap to read. I can zip through this book in about 4-5 minutes flat, getting it out of my son's blood for about an hour.Cons: (none. for the price, you really can't gripe about this book)To my 17 month old son, this book is awesome as he can see many different animals/mammals in a different light from his other animal books. I would recommend this book to any parent looking to entertain their child with something other than a television.

“Big Mammals of the World” is a 52 page book that will capture the attention of your animal loving child. It is packed full of beautiful colorful photographs. The book also contains approximately 20 interesting animal facts scattered between the stunningly vibrant pages in the book.The book is short and concise so that it will hold short attention spans very well. I would also like to add that this is not an easy reader for children though because there are a few tough words so parents will most likely have to actually read this aloud for their younger children. Although this book is technically recommended for children of all ages, as a teacher and a mother, I would probably recommend that this book is most suitable for approximate ages 4-10. As a mom and a teacher, this would also be a great book to have on a device in your classroom for children to be able to enjoy in a reading center.Every evening my son and I curl up on the couch and enjoy a book together, and lately he has been insistent on me reading from my phone. Thank goodness for inexpensive e-books!I purchased this product at a free or discounted price in exchange for my honest, unbiased opinion. My reviews are based on real, personal trial of the product. I was very impressed with this book. I have a toddler and preschooler and like to find ebooks for them that have amazing pictures and a few interesting facts I can share. Often in this type of book I find that the text doesn't exactly match the picture. Usually the grammar is horrific and some sentences practically require translation. Not so with Big Mammals of the World. The pictures were amazing. The facts were relevant to the picture shown and I found it easy to discuss the picture in relation to them. They are also more in-depth than with most books, expanding my knowledge about some different mammals as well. I was also impressed with the variety of mammals included. In addition to elephants, rhinos, and gorillas, the book goes under the see to explain how whales are mammals as well. This is perhaps not a revelation to you or I, but having anything in common with a *whale* blew my 3.5 year old's mind. I highly recommend this book for both preschool children and younger gradeschoolers and plan to make sure I have it with me next time we go to the zoo so I can discuss more of the interesting facts with my children.I received this product free or at discount for my honest testing and review. I enjoy reading books like these to my child. This is a great learning tool offered as an ebook. The pictures are beautiful and fill the book with great facts to go along with each big mammals presented from around the world. Each page tells the information of a mammal in words a child can comprehend and enjoy.
